How would you guys rank the ’07 Cobb postcards in terms of desirability?

My thoughts… (excluding a number of team cards)
1. Seamless Steel Tubes
2. Wolverine News Portrait
3. Dietsche Cobb Fielding
4. Wolverine News Fielding
5. HM Taylor (Batting)
6. Dietsche Cobb Batting (‘07 version only)

I like this list, probably how I would rank them too. Wolverine batting is a bit rarer than the fielding Dietsche I believe. However, the fielding seems like a more liked image.

I’ve been shocked how much the Dietsche batting has shot up on some recent sales too! The Dietsche ones see more sales because of more supply, wonder where either of the Wolverines would be at now if at auction (Both Wolverines exceedingly tough)?

LOL, .. Ma'am, your child is ugly.

Bicem 04-02-2019 02:32 PM

Beauty in eye of the beholder, but curious what makes it ugly compared to the others?

as you say...beauty is in the eye...my eye doesn't like the seemless as much as it likes the others. Maybe it's all the words below Ty that aren't terribly pleasing to my eye? I find an image filling the whole card more appealing than all those "words!"

I agree. The Steel Tubes is Cobb’s second most important “rookie” card after the W600. Its a bad ass pose, and it’s rare as hell. Imagine if there were a 1916 Babe Ruth postcard with him in that pose. The team pc is going for a fortune as it is. An ultra-rare 1916 PC with only Ruth on it, especially in that pose, would go for an absolute fortune.

Agree Orlando, the Seamless image just screams Bad Ass to me! That man came to the park to play some ball that day!

Some sort of background might make it appear less stark and more appealing. But all that dirt on his pants? Wow factor.

Baseball Rarities 04-02-2019 03:04 PM

I basically agree with your list. I would just switch around the Wolverine Portrait and the Dietsche Fielding.

To me, the Seamless Steel Tubes is clearly the best of the group. I love the unique pose - Cobb standing there in full uniform holding his bat in one hand and his glove in the other. It is also, by far, the scarcest of them all.

I'm sure if I had a seamless Cobb...I'd like it more!!!!! a 1906 Ruth?????? He'd be like 11 years old????

Bicem 04-02-2019 03:38 PM

You'd have to like it a lot before owning one to shell out the $ needed to get one.

Pete's more a t207 Lowdermilk kind of guy.

Bicem 04-02-2019 03:43 PM

I'd take a w600 Cobb over all the postcards combined.

What's that laying on the ground by Cobb's feet? Is it is warmup sweater?

oldjudge 04-03-2019 10:16 AM

Fan he just beat up?

oldjudge 04-03-2019 10:30 AM

I'm embarrassed to say that I once had a nice copy of the Cobb fielding (and batting) postcards that I sold for under $2000 each. If the fielding one gets to $100k it will vault to near the top of my worst (unfortunately not the top).sales ever.

ok Jay...you opened the can...what was your worst????? Ruth rookie?

insidethewrapper 04-03-2019 10:49 AM

I think a card looks better when I own it.

I haven't had the fielding pose to regret selling yet, but I think I sold my batting pose for about $350 and one of the 1907 team postcards for $250.

Ruth rookieS, Boston Store and Collins McCarthy Ruth, Jackson M101-6. Fortunately, all long ago. The pain has almost worn off--almost. How about you Pete, what is your worst sale ever?

oldjudge 04-05-2019 10:52 AM

Pete-Make me feel better-what are your worst sales?

Leon 04-05-2019 10:58 AM

I sold Hal my '25 Gehrig Exhibit for 10k. I think it resides in a 6 holder now. It was a 5 when I had it though it was obtained raw from a Mastro Auction, for 2700'ish in '97-'98. I think it was described as NRMT-MT when I bought it so I was a little disappointed in the grade.
It was a record sale to Hal at the time though, so I Have that going for me !! :)

Not sure if i can!!!! Lowdy red cross was by far my worst...as far as selling too early...goidey ruths, m101-6 ruth...im just a minnow!!!

oldjudge 04-05-2019 01:06 PM

That makes me feel a little better. I was hoping you had sold a Baltimore News Ruth for $50 or traded a Wagner for a '68 Volvo.

jerrys 04-05-2019 02:25 PM

The worst trade:

1984 Parsippany National: My R316 Gehrig - Lou Gehrig autographed for a Chicago Baseball Currency Note. Even trade.

Today: Gehrig $15K-$20K BB Note $1K.

oldjudge 04-05-2019 03:23 PM

Gosh Jerry, for me that would be breaking even.

jerrys 04-06-2019 09:54 AM

Ha! That's a good one Jay.

Some may not know but it wasn't until the later part of the 1980s that the hobby interest started in earnest with autograph collecting. Autographs were free at the early Nationals. Lines were not that long, but Lou Avon was always on one. At some shows the charge for player's autographs were $2.00. Duke Snider signed for free and didn't have that much action. When Mantle was featured his rate zoomed up to $10. But his customers waiting line was short and often there was no line and he was left idle.

Exhibitman 04-07-2019 10:23 AM

Yeah, I remember when dealers used to call it 'defacing' the cards to get them signed.

oldjudge 04-10-2019 02:14 PM

The results in this auction will be another test of the current strength of the hobby. There have been unprecedented dollars spent in the February Heritage auction, REA, Memory Lane, and Weiss. There is another big Heritage auction ending shortly. A big last few days for LOTG should eliminate all questions about how strong the hobby is today.

I really don't know what the strength of the hobby is. Sure there are some amazing items shattering records. Like Cobb postcards. But what's going on with the nice, not museum worthy stuff? Not so clear to me. Take nice 48 Leafs as an example. Are prices flying upwards? How about nice Goudeys that aren't named Ruth and Gehrig and aren't PSA 8s. Are they appreciating decently? Not so clear to me. Maybe we are looking at a few of our neighbors driving Benz's and Teslas and hypothesizing that the car industry is kicking ass.

I agree with this list completely. But what about the Novelty Cutlery Cobb? Was that one issued later than these? I thought it was a 1907-1909 issue as well.

And while we're commenting on the aesthetics of these cards, am I the only one who finds the Dietsche Cobb Fielding to be incredibly goofy? And I have an SGC 3.5, but every time I look at it I wonder, "how did Ty feel about wearing a uniform that looks all white?"

Novelty Cutlery is a great-looking card but was issued several years after the others.

This is exactly correct. It is clear some names and issues are very strong but I am not sure I would therefore make a blanket statement that the hobby is strong. I really don't feel it is because there are far more cards or issues that seem very flat with prices largely unchanged. A strong market is when all or most things across the board are up and I am just not seeing that right now.

Doesn't PWCC have some tool or program that supposedly tracks a broad cross-section of cards?
