Recent raw pickups:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...0lee%20Yaz.jpg 1979-83 Coral Lee postcards. PSA grades the set, and has graded another Yaz from the set (#15C), but has never graded this single. I bought a lot of 15 of them and these were the nicest 2, already mailed to PSA. If the photo looks familiar, you might have seen this photo I have, signed by President Carter: http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...er%20photo.jpg I'd like to have Yaz sign it too, but that's an expensive proposition. Then I got some graded Yaz cards in the mail yesterday: http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...mini%20205.jpg Never liked this card much, but this is a really nice copy, without PD's and registration issues I almost always see on this card. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...tess%20Yaz.jpg I love really well done hand-cut cards, happy with this one |
I know I do most of the posting in this thread, but I really hope others will post cool Yaz items as well. Here are my latest pre-1980 Yaz additions:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...AS%20front.jpg http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...0AS%20back.jpg This checks boxes both for my Yaz collection and my 68 Venz set. This is my 5th Venz Yaz card, but my first one that's a "solo" card, without other players on it. Pretty rough, but happy to have it. Only 5 graded higher. Some paper loss on back, but not enough to obscure his face. I'm chipping away at a couple of the subsets within my 68 Venz registry. There are 7 Yaz cards in the set and I now have 3/7. And there are 10 All Star cards and I now have 3/10. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...az%20front.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...Yaz%20back.jpg 1976 MSA Red Barn disc. Everything I've read about the MSA discs (mostly in this forum) says the Red Barn one is the scarcest. PSA has only graded 7 copies of this disc. There are 2 variations: one with the Kenosha address on the back and one with no address on back. This one obviously has the Kenosha address. |

Nice pickup. I really like the 1970 and 1971 Topps Supers. Great pics that usually have cool background shots. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
I detest the Red Sox and especially the 1970s players who fought it out with my Yankees, but the 1973 Topps Yaz is part of one of my favorite Simpsons memes "when he had the big sideburns":

Finally got around to scanning my cards from a recent Yaz private signing
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...0RC%20auto.jpg For sentimental reasons, this card becomes the #1 card in my collection, and the last one I would ever part with. Christmas 2011 we didn't have any money, but my then-wife and kids, knowing I'd always dreamed of owning a Yaz RC, bought this card for me. Tons of sentimental value. Later it landed in a PSA 2 holder and there I thought it would stay, but I cracked it out to get it signed. Very, very happy with this one! http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...%20Yaz%202.jpg And this one is not only for my Yaz collection, but for my 74 Topps Sox team set too. It was a PSA 8 crackout. The Yaz makes 8 autos in my team set and I'm waiting to get back a Cepeda from a private signing that will make it 9. I got one Yaz card signed for each of my sons as well and they selected which ones from their personal collections. One went with a Diamond King and the other with a 66 Topps. Both look great. |
Yaz signed cards
Dan,
Those are awesome! |
Yaz very well could be the best son of a Long Island potato farmer in the Hall of Fame. :)
|
Dan, Congrats on the signed Yaz. rookie. That is an incredibly cool back story.

EDIT: Also didn't PSA screw up? That is a 1970 Scratch Off Yaz card. |
No that's a 71 scratch off. That's why I showed the back. They issued them in 70 and 71. 70 has a white border on back, 71 has a red border on back. The 71's are much harder to find, hence I'm happy with a PSA 3.

Never knew about the color differences on the back of the Scratch Offs. I checked my Yaz and his is white, but I found these 8 red backs, including 4 HOF'ers…

Awesome rare Yaz items!
|
Here are 2 Yaz items that arrived yesterday:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...rs%20front.jpg This nice OPC was bought from Tom Salems, OPCBaseball.com http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...0A%20front.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...20A%20back.jpg There are 2 variations of this checklist. I already had both in PSA slabs, but this one is a huge upgrade, from a 5 to a PSA 8.5 ! 1967 was the best year of Yaz's career, so he's featured prominently in the 1968 sets. Just counting the base sets of Topps products (Topps, OPC, Venz) he has 20 cards. This doesn't include inserts or test issues. I recently decided to make those twenty 1968 cards a sub-project for me. Here is where I currently stand, in term of PSA hollered copies: OPC = 1/5 Topps = 5.5/8 (still want to upgrade the other CL version) Venz = 3/7 Total = 9.5/20 |

Hey Dan,
Not sure if you are aware, but there are actually at least 4 different versions of the 1968 Yaz checklist. The two cards on the left have the same backs (with the inclusion of the word "GAME"). But the round pictures are cropped differently. The top card shows a good amount of the 'B' on his hat cropped off and a sliver of his bat (at lower right) is visible. The bottom card has a much more fuller 'B' and the bat is unseen. The two cards on the right have the same backs (no word "GAME"). And again the round pictures are cropped differently. The top card shows a good amount of the 'B' on his hat cropped off and a sliver of his bat (at lower right) is visible. The bottom card has a much more fuller 'B' and the bat is unseen. Attachment 256600 |
Sorry Darren, Al and I have discussed this too, but I don't buy it. I've seen various degrees of the B showing or not showing. There aren't 4 distinct versions, but numerous ones, each with subtle differences. I don't consider those variations, and I don't plan to seek them all out. I am convinced there are 2 versions of the checklist, as are Beckett, SGC and PSA.

You're certainly free to feel however you want, and sure, there are tiny differences between the cropping of the photos with regard to how much of the 'B' appears. I definitely agree with that. But they all undeniably fall into one of two distinct categories: the 'B' is either severely cropped off (and the bat appears in the lower right) or it isn't severely cropped off and it appears to be a full 'B' (and the bat is non-existent, or in some cases, just a microscopic sliver appears). There is also the telltale feature of a larger light colored area to the left of his hat in the full 'B' version. Taken together with the differing back verbiage, I have no problem cataloguing 4 different versions of this card on my variations list.

Today was a monster mail day for me. I was approached last week by a guy who wanted to trade for some of my Yaz items. I've never traded items out of my master registry, but he has deep pockets and was able to blow me away. I traded away 3 items and got 7. Every item I got was one I either never thought I would find or was in a grade I couldn't have otherwise afforded. And to top things off, I've already purchased raw replacements of 2 of the items I traded away. Without further ado, here are the new additions, in chronological order:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...ooka%20Yaz.jpg Check out the cutting job on this one. Beautiful! http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...20Up%20Yaz.jpg Very happy to finally own a nice copy of this. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...az%20front.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...Yaz%20back.jpg This transfer is pop 6, with only 3 higher. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...og%20Yaz_1.jpg The Transogram might be my favorite from this haul. They are so tough to find and always pricey. The cutting of this one makes it an automatic "authentic," but I've seen a lot worse. This card looks great to me. Pop 4, only 3 higher. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...20Yaz%2010.jpg Value-wise, this 76 is the crown jewel among today's arrivals. A big upgrade over my PSA 8. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...anel%20Yaz.jpg This is my first Hostess panel and it has tremendous star power. The wavy cut hurts the eye appeal here and I'm debating whether I have the balls to crack it out, try to trim it, and resub. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...GOLD%20Yaz.jpg I've had other Yaz collectors tell me it's surprisingly difficult to find this gold variation of the 82 Perma Graphics. The scratch is on the slab, not the card. Pop 5. Thanks for looking, everybody. If you couldn't tell, I'm over the moon with these new additions!! |
Thanks for showing the Yaz collection.
You have some real cool stuff. |

A few recent Yaz pickups (and a few more on the way).
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...uper%20Yaz.jpg http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...az%20front.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...Yaz%20back.jpg The disc is a 1978 Saga Disc. I also bought some Red Sox pocket schedules with Yaz on them. Two 1979 WITS radio and one 1980 TV 38. I already had one copy of each, but these were different back variations: http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...ds%20front.jpg http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...eds%20back.jpg My favorite one is Terrible Ted. Dude was such a fanatical collector of pocket schedules that he took out an ad on a pocket schedule, presumably looking for more pocket schedules. |
I came across this Yaz item the other day and really liked the image. It didn't have any bids so I decided to take it for the minimum. The AH description alleged it as a rare issue, but this outfit throws that term around pretty liberally. I didn't see it among the items posted in this thread though so is it somewhat uncommon?
http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/...stiknv3ri.jpeg |
All the 60s and 70s Red Sox team issues are pretty scarce. I've never seen that one before.
Beckett lists a black & white set from 1971, not a color one. Unfortunatrly, it looks like PSA labeled them the same and lumped them together in the pop report. Here is my b&w from the same year: http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...0Yaz%20PSA.jpg |
Thanks for the info Dan.
Glad I could contribute something you haven't seen before to the thread. Certainly unfortunate that PSA didn't differentiate between the two issues. |
To give you an idea of scarcity, PSA says they've only graded 13 "1971 team issue" yaz cards, which include all b&w like mine and color like yours. I've seen at least 4 of them and they were all like mine. Very few of the 13 are you card. In fact yours might be the only one. So yes, it's scarce. Would you mind PMing me what you paid for it at auction? That would help me in the future.
Edit: after more research, I believe your card is mislabeled. With that being said, the Beckett Almanac was no help in determining what it is, nor was the PSA Yaz registry. I have emailed PSA, because I'm curious of what your card actually is. I'll let you know what they say. |
Sent you a pm with the link. Appreciate your research and knowledge.
|
You're welcome.
A guy I know is breaking his Yaz set. I was able to pick up 5 of his cards and these were the first 2 to arrive: http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...rs%20panel.jpg http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...es%20front.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...les%20back.jpg The Atlantic Oil card is my favorite of the 2. Extremely condition sensitive, from a contest. |
OK, if low grade rarities don't strike your fancy, how about some high grade goodness?
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...SA%20front.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...PSA%20back.jpg For those who might not know, the Red Barn disc is arguably the most difficult MSA disc; it's definitely in the discussion at least. Mine is only the 8th copy of Yaz graded by PSA. Note the Kenosha address on back. There's an even scarcer variation with no address. |
Dan,
Here is my high grade addition to this thread. I believe you have seen this one but other guys here probably haven't. James http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b1...psxar5vh08.jpg http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b1...psx7xyj9kf.jpg |

Yaz Photo
1 Attachment(s)
I have lots of Carl Yastrzemski cards, but my favorite item is this small, blurry photo I took of my TV in 1983. It was "Yaz Day" (10/1/83), and at 8 years old, I was devastated that he was retiring! So I took this photo, and I have kept it for the last 33 years. Thought it might be cool to try and have him sign it sometime...
**Edited 3/6/17 - I originally posted that this was his last game. After "Yaz Day", he actually played one last game on 10/2/83. Andrew |

Great cards and premiums posted so far! Here are a few Yaz items that I do not think have been posted yet (along with others that might have been as I did not check the thread as thoroughly as I probably should have).

|
Thanks Alan, those are awesome! I only have 3 of them. I have an Atlantic Oil Tony C, but not the Yaz. Can you identify the first one? I've seen them on eBay but none of the books have helped me figure out who issued the postcards and when.
|
The first one is actually blank backed and I have never been able to figure out its origins. I believe I posted about it on here years ago and I also have a brief memory of corresponding with either Dave Hornish or Bob Lemke regarding another example (if so it would be on their respective blogs). Regarding any you do not own, please email me at aelefson@hotmail.com and we can discuss things.
