Help with info on Mick's Manny's Baseball Land premium
2 Attachment(s)
Hi Gang:
I just picked up the below Manny's Baseball Land premium. This is listed as such on Kelly Eisenhower's site. He says year unknown. You can see it on page 5 in this link: http://mickeymantle7.net/mantle-premiums-2/ Yet looking at the top rated Mantle Master set on the PSA registry it shows a different pose listed as 1961. See also below in a PSA holder. I do not see this listed as Manny's in Kelly's list. I may have missed it. So, my questions are Are both of these Manny Baseball Land issues? Or is the PSA mislabeled or is Kelly's listing incorrect? Any help appreciated |

I hope you are doing well! They are both Manny Land Baseball photos. The photo with Mick in a batter's pose came with the Manny Land Yankee team set. The other is listed as a 1965 issue by KeyManCollectibles. http://keymancollectibles.com/photos...landphotos.htm There's also another Manny Land Baseball Mantle photo. It's basically the same photo as the one identified as a 1965 issue by Manny Land. But it has a slightly different cropping and it is attached to a Maris photo. It is 11 by 17. [Sorry about the large photos] |
Quote:
Thanks for the reply and link to Keyman. Keyman says: In 1965, Manny's issued additional pictures that measure 9x11. The larger pictures featured new players, and some like Mickey Mantle, with a different pose. However my photo measures the "normal' 8x10 not the 9x11 they note the 1965 Mantle is. Does yours measure 8x10 or 9x11? And another PSA anomaly, one of many that do not make sense to me, why is the 1961 Manny's on the checklist for the Mantle master set and not the 1965 Mantle from Manny's?? |

Picked this up in February to complete my set of '55 Armour coins. Took a long time to find this one!

black or silver?

Am I reading this wrong or were they acting like Charles was his first name and 'Mickey' (in air quotes) was merely a nickname??

One of my favorite objects of mantle I own. And funnily one of the cheapest you can get. Love the atmosphere this photo gives off. Would've loved to get a burger and eat on one of Mick's baseball tables.
But just as cool as the decor, is the story the back tells. Strong rain and the spotting of several tornadoes caused these travellers to head to Joplin and take shelter at Mick's holiday inn. Unfortunately I don't think they were there for the Mick! Would love to hear a story or two if anyone has stayed there in the past of how it was.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...c7995d4216.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d2b8796941.jpg |

As to the PSA question, it's probably because nobody has requested it be added or it was requested to be added but PSA declined because of insufficient information. |

Mike, good info for Fred. I asked Steven where he got the 1965 date, but have not yet heard back.
Wanted to show the 1962 Topps 318 “e” and no “e” variation that I mentioned in the variations thread. I’m sure my fellow Mick collectors will want to pick up both examples. Well, maybe Chris and Mike will :) The with “e” seems to be tougher to find. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cd479753b7.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...75fa147ebb.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d6f716c4c8.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a45b3578bc.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...19566a34fc.jpg |

Yeah, I'll have to make sure I have both. That means I'll need to find the one I have so I can make sure I get the other version. This just makes me realize how unorganized my "stuff" is. Haven't found it yet, but I'll look some more later today. In regards to the question about the Manny's photos, that brings up another question. Why are they called "Manny's" baseball photos. In going through the ads on: http://mickeymantle7.net/rare-ads-1961-1964/ I noticed ads from Marshall Oreck also offering 8x10 photo sets of the 18 MBL teams. I would guess they are the same ones sold by Manny's. This means Manny's Baseball Land was only a retail seller of the photos as was Oreck. So who actually produced the photos and what should they be called? |
Interesting Mike… it is so tough to accurately checklist all of his oddball items.
Fred, this is what Steven sent me: “The $1.00 "Special 11x17 of Maris & Mantle facing each other" is listed in a 1963 order form as such, and pictured in a 1964-'65 catalog. I've seen the 11x17 you have but not in a catalog, so I can't say what year your 11x17 was first issued. The "8x10" photos were issued in an odd size in 1965, 9" x 11" as evident by a couple of sets that have surfaced dated by the players that are in the set. The Mickey Mantle Swinging I believe were issued a number of years measuring 8x10, from 1961-1964, but the 9x11, was issued in 1965.” I don’t have the 9x11, so another something I will “need”. By chance did anyone else see the cupola from the Joplin hotel for sale on eBay? Pretty wild :) |
Quote:
Yeah, I saw the cupola listing on eBay. Only $999,999 (or best offer) plus $20,000 shipping. You getting it? :D |
Thanks Ben. Now it’s going to take me an hour to go through my collection to see how many 1962 Topps I have and whether I have both versions….

Dormand Jumbo Mantle Postcards
Haven`t posted in this thread for some time now but never get tired of checking out fellow 54`ers newest additions. For me, couple of 1953 Dormand Jumbo postcards. Really like the image and wow they are large (9 X 12) so condition can be a real challenge. Bye the way, Jesse outstanding my man. Keep them coming......

Very, VERY nice Mick eye candy Hugh and Jesse. Thanks for sharing your Mantle joy! They are a joy to behold. :D --Brian Powell
PS---With the patch signifying the 50th anniversary of the New York Yankees on his sleeve, that would date the photo on the regal Dormand to 1952, Mickey Mantle's break-out year! |

The official Mickey Mantle Pickup Thread. All Mick, all the time!
I just started collecting Mickey. It started with the 68 Super Stars card I had as a kid. This isn’t the same one. The original along with the rest of my collection was either lost or stolen, but I never forgot about it.
When I came back to the hobby at the end of 2018, it took about a year for me to realize I enjoyed collecting vintage. I started with Willie Mays, because I also had some of his cards when I was a kid, and up to now have been chasing him, Hank Aaron, and Sandy Koufax. I always thought Mantle’s cards would be too expensive but checking comps, they seem to be more affordable than I thought. These are lower-grade as I just really wanted the cards and don’t care as much about the grades, but I’ve been trying to get them as well-centered as possible. I don’t mind if they’re a little off though. I’m not sure it’s the design alone that bothers me, but I will be looking for a Manager’s Dream in a higher grade. My most recent pickup was the 67, but embarrassed to admit I overpaid about $100 for it. To be honest, I had spent much of that day trying to purchase a 58 Aaron on MySlabs which fell through, and being fatigued by hours of scouring eBay for a fairly priced card, I came across it but forgot to check comps before putting in my bid. It was sitting around $230 with 2 hours left IIRC, and I thought I could snipe it for a little above that, but I went all in and ended up bidding what I assumed was the highest the card could be worth only to learn the previous bidder was willing to pay just as much for it, so no savings there… I was a little upset at myself learning I could have gotten a 4-4.5 for what I paid if I just checked comps, but it was too late because I had already won the auction. Oh well. I do like the card and am happy with how it looks, and since it’s a PC card I’m not worried about losing money on it, so it’s not that bad as long as I don’t keep doing this. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1dd1f59cdb.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1f558666c8.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...3ef5122be8.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6122e5cb81.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...311cb1fc7f.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Jesse, always a pleasure to see that group of Mantles. The 53T is a very, very special card. That red corner is a 10, which is beyond uncommon. And it is always great to see that when you sell a card, that it remains in the collection for many years-- brings a smile and glad the 51 and 57 are appreciated parts of your amazing collection! I have shown these two favorites before, but I recently took this pic and just love how it came out, and how these two first Topps cards look side by side. I believe this photo should always brighten the day of any Mantle fan! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...095c49a3_z.jpg |

First time posting within this thread. I've picked up a few Mantle cards throughout the years. This one is my favorite. I "overpaid" for it back in 2016. I'd buy a dozen more at that price these days.

The ‘63 base card never seems to get a ton of love, but it’s one of my favorites from the decade. The blue and green just pop. This one is centered a tad low, but can’t complain about s-s.

Help IDing Mantle photos
6 Attachment(s)
Hey All:
I am not a Mickey Mantle collector but I was able to pick up the below. I have been trying to find info on some of them so when I sell them I can list them properly.. Obviously I know the first is a Rawlings premium and I have been told the second was issued with a Mantle game. The third is an individual Manny's baseball land issue that was also issued attached to a Maris that shared a common border. Is this correct? The others I cannot ID Can anyone know what the smaller photo 6 3/4 x 8 1/2 batting RH with stadium and sky is or the kneeling with bat, or finally, batting RH with Yankee logo Lower left. Any help appreciated |
I know nothing about them, but neat items Fred

1. Rawlings Premium (as you said) 2. Big League Baseball Game, Gardner Toys (free photo included with game) 3. Manny’s Baseball Land (as you said) 4. Unknown (photo by Luis Requena, but I checked with Kelly Eisenhauer, who is an expert in Mantle items, years ago and he had no clue who issued the premium) (one was listed for sale in 2014 for $75 and I likely purchase it) 5. No clue but certainly looks 1960s. I’d listed as a “1960s Premium Photo” and you should get some interest on eBay. 6. 1960s Yankees Stadium Giveaway Photo (per Keyman Collectibles) (http://keymancollectibles.com/mickeymantlephotos.htm) |

Chris: Thanks for your help in trying to ID some of the Mick premiums I showed above. #5 you say looks 1960's. Not that it means anything but 1956 was written on the bottom right corner by someone sometime. These all came from an old collection. This leads me to think it may actually be from 1956. Ben W. contacted me privately about info he got from the guy he got his kneeling premium from. This is the info his seller told him: Regarding the premium photo, I obtained the item in 1958 (when I was 12 years old and had been collecting Mantle cards since I was 10). I wrote Mantle asking for an autographed photo. He responded on July 21, 1958 with an autographed letter enclosing the premium photo. I still have the letter, which I keep in a frame in my den. So it appears this is either a team or personal Mantle premium mailed out to fans in the late 50's. Since the seller of Ben's said he got his in 1958 it is possible it could have been around for a few years before like 1956 that is on mine. Wondering the best way to get these into Mantle collectors hands. BST here, ebay or give them to an auction house? |

What a collection of Mantle's. |

As for how to sell them, I’ll defer to others. It’s so hard to price them that my gut would be eBay. But I haven’t bought/sold much in recent years. |

A couple of interesting pickups.
Those who collect the Mantle Country Cookin' matchbooks know there are several variations based on the restaurant address listed on the inside. In addition to the 6 addresses (one having a variation of its own to make 7 different), there is a variation without an address. I picked up another variation of the "no address" variation. The first picture is of the matchbook I recently acquired, the second is of the one I've had for a while. Obviously the text layout is different. Another interesting pickup is a SportsPix premium, see attached. I know there are 3 known variations, of which I have 2. One is 8"-by-10", one is 8"-by-10-1/2", and one is 8"-by-11" (I don't have this one). My new pickup is 8"-by-10" and is printed on non-glossy paper (the others are on glossy paper). The address is the same as on the 8"-by-10-1/2" version, although on this version it is not as close to the Mantle photo. I'm not 100% sure it's a legitimate version and not some "fantasy" piece. Does anyone else have this version? |

Nice pickups Mike.
You have both the 8 and 9 line no address on my checklist :) Not sure about a non glossy sports pix. Mine are thin paper, but glossy. I am a fan of the "Dee" Love error myself! haha |

I picked up a 1960 Venezuelan Mantle Sticker. It is approximately 2 inches by 3-1/8 inches These are apparently pretty rare.
https://www.sportscollectorsdaily.co...ker-album-set/ But I have a problem with it. It has a tear at the top that is about 1.5 cm long. The tear occurred while in transit. The seller simply put the sticker in a penny sleeve, put that in a top loader, and then put that in a 9-by-12 mailer. It was able to freely move about within the mailer. Consequently, the penny sleeve arrived out of the top loader and the sticker out of the penny sleeve. And it was torn which it wasn't previously. I would like to get a partial refund from the seller due to his negligent packaging and subsequent damage. The question is, how much should I push for? I suppose that would depend on how much the value is after the tear. That would be subtracted from what I paid to determine the refund. So, the question is, how much would this be worth with the tear? |
Quote:
I am very sorry. This must be very upsetting. --- Brian Powell |
I agree, 50% refund minimum!
