I "see" Jeff's initial, comically well-put point, but hype is and always has been part of the game, especially in all fields of collectibles. Just check out Barrett-Jackson's classic car auctions. Each of us just has to decide for ourselves just what is the sizzle and what is the steak in any given case, with no ill will intended towards Pete in this regard at all. Most of us here are pretty good at doing that. Plus we're big boys now, and we've had extensive discussions on eye appeal versus technical grade, and we pretty much agree on the importance of the former.

To be completely honest, i just recently found Net54 and began lurking here, right around the same time that Peter became a member and started posting (i believe that was back sometime around the winter of 2007 or so) and he got me coming back to Net54 every few hours, just to see what he was gonna post next, lol.:o

I just scored a Dick Williams card that has such sharp edges that you could slice a pepperoni log so thin that you could read the paper through it. Think my collection tops yours. WIN for Fripples.

I just had a very nice chat with Fripples. Fripples is a very educated adult that enjoys the hobby and especially the artwork on our gems. As a matter of fact, with a PHD in Middle Eastern studies (she'll kill me for letting that out), I told Fripples she might have some interests in common with Jim B. And of course Fripples has Lichtman to blame for enjoying the hobby. Isn't he always at fault :)? Fripples seems like a blast of person.....very upbeat!!

I thought that post above was a bit odd too....but it's all in fun.

I found Fripples posts to be a bit odd, both of them. Glad to see they were tongue in cheek. Tone is always tough to pick up on the board. I just thought that Fripples took some of that bad acid that's going around.

Errrm I suspect if you put Fripples and Jim B in the same room only one will get out alive -- and it wouldn't be Jim B.

The stuff that is learned on this forum is just amazing. I've lived my entire life up to now and had virtually no idea that the word "fripples" even existed. The fact that fripples is always plural, well.....that just boggles my mind.

Not to defend the people at Please Submit Again or Slippery Gasket Creators but I always wonder whether a card with a very faint image is as bad as it is when we see it because of the wear and tear of being exposed to light in dealer(s) inventory after being slabbed.

Almost surely no in the case of Old Judges. There is a decline curve for photo fading and most of it takes place fairly early in the photo's life (about 100 years ago). Unless the dealer's case is at an outside mall this is not an issue.

Probably not when they have had it less than 24 hours before putting it for sale... :)

But only after publicly announcing it as their favorite card in their collection, one which they will never sell. At least for an hour.
