Johnny Vander Meer 1938 Snapshot

1 Attachment(s)
I also placed this on the resurrected snapshot thread, but I just picked up this vintage signed 1938 snapshot of Vandy.
Any board members have any idea where the photo may have been shot? He's obviously wearing a road grey Reds jersey... Any help would be appreciated!

Mike,
You overpaid...:p
Seriously though, what exactly is this, and approximately how big is it, because I have no sense of scale?
Thanks!

Looks like a coaster to me Scott. Here are a couple that I picked up earlier this month but they cost me $40 for the pair. I had to get them to go along with the other Moxie stuff. ;)

Very cool Mike! What era do you believe it is from? My guess was 1930's to 1950....

mjkm90 01-29-2011 09:00 AM

I'm guessing 40s or 50s. However, if you look at the attached link, it says the Jacob Ruppert company became Jacob Ruppert Inc. in 1933. The tray just says Jacob Ruppert USA is small print. Would it have the (Inc.) if it was manufactured after 1933?

red sox pennant

1 Attachment(s)
I picked this pennant up a couple months ago. I was wondering if anyone knew when it was from and if they have ever seen it before. I am guessing it is from the '20s or '30s but I am new to the game and only have a handful of pennants to go off of

perezfan 01-29-2011 04:23 PM

It's reeeeeally rare. That is a surprisingly tough late 1930s - early 40s Red Sox variation that you simply never see. I picked mine up around 1990 and just sold it last year. I did so reluctantly, because within that 20 year span, I NEVER saw another (and I search these things almost every week).

Congrats on a very nice pickup!

perezfan 01-29-2011 04:28 PM

Just wanted to add that if you un-knot the tassels, the white felt binding strip might lay down better (and possibly span from top to bottom). The outer plastic sleeve should then provide adequate pressure against it, to keep pressed flat.

If this doesn't bother you, nevermind

DanD048 01-30-2011 06:43 PM

Thanks for the tip on tassels,
Any idea how much it is actually worth roughly? I realize it is probably hard to put a value on it if there aren't may around. I don't really plan on selling it but I wouldn't mind knowing what kind of a deal I got

The price could vary a lot, depending on who actually sees it, and who is in the market at the time it goes up for sale. Because it's a 3/4 size pennant, it's value is somewhat limited. Plus the memorabilia market is still pretty soft.

So even with the extreme rarity, it's probably only worth $135 - $165. If you could fix the white strip to lay flat, it could possibly exceed $200 on a very good day. All it would take is for 2 Red Sox Fans to see it and want it (most Red Sox collectors wouldn't have this one). But it's worth closer to $150 in its current state.

Hope this helps,
Mark

Been a tough month...got caught looking at a Pete Rose 4000th hit ticket, Swung and missed big time at a Al Kaline 3000th hit ticket, but got a base hit on a Roy Hamey signed check. Roy was the GM for the 61 Yankees.

Bob Gibson no-hitter and Len Barker Perfect Game tickets

2 Attachment(s)
Two very nice last minute pickups in January:
A pair of ticket stubs to the HOF great Bob Gibson's no-hitter in 1971 and a vintage signed stub to Len Barker's perfect game in 1981. :D

I'm surprised that with all the incredible tools that Bob Gibson brought to the game, that he only managed to throw one no-hitter. It really demonstrates how much luck actually factors into throwing one.

FYI, , I am currently auctioning the 1953 Helms Olympic bread loaf and the 1960 Canada Dry Olympic water, and a 1985 Larry Holmes vs. Michael Spinks boxing pillow on eBay, link above.

[QUOTE=CarltonHendricks;864184]http://sportsantiques.com/fantazdispenser.htm
Mike, I'm not a pin guy but that's a cool pin...I did a story on a Fan Taz syrup dispenser, see link above. At the end of the story is a Fan Taz sign, which has been on eBay a long time.

In other news...here's some Jan P/U's....went to the Glendale Show and the Long Beach flea over the weekend...didn't find much....At Glendale got a dummy advertising loaf of Helms bread, stating Helms supplied bread to the Olympics....after leaving regretted getting it since it's one of those fragile pieces I hate...then the next day at the Long Beach flea I found a bottle of Canada Dry water, again advertising it as supplyed to the Olympics...then found a killer horserace plaque marked 1966....also got a cool little c1930's polo trophy on eBay 7 1/2" wide..given to a U.S. Ambasador
