Eric, nice pickups. I really like '59 Topps.

Jason, I was about to say "nice Cecil Cooper rookie".... I'm such a Brewer homer.

"Cool that Carlton Fisk also appears on Coop's rookie". :p

If the Drapo had an 8 instead of a 6 and the Bell a 7 instead of a 5
it would be easily accepted,, i opened many 52 packs in the early 70s
and i know 1st hand they didn't come much better than those 2,
very nice pick ups.

Get yourself some of those Christmas Packs and do it all over again Jose :)

'71 Bazooka Dick Allen (Numbered)

Thanks to a heads up from CardinalCollector (thx, Randy) a ten year search has concluded. I overpaid but what the hey.

Dick Allen

That's great Jeff. He only played one year in St Louis and some were happy when they got him and some leery due to his history. Plus Curt Flood was part of the deal to get him and that raised controversy everywhere. But he had a very solid year for them in 1970, 30 +HRS and 100 + RBIs as I recall, and Jack Buck even agreed to call him Dick instead of Richie

Thanks Al. I remember it well. I remember really being bummed out that his 1970 Topps card was just a photo of him in a Phillies uniform turned sideways instead of a beautiful Cardinal uniform.

nolemmings 03-19-2013 05:17 PM

Attaboy Jeff--much nicer than his '70 Topps Cardinals. Was he ever really called just Rich Allen though?

BTW, can you tell me what is the approximate ratio of unnumbered to numbered '71 Bazooka cards? The latter don't seem to hit my radar hardly at all.

ALR-bishop 03-19-2013 05:20 PM

Allen

I edited above. When Flood refused to report ,the Phils got Montenez instead. Check out what he produced for them in 1971. He surpassed some of Allen's rookie stats

What do they do - use a dartboard, or just take a wild guess?

It would be so much cooler if it was Brian Dennehy.

Bill,

Thanks:)

My wife and I just began putting this set together. Great fun so far!

Best Regards,

Eric

Picked these up from a fellow board member earlier this week. Yankees, Dodgers, quite a few high numbers...a great lot of mid-grade cards that didn't break the bank:)

Nearing the halfway point on '55 Topps. This set has been an absolute pleasure to build so far...

Todd,

Sorry I just now noticed your question. Based on my observations they are certainly scarcer but not extremely rare. I see see cards like the Robinson, Aparicio, McCovey and Gibson in the numbered variation a lot. For the life of me I could never find a Dick Allen. Even at 12 Nationals when someone would have a small stack of "numbered," no Allen.

Grabbed these up at a local show. A pretty decently shaped Mantle (looks better than what the scan shows) and a very tough '61 high number.

Thanks guys, makes me feel better for paying 75% + of beckett $. I think the Richardson in particular was a card that I could've searched years to buy with that centering so I kinda justified the $

'52 Topps Yankees

Not sure why I'm doing this since I'll likely never own the Mantle, but I keep picking up nicely centered, mid-grade Yankees when I see them...here's the latest...

to go along with the others I have...

In my life as a baseball card dealer/collector coupled with the fact of being
a life long Yankee fan, i've gone through many Mickey Mantle cards over
the years, and that 53 Bowman has always been the one i like the most,
close second would be the 53 Bowman Berra Bauer Mantle.

nice pick-up for your first Mantle

KCRfan1 03-28-2013 09:26 PM

The 53 Bowman color is the nicest card set I have ever seen. Iwant, that Mantle is a classic card in every way.

Iwantmorecards77 03-28-2013 09:46 PM

Thanks, guys.

I over-paid just a little perhaps - but I thought it was for a reasonable price, strong centering, and from a reputable seller. I have no remorse!

I usually collect pre-war Hall of Famers and post-war rookies - but I always loved the '53 Bowmans and had to have this one - along with the Reese.

Nice pick-ups everyone!

chaddurbin 03-29-2013 11:02 AM

stumped on this one. card is clean, no crease or wrinkle...just oc. looks nrmt/mt, but grades a 2.5? maybe card is trimmed, only explanation but it got a number grade.

am i missing something obvious? help...

http://i370.photobucket.com/albums/o...ps493b75d6.jpghttp://i370.photobucket.com/albums/o...psd945905f.jpg

GasHouseGang 03-29-2013 11:12 AM

Well, come on Chad it has all that writing on the front.:p Actually, I don't see anything to explain the grade.

KCRfan1 03-29-2013 09:23 PM

Actually David, I don't believe you are too far off with " all that writing " on the front. If the card was trimmed, the card should not grade numerically and receive an authentic or something equivalent. I think the autograph gives the card the grade.
