Movies

Some of these movies have been mentioned in this thread (several times), so pardon me for reprising them. The one difference between me and most of you
is that I'm old enough to have seen these movies in the theatre when they were originally shown. And of course, I've seen them on the TV many times since.

Anyhow, here are my recommendations......

Casablanca
The Robe
On The Waterfront
Vertigo
North by Northwest
Guns of Navarone
The Great Escape
Dr. Strangelove....especially this one, since I was in the Air Force on a B52 Bomber base when it was in the theatre in 1964
The Sting
Jaws
The Verdict
Absence of Malice

WESTERNS

Ox Bow Incident
High Noon
Shane
Johnny Guitar
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

BASEBALL

Pride of the Yankees
The Natural
The Stratton Story....Monte Stratton pitched for the Chicago White Sox (1934-1938). Jimmy Stewart portrays him in this Academy Award movie (Best original story).

An underrated Chevy Chase film is Funny Farm. I lol'd.

But if you don't like him this won't change your mind :)

If you're in a San Fran state of mind, definitely check out 'The Game' with Michael Douglas. Great flick. Then watch 'Zodiac,' directed by David Fincher. It is really well done, but there are some chilling parts that are horrifyingly realistic. I wish it wasn't a true story.

Ted buddy, I'm right there with you on many of these. Just off the top of my head:

All Through the Night

The Big Sleep

To Have and Have Not

Dr. No

From Russia With Love

Thunderball

You Only Live Twice

Barabbas

Lust for Life

The Train

The Man Who Knew Too Much (1955 version with James Stewart and Doris Day)

Rear Window

To Catch a Thief

It's A Wonderful Life

You Can't Take It With You

Saboteur

Foreign Correspondent

Disney's In Search of the Castaways, Swiss Family Robinson, Shipwrecked, Candleshoe, Monkees Go Home!, Third Man on the Mountain, The Parent Tray (the original from 1961), No Deposit No Return, That Darned Cat, The Moon-spinners, Boatniks, Mary Poppins, and The Love Bug

Charlie Chan films, with either Warner Oland or Sydney Toler as Mr. Chan

SOME SUPERB RECENT BRITISH-PRODUCED DETECTIVE CRIME-SOLVING:

Any of the Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes

David Suchet as POIROT

Foyle's War

Again, just off the top of my head!;) --- Brian Powell

PS-- If you want a baseball movie, that perhaps will make ya feel as a kid again, I've become very fond of Safe at Home!, with great co-stars Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle.

Movies

Hey Brian1961

Regarding oldies-but-goodies, we both forgot to include The Maltese Falcon.

And, I'll add a relatively recent movie....The Cinderella Man
A terrible title for a great movie featuring the true life story of boxer James Braddock (portrayed by Russell Crowe).

Ted, you're right. I indeed forgot about Casablanca, a genuine favorite.

Octavio, yes bro, Clint and his sensitive mule. I love that scene in "A Fistful of Dollars".

Merry Christmas, guys. --- Brian Powell

Anyone see Birdbox yet on Netflix?

Ive gotten mixed reviews about it. People either love it or hate it. I hope to watch it this weekend.

I agree with Darren regarding The Game with Michael Douglas being a great film. It's one of those films that is awesome the first time you see it if you don't know what's coming in the end.

And someone else mentioned The Gods Must Be Crazy. An odd film but also very good regardless.

If you like classic 1930's, I recommend "Dead End" and "Crime School" with Humphrey Bogart and the Dead End Kids, these 2 came out just before "Angels with Dirty Faces" so if you like that, you'll like the other 2.

I’ll throw out two:

Twelve O’clock High, with Gregory Peck.

American Sniper. A prior SEAL chief I went through OCS with had been a sniper and knew Chris Kyle; he really liked the movie.

Twelve O’clock High with Gregory Peck, Gary Merrill, and Dean Jagger (Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor).

Thanks for mentioning this movie. It brings back fond memories, I saw it when I was 10 years old when it was in the theatres. I thought when I grow up I will join the Army-Air Corps.
And sure enough, I served in the Air Force 1960-1964.

And, thank you Scott for your service.

Watched it tonight, can't say that I'd recommend. Left me wanting more - maybe that is the Netflix plan.

I watched it on new years. It was just ok, but I had the same feeling, wanting more.

Nice to see the doctor from ER was able to find work in the medical field after the apocalypse

Bird Box

My wife and I watched it last night. We liked it. There are a lot of unanswered questions, so I'm guessing their will be a sequel or a series coming up.

BTW, I went running through the woods this morning while blindfolded. It didn't go well.
