Joe DiMaggio’s record of hitting in 56 straight games does not include the single he hit in the All-Star game mid-streak. He gets my nod for 57 over Bobby Thigpen, who was the first closer in the AL to reach 57 saves in 1990, no longer a record though.

Charles Henry "Red" Barrett (February 14, 1915 – July 28, 1990) was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played 11 total career seasons in the National League. He played for the Cincinnati Reds, Boston Braves and St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched the shortest complete game by fewest pitches (58) in history. Finished with a won loss record of 69-69.

First of all.....did you know that the Philadelphia Phillies are the longest continuous franchise in Baseball history. The Phillies originated in 1893 (initially called the Quakers).

During these 130 years, the Phillies played in only four World Series. They lost their first two W.S. to the Red Sox (1915), and the Yankees (1950).

In 1980, the Phillies finally won the W.S. by beating the Kansas City Royals. In 2008 they won the W.S. by beating the Tampa Bay Rays.

My mathematical mind tells me that the magic # to their success is the number "8". At this rate their next W.S. victory will be in 2028 :)

LOL someone should see how many answers there have been that don't follow the rules. Including this one!!!

The Chicago Cubs of 1998 played 82 home games instead of the usual 81. Were they the first to do so? Look it up and find out. If some team played 83 you have a tailor made post to follow this one.:D

BobbyStrawberry 07-04-2022 09:23 AM

In 1905, Harry Davis led the AL with 83 RBIs. Excepting the strike-shortened 1981 and COVID-shortened 2020 seasons, no player has the led the American League with fewer since then.

egri 07-04-2022 01:13 PM

Ted Williams reached base in 84 consecutive games.

Ted—Not sure what you are talking about. The Chicago NL team has been a member of the NL continuously since 1876, the year the league started. They are the longest continuous NL franchise at the same location. The Braves have also been a member of the NL since its’ beginning but they have switched locations several times.

frankbmd 07-04-2022 03:34 PM

In 1968 Wilbur Wood became the first 26 year old to pitch in 86 games in one season.

Hint: The same could be said for 87 and 88 games in a season at the age of 26, but we haven't gotten there yet.;)

Based on the following two posts, I declare Wilbur Wood as the record breaker for 87 and 88 as well.

89 is next.

The Phillies are, however, the oldest team to have kept the same NAME, so that may be Ted's point.

A few other corrections - they started in 1883 not 1893, and they have played in 7 World Series not 4. 1983, 1993 and 2009 were not listed.

Jay

We have gone thru this before; however, I will repeat. The Philadelphia team's NAME.....PHILLIES....is the longest continuous team name in Major League Baseball.

As you very well know, it replaced the name "Quakers" early in the 1880's.

Thank you Peter....that was exactly my point. And, this fact was noted a few years ago in one of my Net54 TRIVIA quizzes.
However, for whatever reason, Jay forgot my answer to that quiz..... 1883 Philadelphia PHILLIES.

This is post #93 of this thread. Pretty cool concept.

Most hits in a season by an AL rookie pitcher (minimum 10 games pitched): 93 by Shohei Ohtani, 2018.

Ohtani surpassed the longstanding record of George Sisler, who had 78 hits in 1915 for the Browns and also had a 4-4 record in 15 games pitched.

frankbmd 07-05-2022 05:44 PM

In 1969 Henry Aaron set the all-time record for Sacrifice Flies with 94.

Of course he started breaking his own record before retiring.

bn2cardz 07-05-2022 05:58 PM

Hoby Milner’s 95 appearances without a decision to start a career are the most all time.

BobbyStrawberry 07-05-2022 06:53 PM

Mariano Rivera's 96 postseason appearances lead all pitchers all time.

tedzan 07-05-2022 07:11 PM

After Don Larsen's perfect World Series game (Oct 8, 1956), the NY Sports media surrounded Don with their numerous questions.
Don answered one who asked him how difficult was it pitching this game.

Don modestly replied......"The Dodgers made it easy for me, I only threw 97 pitches".

98 by John Gochnaur in 1903. John was the shortstop for the Cleveland Naps and also hit .185 that year.

Highest percentage of pitching decisions lost, career:

Of the many who have accomplished this, Terry Felton was perhaps most impressive. He bolstered his stats with a standout 0-13 campaign in 1982, capping off a spectacular four-year career in which he went 0-16 in 55 games.
