reviving an old post
while searching through things, as Im new to the website, I thought I would post in this old thread as it is my main area of collecting. Over the years I have bought and sold many items, some I wish I had never sold (a Morris Rath signed GPC for starters). These are some autographs I currently have, including two 1917 Sox.

Very nice items Thomas, please feel free to "post away" as there are many Black Sox fans on the site that enjoy seeing pieces related to the team.

Harvey McClellan 5x7 1925 Photo
Picked up a nice 1925 original wire photo 5x7 of Harvey McClellan that ran for his obit. Discoloration on the front due to glue used on the back to glue piece of paper with information relating to the article.
Now if I could only find an autograph of his to go with it (I have only seen one offered on the market before) http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p...pslkirtsmv.jpg http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p...psjnypmorl.jpg |
Babe and the Black Sox
Great picture of Harvey, Thomas, and as you said tough auto. Thought fellow Black Sox collectors might like to check out these recently purchased EBAY items. Really like the Ruth/B Sox connection with these pics of the band performance being within a week of Landis ending ending the famed B Sox playing careers.

I just did an illustration and story of McClellan for a book I'm writing about Kentucky baseball. Though in many places he's called "Harvey," his real first name was "Hervey." He was from Cynthiana, about halfway between Cincinnati and Lexington and did his WWI Army service at Fort Thomas right down the street from me. Poor guy had his career and life cut short by stomach cancer.

Here is a McClellan signature from a multi-signed album page.
|
I can never remember which one was correct Hervey or Harvey thx for the reminder!
Thanks for the pic of the auto Steve. Keating had a multi signed album page with McClellan years ago that at the time I wish I had the extra cash to splurge on it (I think his was on a blue album page...cant remember) |

The Swede, in a contact print by Charles Conlon. I think this portrait isn’t as strong as it could be, and not nearly as strong as a portrait he took of Gandil, probably on the same day. If you have the Gandil print (or Cicotte), please contact me!

Van Buskirk Swede Risberg Signature
I have had a Swede Risberg signature in the past on a 3x5, but I have had my heart set on one of the fabled Van Buskirk 3x5 signatures. Final was able to purchase one this past week (JSA cert too).
A few of the Buskirk's have little imperfections as Risberg was in the hospital and signed, rumor has it, 100 index cards overnight. This one has one with the "i" in Risberg. If anyone has an extra Felsch signature laying around or that Bill James signed contract from REA a few years back...hit me up! |
being 100th anniversary I would think there was a lot of stuff out there available.
curious are there any cards of Grover Lowdermilk? If so if someone has one I'd love to see a picture/scan of it |

I always thought Bill James and Byrd Lynn probably knew about the fix before the series started...James based on his involvement in the 1917 "fix" stuff and Lynn bc he was TIGHT with Jackson (WS roomate) and Lefty Williams...also both James and Lynn were West Coast PCL players...as were a vast majority of banned players (Gandil, Gedeon, Risberg, Williams, Chase, McMullin, Weaver)

1919 Black Sox

Continuing this thread. I noticed the current Written Word auction has a Buck Weaver signature (signature attached). It does not look quite right to me, but am wondering if there are any other opinions.
|
Quote:
checked it out a few months back and compared to his other sigs and this one just does not look like his others. Also, a pretty common name, so worried its just another George Weaver. Last, I think that Written Word has a few bad reviews if you do a search. So just too many red flags. |
It could be an early sig. Threre are a couple of tells that occur in later sigs too but also some that are very different. With that said, I avoid anything these days if my conclusion is it "could be". I know it's a hard one to find, but tread carefully. Good luck.

Joe Jenkins Info Card
1 Attachment(s)
Bought a lot of 1919 Sox Heilbroner Info Cards which included a signed Dick Kerr but really was after this one. I feel ths "This is correct" is in Jenkins hand, but the pencil "Joseph" probably isnt. Anyone out there have a Joe jenkins autograph? This is the closest I have come

The Reds is the cover of the Roto section in the Chicago Sunday Tribune on Sept 21, 1919.
The Sox is a blank backed supplement to the same paper dated a week earlier (Sept 14, 1919). Both are about 12 X 17.5 inches. |

Got excited when I saw this. It doesn't really fit in my collection so I may end up moving it when something comes along that is more of a fit, but I think it is super cool.
One of the most fascinating people around. Some of the details on the back. |

1919 Team Picture
1 Attachment(s)
Picked up this circa 1940s-50s print of what is labeled the 1920 White Sox, but is the 1919 Sox. The presence of what appears to be Dave Danforth (3rd from left) and Frank Shellenback (6th from left) would date this picture to the 1919 season. While not labeled here is my identification:
L-R Kid Gleason, Lefty Williams, Dave Danforth, Eddie Collins, Joe Jenkins, Frank Shellenback, Dickie Kerr, Grover Lowdermilk, Ray Schalk, Eddie Cicotte, Reb Russell, Happy Felsch, Shano Collins, ?Chick Gandil?, Eddie Murphy, Fred McMullin, Swede Risberg, Joe Jackson, Hervey McClellan, Nemo Leibold, Buck Weaver, Byrd Lynn |

Pro model bat
1 Attachment(s)
Aside from a few Joe Jackson, Eddie Collins, and Ray Schalk bats, there are not all that many Black Sox bats in the hobby. So, I offer this Reb Russell bat as a Black Sox piece. Reb's model seems to have been popular with other players: I believe that even after he retired other players would order his model, with his signature, for their own use. But this one is said to match his orders from H&B. True, Reb didn't contribute much to the Sox in 1919. He pitched to a couple of batters with poor results. But he did play for them in 1919!

1917 Collins-McCarthy's
1 Attachment(s)
I was too slow to land the Felsch and not interested in the "Lefty Williams" with the wrong picture (Hugh High). Great looking cards with the Collins-McCarthy Baseball's Hall of Fame backs. Was told they were cut from a sheet which is why the A grades (my picture does not do them justice)

Risberg Checklist Completed
1 Attachment(s)
Would like to see some folks' recent pickups...
I'm going to make a couple of posts in here this week after a few big pickups for me thanks to a net54 member Picked up my last Risberg card, 1916 Zeenut, to complete his 3 card checklist (I dont count the 1917-18 Team set as only one set is known to exist) It's not perfect obviously, a scrapbook removal with some staining and writing with trimmed down edges, but the image is great! ...Now ISO 1915 Zeenuts of Williams and Burns, and a nice low-mid level 1915 Cicotte Cracker Jack...and a W514 Jackson of course... |
Nice pickup Thomas, and good luck finding a nice 1915 Cicotte CJ. I got mine about 30 years ago but misplaced it for many years when we moved. Fortunately found it 3 years ago in an old briefcase along with some forgotten autographs.

Plus the last 2 months picked up signed photos of the White Sox clubhouse attendants the Colledge brothers and a signed AP of mascot/batboy Eddie Bennett. |
1919 White Sox Front Office

Picked up 2 signed documents to round out signatures of the 1919 White Sox front office staff.
Owner - Charles Comiskey 1910 signed letter Business Manager - Norris O'Neill 1912 Western League signed pass to go along with my... Team Secretary - Harry Grabiner 1935 signed letter Treasurer/Traveling Secretary - John Louis Comiskey signed letter cut |
Do those bats ever come up for auction?
|
Thomas, you've had one heck of a good year so far on the Black Sox collection. Can't wait to see what's next.
|
Thomas - I am sort of a Joe Jenkins fan. Very long story. Does his memorabilia come up at all? I wouldn’t even know where to look.
Great stuff, by the way! |
Quote:
I get the impression he would have been a fun guy to hang around, I read an interview he gave later in life where he basically said he was very happy being the 3rd string catcher. He also wrote letters to Comiskey from over seas while he served in WW1 that were printed in the papers that are a fun read. |
August 1910 Receipt
One of my favorite collecting niches, 1919 Black Sox. There`s always great items being added to this thread, the latest continuing that trend. Always on the lookout for "affordable" B Sox related pieces and this one fit the bill. Not sure if it was here or read somewhere else but, supposedly soon after Chick Gandil was acquired by the White Sox he had these clothing items charged to Charles Comisky. Of course Comisky had never heard of the arrangement and kept this in his scrapbook to apparently recoup payment from Chick. Now that must have been an interesting conversation.

That's a very cool piece!
Was part of Comiskey's scrapbook and there was a letter accompanying the bill that sold at auction not to long ago. I dont own it but did grab pictures of it. |

Mid to late 80s, my friend Billy and I were trying to round out the 1919 White Sox on Micro League Baseball. We had to field 25 players and spent an afternoon pouring over the baseball encyclopedia for any player that had at bats for the team. We stumbled upon Joe Jenkins. I believe his birthday was in October and my buddy, Billy, was born in October. He passed away in late June. School let out in late June. Joe Jenkins became a hero for us. To see if someone was telling the truth, we’d say: “Swear on Joe Jenkins!” and the other, if they were being completely honest, would reply “I swear on Joe Jenkins”. There was a penalty if that oath was ever broken. I still see Billy from time to time and Joe’s name still gets bandied about. The little I’ve read on him does indeed make him seem like an interesting character. I got to check out those baseball cards... |
Joe Jenkins - card arrived
Thomas - I can’t thank you enough for sending Mr Jenkins my way. You are a true mensch ! Thank you...thank you 1000x
