They came with square corners.

Does anyone know if these cards were issued with the corners already rounded, or were they perfectly square when new?

If they started out already a bit rounded, then the SGC grade is not too crazy, since the central image is pretty clean and crease free, despite the chipping and creasing in the edge areas.

Ah, OK, thanks, Kevin and Peter. I also just found this older article and now see the Ruth does have a fairly heavy crease in the corner that does hit the central image. I'll admit now the grade is a bit generous. Hope it still breaks records.

Who makes up the pool of bidders for a card like this? Is there a cast of usual suspects for these big-time cards?

Zuck, Musk, Buff(et), and the Sultan of Brunei

Funny that the Monet is described as "unseen".

Leon - it seems to me like you need to start another "guess the hammer price" contest for the Ruth!

I agree.

Nope

I don't agree, just based on my "days of yore" grading. In the way back when days, a card with multiple creases that broke the paper, would be a GD card. TPGs have made it even harsher than that, so I don't see how this could have ever received a 3 grade. As a raw kind of guy, it would be a raw 2 in my book. And I would expect at least one number less from a TPG.

I see this card as a 1.5, at best, by today's standards.

What damage do those have the SGC graded them so low?

Almost all of them have scrap/glue on the back

The Felix Potin albums were massive with over 500 cards per release across 3 releases

learning alot on this thread from
1. then vs now grading
2. Art World and Their auctions
3. Square vs Round Corners
4. High Estimators vs low estimators

Love it all keep it coming

Since we love to diversify our threads always wondered who would have won in a real world fight Sponge Bob or Pappa Smurf?:D:D:D

Just like cards, art can be heavily restored and it is generally accepted. The Salvator Mundi documentary is a must watch for anyone that’s a fan of Leonardo. It has some controversy behind it though!
