It was knocked for being to garish or "busy", and also the fact that Mr. Cobb appeared to be lacking a neck.  For me, this all adds to the charm and appeal of the card.  Who made the rule that baseball cards had to be anatomically correct?
 
This card has it all --  the color scheme; the gold borders; an artistic, stylized portrait of Cobb wearing his crumpled Tigers cap with white prinstripes resting within a baseball diamond.  The crossed bats, mitt, and catcher's mask are framed perfectly below Ty's chin, while the Tigers logo and team name rest above him on the outfield grass.  A great piece of art, and a fantastic example of lithography from the early 1900s. |
