These are truly incredible scans, thank you all for posting. The T-3 has long been my favorite set. Despite that, I have never owned one and doubt I ever will. But I love looking at them :) I did purchase a T-3 reprint set as a child from Renatta Galasso, the 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 ones. Great cards.

To the gentleman above with the Jordan, Lajoie, and Young cards, those are awesome. That Jordan is just incredible and the Lajoie and Young are true stunners and are great examples of buying the card, not the grade.

As a side note, what is the highest grade any T-3 has ever received, either from SGC or PSA?

I believe there is a PSA 8 of none other than Ty Cobb. Here is a nice PSA 1, almost embarrassed coming after the PSa 5 WOW

I have that reprint set as well.....

Before I discovered this site and started learning about pre-war cards, I thought those were the actual size of the original T3's!

Chris, I used to check the PSA pop report weekly when I was building my set 4-5 years ago.
And there was only 2 PSA-8's graded w/ nothing higher and ironically both were Ty Cobb's
Just checked the pops now and those 2 PSA-8 Cobb's are still the only 8's. There's also 29 PSA-7's with over 4660 that have been slabbed by PSA.

I did get to see one of those PSA-8 Cobb's at a Cleveland National on display at the PSA booth.
It was fantastic and looked flawless.

I never thought this thread would still be up and kicking. I have recieved quite a few pms/emails about T3s as well. I have to admit, there is a different feel to the collectors of these cards, a lot of mellow t3 collectors out there that seem to be in love with these cards and I understand why. I just wanted to thank everyone for their input and participation in the thread. I will start a Tiger team set, I count 8 now, after the CJ project is near completion.

I love the looks of these and would love to add a Pirate to my collection at some point. Right now, cost is the only issue.

Joe - Those are great! Someday a Tigers set will join the ranks with my CJs, goudeys and others. We have this nice antique corner piece (it fits in the corners and doors open to display items inside) with full illumination and glass/mirrors, the works left to us by my grandmother...a Tigers set would look awfully nice in there and I have 6-8 months or so to convince my wife they do as well. :p

I would like to thank all the people that put tack holes in the T3s to help them become more affordsable in the future for those of us who could care less about the technical grade and just like a nice image. :p

great thread!

Joe, fantastic Tigers display!!! i sent you an email.

I really want a T3 Chance that is SGC 10 with a pinhole. That card is awesome...

I have a T3 Chance, but it is devoid of it's original gray border. The gray border is what makes the card!

Great thread, and great scans...

OH, and for all you who may have seen and read about the "Sunburnt" Groom T206, take a look at that sunshine in the background of his T3 card....now we know why...

Most beautiful set IMHO. Will probably stick with the Mike Wheat repros based on price but the original scans you guys post are just incredible cards.

Hello,

Thought I'd chime in, but essentially just to agree with the points made in each of the previous comments on this thread.

I can remember 10 years or so ago, buying a stunning T3 common on Ebay with a BIN of $300. At the time, I couldn't believe I was paying so much for a T3 - easily the most I'd ever paid for a common - and hoping I wouldn't regret it. Sometime around 2005, when PSA started grading them, I sent the card in and it received a 6. I ended up trading that card for a pile of other T3's (actually wish I had it back, but it was an offer I couldn't refuse), that were probably worth about $3500. That was an insane deal, and I certainly couldn't get that much today, but the right buyer would still go $1500+ for that card.

I remember being angry and a bit confused as Dave Levin paid what seemed like way too much for some nice commons on Ebay one day. Only to discover that he was being shrewd and must have known that PSA was beginning to grade them and prices would most likely rise. Very, very shortly thereafter, the big slabs appeared. Well played, Dave.

So in short, the T3 market has absolutely come back down to earth, relative to the start of their debut with PSA. However, when compared to the late 90's and early 2000's, they're still way ahead. Further, most PSA-3 thru PSA-5 examples right now are a great deal - in my opinion. Over the years, I've loosely tracked the PSA pop report and it's easy to see that submissions have slowed to a crawl. Certainly expensive to submit, but not that many more out there to be submitted.

I hope you enjoy them. They are beautiful cards.

Happy Collecting,
Craig

Very nice, thorough analysis, Craig. Seems spot on, IMHO. I think that you'll see that they will be somewhat cyclical in nature re their prices, with that cycle trending upwards over a longer period of time, since for the most part, they are relatively available. In practical terms, their values will surge when they start to look like veritable bargains compared to other cards of the era. Their beauty is truly beyond dispute; because of that, they have tremendous power to reach out and grab you, transporting you right back to that era of play.

Best wishes,

Larry
