Well, half a scorecard is better than no scorecard at all! And that is one petite scorecard!

The program below is from when Unitas threw his 100th TD pass. He became the fastest to throw 100 passing TDs, and accomplished this in his 53rd game, during his streak of 47 consecutive games in which he threw at least 1 touchdown pass. Marino would later become the fastest to 100 TD passes in 1986, needing only 44 games to do so.

In honor of Tim McCarver, here is his third career game, his second appearance at catcher, and the first time he caught Bob Gibson. This was the first time the team won with him behind the plate, and it was Gibson's second career win, versus five losses.

Many of us have heard the story of McCarver going out to the mound when Gibson pitched and being told by the pitcher to get back behind the plate. "The only thing you know about pitching," Gibson said, "is how hard it is to hit."

It's quite possible that at some point during this 6-4 win, which ended with McCarver 0-10 at the plate so far in his career, Gibson said exactly that to McCarver first the very first time.

Note that while the person who scored this game shows McCarver getting singles in the 5th and 9th, both were actually fielder's choice outs where he ended up at first base.

So, I don't have lots of scorecards, but these are cool. I got these when my father bought part of Ken Smith's collection back in the 1980's. These are Puerto Rican winter league programs 1954-58. I have 7 or 8 of them. lots of notes about players in the margins. A few are scored including this one from 1954. You might recognize a couple guys on this team

I was at that game at Crosley Field! Hammerin' Hank's 3,000th hit was a little dribbler up the middle that somehow found its way through the infield. It was the second game of a double-header (The Reds won Game 1, thanks to homers by Rose and Perez).

Still an unforgettable moment in which Hank was greeted and congratulated by Stan Musial, who was in the crowd that day. Awesome Program!

Can you possibly post a photo of the Reds lineup page? I think Perez had 5 consecutive hits in the nightcap to help the Reds to a comeback victory. But my memory may be playing tricks on me.

Thanks so much for posting this!

Thanks so much, Doug and 5-Tool Player!

Great to see both examples, and how much differently their "scorekeepers" handled recording it. Very cool that you both have one! :D

jethrod3 02-26-2023 07:51 PM

Always a nice bonus to have a ticket accompanying a scorecard, and you scored a double-bonus with those 2 tix to the Lasorda game, Doug! Did you know they were there when you bought the scorecard or was it a complete surprise?

I don't remember. I don't really specifically collect tickets so I don't really pay much attention to them. It's all about the scored program for me.

This program and ticket stub are from Bobby Orr’s NHL debut. I also have this scored program from an early Dummy Hoy game.

Have quite a few others from hockey and early baseball, happy to share later on. I love the feel of culture back in those days that you get from the programs. And many are still quite reasonable in price as others have stated. A really great collectible.

This is an incredibly rare program from the Jackie Robinson All-Stars game against the Creoles All-Stars.

The Jackie Robinson All-Stars generally had generic programs which could be used for any game. This is the only game-specific program from the JR All-Stars that I have ever seen (although I imagine others exist).

I ran across an old Dodgers program/scorecard & ticket stub combo that I finally had time to look at and research a bit. The date based on the scorecard indicates nothing of significance happened in that game (7/21/74). But I did find something interesting about the program that motivated me to post a couple of pics and share with the group.

Apparently the Dodgers must have accepted baseball-related personal ads to run in some of their programs to generate revenue. Below is one such ad (from the 7/21/74 program) from an early collector of memorabilia the type of which would be of obvious interest to those that have contributed to this thread or a sister thread on tickets/stubs. One can only wonder what responses the person got, and if he/she held on to any of the items that they received from placing the ad!

I just picked this program up. It was from a 1967 Charity Testimonial Banquet hosted in Eerie PA. First time I have come across one of these. The honorees were the MLB MVP Clemente and NFL MVP Bart Starr. Pirates manager Harry Walker was in attendance as well as was HOF member Garo Yepremian who had just completed his rookie season that saw him set an NFL record six Field Goals in a single game. Bob Prince was the MC. Each one of them signed this program. I found a photo of Clemente and Starr at the event. If you look at Starr’s left hand he is holding a copy of this program.

Whoops I stand corrected Garo is not in the NFL HOF. How embarrassing for both of us.

This is very cool … Greg Luzinski was my high school baseball coach. Great guy.

But who is that listed behind him in the order? That should be John Vukovich. There is no #30 on the roster

I started this thread with a program from Jim Brown's last regular season game, and I was happy to recently add to my collection a program from Jim Browns first regular season game. It's got a little writing on the Willard Mullin cover, but these programs don't surface too often, so condition wasn't all that important in this case. Interestingly, the photo of Brown in the program appears to be the exact same photo used for his 1958 Topps rookie card!

Good one, Doug!
Note that Nolan wore uniform #34, not #30 in 1966.
When he pitched in 1968, as a rookie with the Mets, he started wearing #30.

Another great scorecard, Doug! Ryan got shelled in the first inning of the first game of a doubleheader, with the recorded attendance being less than 15,000. Again, you gotta wonder how many of these scorecards survived! The attendance for the card I posted for his first complete game was less than 10,000. I'm sure more are out there, but I certainly haven't seen any other examples of either!

One of the reasons I enjoy scored programs / scorecards is that each is a 1 of 1, to use the lingo of the modern collector. There are probably more of them out there somewhere, but each will use a different language to tell the same story.

Here is the same, yet different program that 5Tool posted previously from Nolan's first career win
