Pete Rose's 4,190th hit was a first inning single at Wrigley Field off Reggie Patterson, on Sep 8, 1985.

He got his 4,191st hit off Patterson in the fifth inning of the same game.

Carl Yastrzemski - 3000th hit off of Jim Beattie September 12, 1979 at Fenway Park

Manny Ramirez - 500th home run May 31, 2008 Camden Yards. This was a fluke for me. I had no idea. The D.C. alumni chapter of my wifes law school does a baseball outing to Baltimore when the Red Sox are in town for their weekend series. I will actually have two stubs from the game at my booth during the National

Monica Abbott - pitches a perfect game for the Chicago Bandits against the Akron Racers August 5, 2011 at Rosemont Stadium. This happened during the National in Chicago that year. The stadium was a ten minute walk across the street from the convention center.

August 10, 1989: San Francisco Giants vs. Cincinnati Reds

DAVE DRAVECKY's comeback game.

He lost half of his deltoid muscle when they removed a cancerous tumor... The doctors told him he would never pitch again. About a year later he warmed up in the bullpen and received one of 10 standing ovations that day.

He pitched seven innings and gave up only one hit before finally getting touched up for 3 runs in the 8th. The Giants nailed down the victory, 4-3. Unbelievable game.

He would go on a bit later to pitch in Montreal where he would pitch outstanding ball for another five or so innings before his arm snapped. I remember that one, too... watching on tv and seeing his arm wrap around his body as he released the pitch... he looked like he got shot.

He would go on to lose that arm... but his strength and determination will always stay in my memory. I was in the bleachers that day, screaming my lungs out for him. AMAZING day.

My dad and I had to drive back to Bowling Green, KY that night empty handed and disappointed( 3 1/2 hours ). My Dad had just enough nerve to ask off for the next day, Sept 11. We went back that night and got to see hit 4192. We were also interviewed moments after the hit by a local radio person for our thought and reaction. It was so cool at the time how he hugged his son on 1 base and how they pulled a red corvette onto the field to present to Pete for this great accomplishment.
My birthday is Sept. 12, but I received my present on Sept 11 that year by being able to witness history with my Dad.

Touching father/son story.......a memory made more special by being together, father and son. Thanks for sharing.

Braves vs. Pirates 1992 NLCS game 5. Braves down 2-0 bottom of the ninth, and they win 3-2. Of all the loudest venues I have ever witnessed, this was the loudest, bar none....

AMBST95 07-16-2014 03:14 PM

The most historic game I saw in person was the first and second half of Game 5 of the 2008 World Series. The weather was awful but the delay made the second half even more exciting, talking about what the managers would do.

The other I wish I could forget 8/22/2007 there was a doubleheader in Bmore. Dave Trembley had just signed a deal to be the new manager of the O's and had a 3-0 lead over the Rangers. Then the Orioles gave up 33 unanswered runs. They went on to lose Game 1 30-3 to the Rangers. They didn't want to waste the bullpen for Game 2 and Texas just teed off on the hapless Orioles arms. The O's went on to lose Game 2 as well by a more respectable 9-7.

Ryan's Guinness Book record

My dad took me to the 1974 Game in which Ryan recorded the fastest pitch - still record in Guinness Book.

I really don't know if he should legit still hold record? Some pitchers have posted faster? Something about when they clocked it - apparently in 1974 the clocked it as the baseball went over home plate with 100.9 mph. If they clocked at release point, it may have been much faster than that, upwards of 105 mph or even faster. I do know that the pitch had to be a strike to qualify for the record. Perhaps today they clock pitchers at release point instead? And maybe nowadays pitches do not have to be strikes? Help. Thanks.

Al C.risafulli 07-21-2014 07:34 PM

As a boy, I was at the Bobby Murcer game in 1979, the first game after Thurman Munson's funeral, when Murcer delivered the eulogy and then drove in 5 runs to singlehandedly beat the Baltimore Orioles. Probably the only highlight of the 1979 season for Yankee fans.

Also as a boy, on the football side, I was at the New York Giant game that resulted in "the fumble," when instead of sitting on the ball with less than 30 seconds in the game, Joe Pisarcik handed off to Larry Csonka, who fumbled the ball. Herm Edwards picked up the ball and galloped for a touchdown and an impossible Eagles win.

Since I've been a grown man, I haven't been to any games of historical consequence.

Game 4 of the 2004 World Series. Picked up one of my college baseball coaches on the way from Indy to St Louis to watch the Sox win. It couldn't have worked out better. Even going into work the next day having not slept at all was rather enjoyable after that. Hard to believe it's been nearly 10 years ago.

Time for this thread to pop up again.

I saw an historic game, but then I didnt.

I was at Yankee Stadium on Saturday August 9th and Derek Jeter got the hit that moved him past Honus Wagner on the alltime career hit list. It was a hot brutal day but seeing this made it worth it.

Then a few days later I read that they later (a couple of days later) made an official scoring change on a hit that Jeter was given in a game prior to the game I was at. They took a hit away from him and now this means that the hit I saw only TIED Wagner, it was NOT the hit that put him ahead of Wagner. Geez.

Two come to mind.

The 2002 All Star game, "The Tie"

1972 ALCS Bert Campaneris throws bat at Lerrin LeGrow after getting hit (on Billy Martin's command).

1973 Oakland A's Game 7 and 1974 Game 5 WS clinching games.

Bonds breaking McGwire's single season HR record.

1975 Last game of regular season four A's pitchers combine for no-hitter.

1984 World Series Game 4

Roger Clemens 20K game at Detroit

Perhaps the two greatest regular season games ever.

1. July 24, 2004. NY at Boston. Jason Varitek/Arod brawl capped off by Bill Mueller's GW HR off of Mariano Rivera.

2. October 6, 2009 AL Tie-breaker game between Detroit and Minnesota.

Also game 1 of the 1987 World Series.

I was in Yankee stadium on September 10th, 2001 to see the Yankees vs. Red Sox, Clemens was pitching for his 20th win that night.

The game was badly rained out.......

And I think we ALL know what happened on September 11th, 2001 :(

Indians win last champions ship 1948/Jim Browns first and last games. Clevleand Browns NFL last championship 1964.Stargell hit a ball out of Doger stadium 1973
Mike Piazza hit one out of Doger Stadium in 97
Liston knock out Patterson Chicago Stadium.
I was lucky enough to see Williams, Dimaggio, Mantle and Mays play but
the one thing I remember the most was Satchel Paige driveing a ball to center field in Cleveland and being thrown out at first base. Center field was 460 ft away. He just stood there for a moment and watched and then walked to first base with a big smile.:)

Centauri 09-03-2014 12:37 PM

I saw Canseco give my Indians a home run by playing a fly ball off his head and over the fence. As good as any perfect game or World Series clincher.

Saw Steve Carlton get his 15th straight win in 1972 against the Reds. Sort of lost his effectiveness a bit after that game but still had a great year accumulating 46% of the team's wins that season.

cmoore330 09-03-2014 01:56 PM

My friends and I had tickets to a nondescript late season Astros and Giants game on September 11, 2001. Game gets pushed back to October with Barry Bonds coming to town sitting on 69 home runs. We are sitting in right-center behind the bullpen at Enron Field.

First time he comes up to bat, 500 cram into our section to have a shot at #70 if it happens. Intentional walk. They bring in about 20 ushers to check tickets in our section for the rest of the game. One more intentional walk, hit by pitch, single and pop up.

Two days later he hits #70 and finishes with three more at home. That ticket stub is surreal to look at with all of the negative history tied to it: Sept. 11, Enron and Bonds.

Tobacco&Gum 09-03-2014 02:03 PM

Great thread!

Had Yanks season tickets for 5 seasons and was lucky enough to see a bunch of great moments.

2008-AS Game, and final game at Yankee Stadium

2009-First game at Yankee Stadium, Jeter passes Gehrig to become all time Yankees hits leader, WS game 6.

2011-Jeter 3000th hit, and Mariano's 602nd save.

Another great one was the 2008 HR Derby. Josh Hamilton lost in the final round, but put on an absolute show in the early rounds. It was the only time I saw a ball hit almost half way up the wall behind the right field bleachers at Old Yankee Stadium.

1997 Bucs-Astros Combind Extra Inning No-No

First and only I believe combined extra inning no-no from Francisco Cordova & Ricardo Rincon, highlighted by a pinch hit 3 run homer in the 10th by Mark Smith to win it. It was the first non opening day sellout for the Buccos since John Candelaria pitched in 1975 in Three Rivers Stadium. It was my first Buccos game, and I've been going out for 17 yrs now. We had seats 13 rows behind the Astros dugout, and a night I'll never forget.

Eric72 09-03-2014 07:03 PM

The most "historic" game I have attended was in Philadelphia, at Veterans Stadium. A young player had recently been called up from the minors. His name was Chase Utley.

He went deep for his first MLB hit...a home run. It happened to be a Grand Slam. At the beginning of his next at bat, the theme song from Superman played over the loudspeakers.

From that point on, I have watched his career with great interest. He turned out to be a pretty good ballplayer.

Best regards,

Eric

Great thread, really haven't been to very many games, but 2 come to mind.

Most historic game - Cal Ripken 2,131 game (seems like quite a few of us were at this one)

Best game - April 20, 2013 my first game with my 2 boys (9 and 11 at the time) in Pittsburgh to see my Pirates. Even though they lost still a game I will always remember.

Tim

BearBailey 09-03-2014 10:20 PM

Well historic it has to be the only 7 inning save in MLB history. Rangers at Orioles jauquin Benoit got. 7 inning save only one ever. orioles beam Arod in first as pay back for night before starter tries to hit first batter and both teams are warned, tries to hit him with next pitch misses and is ejected. Todd Van Poppel who is supposed to start next night goes 2 innings for the win and Benoit gets a 7 inning save.
Now that is historic! Sad but true!

Pete Rose's 3,500th hit

At Shea Stadium. Phillies fan and my brother and I didn't even know it until they showed it on the scoreboard. I scored the game (Trillo hit a line drive home run) and I just recently found my ticket stub!

I think before that game (maybe it was a different game at Shea) they had some pro-softball players hitting home runs into the upper deck. At least that's what I remember as a kid.

Bpm0014 09-04-2014 12:04 AM

Pcoz. I was at that game too. I'm from Pgh as well. Incredible game, incredible energy (for a Pirates game at that time). I was also at the 94 All Star Game in Pgh which was won on a Moises Alou walk off which scored Tomy Gwynn.

Matt Cain perfect game.

I also saw a 3-HR game (Ben Oglivie for Milwaukee at Tiger Stadium), and a cycle (Eric Byrnes for Oakland at then-Pac Bell Park).

NFL & MLB games

FB

September 24, 1972, four of us drove down to Memorial Stadium (Balt.) to see a Jets game. In those days all tickets at Shea were sold out. So, us diehard Jets fans
would drive to Baltimore or Foxboro (Mass.) to catch a Jets game.

Anyhow, this was really one wild passing game......Joe Namath threw for 496 yards and Johnny Unitas threw for 376 yards. The Jets won it by the score of 44 - 34.
It was certainly the greatest NFL game that I was ever at; and, it was well worth the trip from the Jersey Shore. Plus, got to see my all-time favorites, Don Maynard
and John Riggins, catch 28-yard and 67-yard passes, respectively from Broadway Joe.

Still have my ticket stub...... Check-out the $6.60 price....and we had great seats 3 rows up on the 50 yard line.

The absolute greatest sports event that I have seen was the 5th game of the 1956 World Series. Even though I was not at Yankee Stadium that day,
it is still worth noting here. I saw the entire game on TV in the comfort of my folks home in Hillside, NJ.

The NL Wild Card Game last year was the first time the Pirates were in the post season in 20 years. And its the loudest thing I've been involved in. Louder than any of the three conflicts or dozen concerts I've been to. Way awesome and for Pittsburgh it was historic. There was no one in line for concessions that game. People were sprinting to the restrooms.

gawaintheknight 09-06-2014 06:26 PM

March 6, 1996, Detroit Red Wings at Hartford Whalers, Detroit's goalie Chris Osgood scored a goal by shooting the puck down the ice into the opposing net. That made him the first NHL goalie not named Ron Hextall to score that way, although I didn't realize it at the time. It's still only ever happened seven times.

A weak entry, as I haven't had the chance to go to many games, but mine would have to be Eddie Murray going for HR #500 in an away game at Seattle...

Alas, Eddie didn't get it that day, to my disappointment, despite my group of 6 friends lined up with "5 0 0 H R S" painted across our bare chests in a pathetic attempt to get on TV.

The surrounding crowd was completely unaware, and couldn't figure out why we were making such a scene every time he came to bat!

In the 6th row behind the visitor's on-deck circle at Busch Stadium, I cheered Mark Reynolds on to get three strike-outs that day, breaking and setting the MLB single season record for most Ks in a season. I might have been the only one in the stadium aware that this history was being made. Some of the shine of that day has worn off since the record has been broken (several times, I think) in the years following.

Last game of the 1967 Red Sox season vs Minnesota, Sox take the AL pennant.

21AUG75 - Game at Wrigley Field: Reuschel brothers combine for a 7-0 shutout of the Dodgers.

21OCT98 - Game 4 of WS. It was sad to see the Yanks celebrating on the Pads home field.

24SEP2010 - Aroldis Chapman hits 105MPH in a MLB game (Petco Park, San Diego). Shortly after he hit 105, they stopped displaying the pitch speed in the lower left field corner board. Perhaps they thought it was psyching out the pathetically poor hitting Padres.

The games above are the ones I remember. I've attended plenty of other games. The most games I attended in one season was about 76 (give or take a game) back in 1977 or 1978 (Padres).

Several "notable" games but nothing historic.

2005 WS Game 1 - White Sox vs Astros (Clemens gets lit up)
2006 WS Game 1 & 2 - Tigers vs Cards (Kenny Rogers "Pine Tar Game")
2007 WS Game 3 - Red Sox vs Rockies (absolutely nothing of note)

2007 All Star Game - San Francisco
2009 All Star Game - St Louis

I have been to (almost literally) a thousand different games in my lifetime. I have yet to attend a game featuring a no-hitter -or- even catch a foul ball. The last one bugs me to no end.

Rich I totally understand the not catching a foul ball. I have been to around 4-500 games and have never got one. I went to every game Wade Boggs played against the Twins his last 10 years and sat in the area he sprayed fouls.:(

Rich,

Have you ever been to batting practice? Surely, you should have had a few opportunities given the number of games you've been to...

Jose Canseco's pitching performance at Fenway Park against the Red Sox.

Jose blew out his arm that game, and the rest is history

Greg set the then record for most consecutive innings without a walk. The next inning he was hit by a pitch.

I haven't been to as many BPs as I should. They are a good chance for home run balls. Foul balls are a little tougher because of the cages used around home plate. Ive had several very close calls, but not one that Ive had my hands on.

Game 7 of the 2004 NLCS....first time the Cardinals go back to the World Series since 1987. Edmonds unbelievable diving catch in CF and then Scott Rolen taking the Rocket deep to give the Cards the late lead. Spent the last 2 innings in the concourse too nervous to watch it live!

Tied would be the last game of the 1998 season, Cardinals-Expos, a certain roided-up first basemen goes deep twice to get to 70. It's all tainted now but man that place went bonkers!

Jim Abbott's no-hitter. I hope I see another one live at some point.

Strasburg's debut (I know it's not really historic at this point) was an incredible night. Nationals Park had a pulse for the first time in its life.

2001 World Series, Game 5 Yankees v. Diamondbacks. Brocious hits a home run in bottom of the ninth to tie game. It was delirium.

I posted previously that I had attended Derek Jeter's 3,000th hit game. Well, this year my wife treated my son-in-law and me (I still haven't summoned up the courage to ask her how much she spent for the tickets) to Jeter's last Yankee Stadium game. Another magical ending!

I attended the 1987 and 1991 seventh game WS victories for the Twins, Winfield's 3000th hit game, and the Metrodome home opener in 1982. Also made a good one-handed foul ball catch at the Dome that got me on the jumbo screen for a few seconds in 1984.

As a 14-year old in 1971, I desperately wanted to see Harmon Killebrew's 500th home run in person, but my family could only afford to go to one game, and we missed it by a week or so.

I saw the only Tampa Bay Rays World Series game win. That's the best I've got.
