Hand made Cobb Potcard

Here is a hand made Ty Cobb postcard. Pretty sure 1 of 1.

Joe, that is an awesome card.

Thanks, had it for many years.

1907 Cubs PC
No, it didn't come from Virginia, as far as I know. I picked it up at postcard show in Overland Park, KS about 6 weeks ago.

No Big Leaguers, but great image

I love this one. American pastoral scene, early 1900s.
There are shadow figures of fans standing and sitting in the grove of trees down the LF line. (Cue the Ken Burns music/narration in the background here ;) The original is sharper but had to shrink the file down to upload. Enjoy. |
I’m from Michigan, great PC.

Just seeing this one. That is a cool postcard!

Warren Giles (HOF) - 1918 Moline, Illinois High School basketball coach. He began coaching baseball the following year in Moline. Warren Giles was National League baseball's President for 18 years (1952-1969). He was elected to the Hall of Fame shortly after his death in 1979.

Unlike many of rickalaska’s bogus/spurious identifications of players on team postcards, this one he shared of Warren Giles with Moline is actually legit. I sold this postcard a few years ago on LOTG.
Here’s another one of Giles: https://photos.imageevent.com/derekg...0s%20Giles.jpg |

Derek - What was that unprovoked SMART A__ __ comment about??? Attached is the sale from LOTG when I bought the postcard 6 years ago. It also mentions the names on back. You are real lucky you are not within arms reach - any time big mouth |
Rick, many of your posts are reaches at best and hilarious at worst. For example the columbia U pc that doesn't show anybody remotely close to Eddie Collins. Or your photo match of Joe McCarthys Back.
It's fun to imagine famous players that could be shown on a postcard, And trying to photo match them. But when the majority of your posts are weird photo match reaches with zero historic proof its hard to take your posts without a massive grain of salt. So when you post something nice and absolutely genuine it's rightfully shocking and cool to see. Not trying to take a swing at you, I enjoy old baseball postcards regardless of who's in them. But if you wonder why you never get responses, that's why. And threatening people is pretty low by the way. |
Postings
My response to Granger was pretty low??? I did nothing to provoke those comments
I am only trying to contribute to the thread - many times there are no posts for over a month. I have been collecting since 1969, so do have some experience. The Columbia photo was produced in New York, and yes, that individual in the middle does look like Collins. If you don't think so, that is your opinion. What makes you think that only you or Granger know everything about everything? The post about McCarthy - I just said it was my best guess - if you don't agree, that is for you to prove otherwise. It is fine to have debate, but Granger is not trying to debate - he thinks he is Mr. Know it all It's no wonder a lot of people don't want to post |

Is this not a threat? Or do you just want to give him an extra hard high five? I don't understand. Also, I don't think I'm always right. But I do only buy photographic items that are 100% provable who is shown, so maybe in that sense I am? I was just letting you know my thoughts on why your posts never get replies, especially when some "show" pre rookie images of hofers, that's a huge deal and would warrant tons of replies. But the provenance needs to be ironclad. Not trying to argue. |
Rick - the last time someone challenged you on a player id you removed 75% of your posts from this thread. I think it was on Burleigh Grimes but it might have been before that. As a HoF “earliest card” collector, the team postcards you have shared in this thread are (or at least were) of keen interest to me. When holes were poked, I realized a lot of your material was built on hope, not facts or provenance. Don’t get me wrong, you have a great collection and there are many legit items mixed in, but when you state with confidence that a certain player is on a postcard and you’re proven wrong (multiple times), but don’t accept that you were wrong, you lose credibility. Period.
As I stated, I am quite confident that Giles is pictured on your Moline HS basketball postcard. In this particular instance, I was happy to vouch for the postcard, making sure to be clear that I was not vouching for you or certain other cards that you’ve posted. I stand by my statements and the content of my posts 100%. How about you? Are you brave enough to state that you may have been wrong or aren’t sure whether certain players are actually on cards? Are you willing to add back all the content you deleted years ago? |

The writing on the card is offensive, but it's from 1910. It is postmarked from the fight city (San Francisco) the day after the fight. It was apparently mailed by someone who attended the bout.

I was browsing ebay and saw the postcard below. I thought it was a cool piece and then I saw the back of the post card. It doesn't have a postal cancellation (which, to me would have made it even better), but the writing on the back is what drew me to the card. I thought it was just too cool, even with the missing corner.
The seller is "outoftheparkthrift" on ebay. He's got lots of neat items for sale. Then I found out the seller is Travis Wise (tlwise12) on N54. Attachment 637893 |

1950 Detroit Tigers Postcard with a bit of hobby history on the back. July 7, 1950 (postally stamped with Washington DC Sesquicentennial 3c stamp). Postal Cancel: "HIRE THE HANDICAPPED IT'S GOOD BUSINESS".
Addressed to Joe Cronin 301 W. Ayer St. Ironwood, Mich. (Not the contemporary Boston Red Sox player) https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries...bHDYqbAfWZ5pYg This Joe Cronin worked for the Sacramento Kings as the Team Historian. This postcard would have been from when he was about 12. Quote:
1) Identify the player? 2) Identify the set? Cardstock is thin and lightly glossy, with a printed postcard back. 3) Are the words in the parenthesis "Pierce Wertz" or "Price Thirty" or something else? 4) Has anyone else seen other postcards for this Baseball's Best Fan Club of 1950 before? Maybe you can identify the sender. |
That appears to be Dick Wakefield. The image looks like it's been taken from a slightly different angle than his Exhibit card.

Just picked this one up. Nothing super crazy, but I grew up a couple towns over from these two teams, and it’s not every day you can find local baseball history in an area that small.

Many thanks to Net54 member Derek for helping me add this amazing postcard to my Jim Thorpe collection!
I sold what I thought was my grail card for about 40 years — a nice '86 Jordan — to make this purchase (and a few others) happen. Funny how joining Net54 can change your collecting perspective -- I decided I'd rather have a pop 35 instead of a pop 33,500. |

He was not the only athlete to pose at those steps. Attachment 669704 This is Donnell Young. He competed in the 200m and 400m at Stockholm. He competed for the BAA. Went to Amherst. Professor at Amherst, Carleton, Arizona, William and Mary, Maine and George Washington. Worked as a substitute teacher in his home town after retirement. Descended from John Alden of Pilgrim fame. Lived to 101. This is from a group of small photos and RPPC's taken by a competitor/coach in 1912 that I just acquired. |
That is really nice...Congrats

That Rose postcard of Matty is absolutely beautiful!
I love that image of Mathewson. I wish that that it was included in the T206 set. It may technically be a "1", but what a great looking card. |

Old Avery sure had it out for Jim over the next 40 years. That George S. Patton was also a competitor in the pentathlon is mind-blowing, with Jim also playing against Eisenhower soon thereafter. |

The modern pentathlon, aka the military pentathlon consisted of rapid fire pistol shooting, épée fencing, 300m swim, equestrian cross country steeplechase and 4000m cross country run. Patton competed in this. I believe you had to be serving in the military to compete in the modern pentathlon as only men and military could compete in the equestrian events from the start in 1912 until 1948. This is still an event though the individual events have changed. I am working on the 1912 Stockholm set. I currently have 71 of at least 295 in the set. One of mine has two different poses of an American shooter. I also just won one on ebay yesterday to make 72. |
