According to Ralph, he and Harry kept a scorecard during every game. They used the scorecard information throughout the game; also, Faucher did the post game show using the scorecard info.

Fantastic pickup, congrats!

1969 Bench Road Jersey

Was glad I struck out in Leland's as it turns out, it freed me up for this one. Although from a distance or with a poor cell phone, the embroidery looking like "1968", up close it is clearly 1969. In addition, the Wilson tagging for 1968 is much different than 1969. The 1968 Reds road jerseys (also Wilson products) feature red over white tackle twill for ALL numbering and lettering, front and back.

Scott,

Thanks. I think so as well. In response to a couple of emails, here are side by side shots showing the differences between the 1968 and 1969 Reds road uniforms.

Very nice Dave! Is the patch original to the jersey?

Clint,

The NOB has been restored and I just had the patch restored. I have a pretty good selection of the 1969 Anniversary patches, so I found one that looks great and shows commensurate use and wear to the jersey.

Dave,
Pretty tough to find a 69 jersey with original patch. Great classic jersey and thanks for sharing the pics.

Johnny Vander Meer 1st start ticket

2 Attachment(s)
I recently picked up a tough ticket to Johnny Vander Meer's 1st ML career start on May 19, 1937, which also happened to be the 1st night game for the Reds in 1937.
As many of you perhaps know, the Cincinnati Reds became the first ML team to play baseball under the lights in 1935.
Prior to this game, rookie Vander Meer only had been used as a pinch hitter and in relief since his ML debut in late April 1937.

21 year-old Vandy went the full 9 innings, but took the tough luck loss 3-1.
Vander Meer deserved better, pitching effectively and striking out a season high 11 Boston batters, not allowing an earned run in the game.
As an aside, Vandy also picked up his 1st career hit in his first AB in the majors.

I wish I had an actual photo from this game...

Jack Johnson and Jess Willard RPPCs

2 Attachment(s)
Picked up these early RPPCs of Jack Johnson and Jess Willard. They fought for the Heavyweight title in 1915 in Havana, Cuba, so I believe these were produced around that time by a studio in Panama. Both appear to be signed on the reverse by Jess Willard and there is an interesting reference to Kid Norfolk who was a famous Lt Heavyweight boxer of that era. Is the signature on the front of the Johnson RPPC a possible authentic Johnson autograph?

Great shirt Dave! I love it. And another nice example of showing color in a black and white world.

Scott - Congratulations on picking up the ticket to Vandy's first start. I appreciate how you share the history behind the item.

I know that Cooperstown has the jersey worn by Costner, but this is just such a classic visual from one my all time favorite movies. I have hundreds of jerseys in my collection, Hall of Famer flannels, gamers from childhood idols, but this one just brings me a special kind of joy.

If I had this when we were doing the book, I would have insisted on a feature essay for Crash Davis.

Those are great. Are any particularly rare? The Agee, maybe?

You should put them in the Anybody collect pins? thread....it could use a revival. :D

Went down south to the Rose Bowl Flea this past weekend...Barely even saw anything interesting...much less to buy...However I did run around to some antiques malls in L.A....Santa Monica, Pasadena, Hermosa Beach, Sherman Oaks...all nothing...But in a store in Pasadena a gal had a small collection of about ten European tins...and I spotted this c1900 12" tall mountaineering one...Mountaineering stuff is hard to find...but what a sport!!!...man against mountain....Now if I can just find some great tobogganing or dog sled race piece!

http://www.bamfords-auctions.co.uk/b...ectionery-tin/
I found another example on line, below...and as you can see originally it had a lid...The auction in which this better condition one sold...listed it as a Fryer's tin...I couldn't find any reference to Fryer's but did find a "Fryers" candy company in Nelson, Lancashire England that likely produced this tin....

<img src="http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc120/CarltonHendricks/Mountaineering%20Tin%202/Better%20Condition_zps0bvsdcej.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo Better Condition_zps0bvsdcej.jpg"/>

http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk...true_pioneers/
Fryer and Co (Nelson) Ltd, Victory V Factories, had its origins way back in 1830 when Nelson man Thomas Fryer met a travelling confectioner over a pint of beer and they decided to open a small shop in the town making peppermints and lozenges.

Eventually Fryer built a factory but when he ran out of cash 20 years later, Dr Edward Smith bought the business for £1,000 and ran it with his brother William Their formula for combining ether, liquorice and chloroform – it took five to seven days for the whole process – to produce Victory V Lozenges was still being used in 1959.

William took full control of the company in 1864 and it became a private company in 1906.

When he retired two years later, Jack became manager.

Down the years, the company had many notable firsts – it was the first to make jelly babies, slab toffee and decorated tins as sweet packaging.

c1915 BOBSLED/TOBOGGAN STATUE, 5 1/2" LONG, SPELTER CAST
No markings, likely Austrian

About a month ago I posted a mountaineering tin I got...and in jest I said "....Now if I can just find some great tobogganing or dog sled race piece!"...That was some coincidence...a few days later a bronze dealer emailed me an offer for the tobogganing statue above...Yesterday I drove into San Francisco to see it in person and you guessed it...it came home with me...Rare subject matter!

I think it was "stolen" or " he had to sell becAuse his job might be outsourced" or someone died or someone is pregnant which somehow gives him the ability to reneg on anything he sees fit. BUT if you see it on eBay, it will be one that was found on the curb or his job has been once again secured. Oh.. and he is sorry and it won't happen again.. Thing of the past.
Non of the said stories above are true of course..
It amazes me the lack of self awareness one can have. Scary that one can actually believe that they are invisible if they are wearing sunglasses.
There is only one Joey Farino.. One great big pimple on the hobby that keeps coming back after it pops over.. And over.. And over again.
