Today's record is tomorrow's bargain. I've learned that. Any time I've ponied up for a record high I've never regretted it. It usually means the card was a stunner and brings me great joy. I did it on my 51B, 52T and 56T Mantle's just to name a few and would gladly do it again.
|
curious as to what record we are talking about?
highest i see was a lil over $19K for the 53t psa 7 but doesn't not appear to be the same flip... probably did, but am i missing something that isn't on vcp or was it reholdered? edit: i do see that another psa 7 will be hitting the pop report tomorrow... |
Was a private sale. Actually easily half my purchases are private sales, now that I think about it. VCP is very helpful, but in many cases it lags well behind what's happening in private sales. Eventually it catches up tho.
|
Matt needs a separate price guide. :D
|
My man, I wouldn't wish my price guide on anyone, LOL! No one should have to pay some of those prices :D

Okay, guys. Another for my Top 100...Minnie Minoso. I will be SHOCKED if it looks this nice in person. Will make the rest of my cards look like crap next to it.

i hope so. very nice earthly tones to it, as well.
congrats. |
53 Mick

Might as well follow the trend of 53 Mick. Just picked this up from a fellow board member. Very happy with the corners and the centering. Has a crease on the front that doesn't detract too much from the card. The big killer is some paper loss on the back. But from the front this has a very strong eye appeal for me.

49 Bowman Jackie

Got this today in a private sale.
|
Cool Jackie.
|
Nice looking Jackie for BVG 1.5!!! Congrats.

Never laid eyes on that 53B Minoso card before. Ya see something new here every day. Really striking card. Ethereal background. Great Jackie-- sure doesn't hit the eye like a 1.5. |
Some great cardboard picked up here this month. I haven't posted over here much, but maybe I'll start. My current focus is HOF rookies, as I'm slowly chipping away at the post-war set. Here are a couple of recent pickups.

The top right side is a bit hinky, but man is this a tough variation to find…
Attachment 220782 We used to give my friend various Shellenback cards on his birthday way back when after he made a seemingly spurious claim of being his nephew. |
1969
Agreed Darren, that one is "stupid" tough :)
Not sure if it is really a variation or a scarce recurring print defect, but it has hobby recognition as a variation and is much sought after |
62 Topps #594

I thought my '62 Topps Dodgers Team Set was complete until I discovered Doug Camilli appeared on this multi-player rookie catcher card alongside Bob Uecker. Now my team set is complete again (I think).

Had been looking for A Johnston Aaron. Hadn't planned on getting a signed one but couldn't resist making an offer on this one.
|
Ian, that Aaron card is fantastic!

Amazing Johnston's Aaron! I received both of these TTM in December:

Tabs cut off and the original owner wrote on the back, but they still look great to me.

Never came across this problem before, but I will admit, my computer is likely on it's last leg. I use Google Chrome, if that means anything? Anyone else have or is having trouble seeing all pics posted in this site? |
Maz
|
Wow! !!! Not all 5's are equal are they? That Maz is outstanding! Why the low grade?
|
Very nice Maz. pickup. Very strong for the grade. Congrats.
|
Max
Very nice card
|
that maz is fantastic, great eye!
looks like only that small wrinkle in the top right corner is what keeps it in that 5... corners and everything else are remarkable and why it's in the 5 and not a 4.5. steal of a deal for the eye appeal though and congrats! http://caimages.collectors.com/psaim...4/76brett8.jpg |
Nice Maz.

Cy Young collection....complete
1 Attachment(s)
And with this 1950 Bowman Don Newcombe I have finally completed my Cy Young winner rookie (or whatever is considered a "first year" or "prospect" nowadays) collection. This one doesn't have the vaunted centering we like to see usually but this card is absolutely pristine otherwise. Looks like it went out of the pack directly into a time capsule. I hope I look this good when I'm 65.
Maybe I'll post a group photo of my Cy collection later. Might be fun to see them all together. |
Nice Newcombe! Please do post that group photo.

Picked up the last card I needed for the second half of my Top 100 display. With Ruth and Gehrig still outstanding, could be a while before I finish the first half.

With the addition of Monte Irvin (RIP), 90 down, 10 to go on my Top 100
Like many of you, have really come to love the look of 1953 Color Bowman. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...bb8506b645.jpg |

Bought a collection that had 310 !958 Topps in it. Also had 530 1959 Topps. Most of the 59's are in super nice condition. Haven't decided if I will get them graded or not. I mainly collect prewar. If I got them graded which company should I use? Also had 46 of the Ted Williams in the collection and 110 Topps Football. Not sure what I am going to do with the cards yet.

Nice, are you a Mathews collector?

Nice display Jerry! The statue looks like it's in great condition.

Thanks Guys
Growing up in the 50's/60's, I was a Braves fan mainly because the first world series I remember watching on TV was when the 57 Braves defeated the Yankees in the world series. |
A pox on the houses of all those who got me started collecting wrappers. You know who you are.
1951 Blue Backs, 1955 and 1956 one cent wrappers............ From eBay and Bagger's........... |

Mathews is one of nine players with more than 500 HRs as a National Leaguer. Along with Mathews, two of these other players also hit home runs in the American League. Any guesses? |
Aaron?

Yes, Sosa, Aaron, and Mathews are the answers. An honorable mention is McCovey who also played in the AL for part of a season with Oakland; however, he didn't hit any home runs there.
Meanwhile, the other 5 players are NL lifers: Bonds, Mays, Schmidt, Banks, Ott. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk |

Great trivia question. I admit to finally resorting to Google to find out it was Sosa. My first thought was McCovey, but I couldn't remember if he hit a homer with Oakland. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
With the arrival by mail of my 67T Fergie Jenkins, I am at last able to post a 100% done Board #2 for my Top 100 display.
In contrast, Board #1 has 11 placeholders--the bottom row of 59F Williams cards and the 40PB Klein--that will ultimately be replaced. Will take a while though. Combined, when finished, the two boards will feature my personal slate of the 100 greatest players from 1933-1980. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...d8855f12f3.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...62da8a6741.jpg |

Still remember getting that card out of a pack in 1958. As a kid growing up in St Louis, it was a big deal
