In 1889 the Cleveland Spiders lost a whopping 101 road games.

101 Road games lost. Wow!

Most times on base, World Series (career): 102.

In his 65 World Series games, Mickey Mantle compiled 59 hits and 43 walks.

As in the NFL draft, I’m trading up a spot to get this one in a bit early.

Do you know who holds the single season record for sacrifice hits?

The record is over 100 years old (104+ to be exact, but greater than 103).

The man who set this record never knew it for he suffered the ultimate sacrifice when he was hit by a pitch in August 1917 and died.

RIP - Ray Chapman

1909 Chicago Cubs 104-49
1942 LA Dodgers 104-50

Most times HBP in a season by a team (modern era): 103

2008 Cleveland Indians- Ryan Garko led the team with 15 HBP.

Wade Boggs claims that he once drank 107 beers on a cross-country US flight, which would totally obliterate the accepted record of 52 by some Australian footballer. Boggs is known for his beer consumption so the story has some basis of truth perhaps. Along with that he may have also set a record for most trips to the john.

In 1885, Cap Anson set the NL record with 108 RBIs. It would only stand for one year...

109-0 is the highest scoring baseball game in high school history.

This is my favorite stat of all time.

Walter Johnson, 110 shutouts

Next highest?
Pete Alexander with 90, followed by Matty with 79

BobbyStrawberry 07-08-2022 10:40 AM

That's a great one!

Derek Jeter's 111 career runs scored in the postseason is the record.

frankbmd 07-08-2022 05:25 PM

Everyone’s favorite player (in the 1880s), Dave Orr, led the league and set the record with [B]112[B] RBIs in a single season in 1884.

frankbmd 07-11-2022 11:57 AM

To revive interest in this fascinating and informative thread I would like to present Ed Williamson.

The year after he led the league with 27 home-runs, he set the record for games played at third base at 113.

While playing third base in 113 games in 1885, he also was credited with exactly 113 putouts at third.

BobbyStrawberry 07-11-2022 12:16 PM

Rudy Kemmler holds the all time major league record for passed balls in a season - 114 in 1883.

This is post #115.

Frank, well done on #113, that was a tough one.

Most HRs in a season, teammates: 115.

Amazing this record still stands after 61 years! In 1961, Maris (61) and Mantle (54) combined for 115 homeruns.

Most wins, regular season.

Two teams have accomplished this feat. The first was the 1906 Chicago Cubs.

In 1922 John McGraw became the first manager to be ejected from 117 games.

Interestingly five years passed before his next ejection in 1927.

In 2004 the current record for intentional base on balls was set by Barry Bonds at 120. This one may never be broken.

William Ellsworth "Dummy" Hoy was a major league outfielder from 1888 to 1902. The first deaf ballplayer, Hoy is credited with starting the practice of umpires signaling safe and out calls.

Hoy set many records during his career and finished with a .288 batting average, 2,048 hits and 121 triples.

Rather than dwell on a tie shared by Ed Konectchy and Derrek, I am going to go with Giancarlo Stanton who tied his record for the fastest ground ball hit at 122.2 MPH recently. The play resulted in a double play unfortunately.

BobbyStrawberry 07-13-2022 05:59 PM

In 1887, Tip O'Neill set the American Association record with 123 RBIs.

chadeast 07-13-2022 06:37 PM

Hoyt Wilhelm won 124 games as a relief pitcher, the most all time.

bn2cardz 07-13-2022 07:09 PM

1998 Yankees won 125 games combined over the regular and postseason .

tedzan 07-13-2022 07:19 PM

Sam Thompson hit 126 HR's (1885 - 1898) I think that is the record for 19th Century ballplayers.

Eddie Murray

Most stolen bases, season, by a player who didn't lead the league.

Yes, that's right. Arlie Latham was credited with 129 steals in 1887. It wasn't good enough to lead the league, though; making him the most prolific bridesmaid in history. He fell nine short of the total put up by Hugh Nicol, a mark that has stood the test of time.

Latham's St. Louis Browns captured the AA Pennant that year, though. They outpaced Nicol's Cincinnati Red Stockings by 14 games.

In the WWI-shortened 1918 season, Charlie Hollocher of the Cubs led MLB as the only player to appear in 131 games–the maximum possible due to the shortened schedule. This would stand as the lowest number of games played to lead MLB until the 1981 strike season.

chadeast 07-14-2022 10:25 AM

On August 14, 2007, Bobby Cox was ejected from a game for the 132nd time, breaking John McGraw's 70 year old record.

Shane McClanahan set a major-league record while pitching seven innings of one-run ball in the Rays' 6-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays during the first game of a Saturday doubleheader. He became the only pitcher in MLB history with 19 earned runs or fewer and at least 133 strikeouts thru 16 starts of a season.

(Whoever takes the next one should have a pretty easy go if they check the 1899 season, lol)

frankbmd 07-14-2022 01:19 PM

I'll Bite

The Cleveland Spiders lost 134 games in 1899. Could be hard to beat, but the Angels will try.

I appreciate the increased understanding of the rules of this thread. It was a little rocky for awhile, but compliance has improved significantly.;)

BobbyStrawberry 07-14-2022 01:31 PM

In 1920, Babe Ruth set the 20th century record for RBIs in a season with 135. It didn't last long–he broke it himself the following year.

tedzan 07-14-2022 09:01 PM

During the 19th century, HOFer Roger Connor hit 136 * Home Runs during his career (1880 - 1897).

* Note some say 136....others say 138.

Continuing with 19th Century numbers......

In 1899, Ed Delahanty drove in 137 runs to lead the National League (NL). Also, he led the NL with a .410 BA and 238 hits.
This was his 12th year in the Major Leagues, and his performance would improve every year as he aged. This is remarkable
as only a few Baseball players have achieved this feat. An example is Babe Ruth, whose performance improved as he aged.

138 - a FAUX record

138 is the record set by Ty Cobb for the most times caught stealing at the conclusion of the 1922 season.

However caught stealing was not an official stat early in his career and his record of 138 includes 11 seasons when he stole bases but was never caught.

He was fleet afoot but not that fast.:D

chadeast 07-14-2022 11:35 PM

On July 18th, 1921, Babe Ruth hit the 139rd home run of his career. This moved Babe Ruth in front of Roger Connor as the all-time MLB home run leader. As mentioned above, Connor's home run total was thought to be 131, then 136, until 138 was figured to be the correct number in the 70s, so no one knew at the time that he had broken the record on this day.

The last time any major leaguer reached the 140 RBI mark was in 2009, when both Prince Fielder and Ryan Howard had 141.

Roy Campanella has the most RBIs in a single season for the Brooklyn Dodgers at 142 in 1953. (The LAD record is Tommy Davis in 1962)

BobbyStrawberry 07-16-2022 08:29 AM

Derek Jeter holds the all time career record for singles hit in the postseason with 143.

BobbyStrawberry 07-17-2022 11:38 AM

I had to piece this one together, but I think it's correct...

Longest time between professional baseball debut and HOF induction - 144 years, shared by Deacon White (1869-2013) and Bud Fowler (1878-2022).

tedzan 07-17-2022 02:35 PM

In his sophomore year (1937 - St Louis Cardinals), Johnny Mize got 204 Hits, resulting in a tremendous .364 BA in 145 games.

Tremendous way to start off a Baseball career....of which he certainly had one. Johnny is one of my all-time favorite ballplayers.
I had the pleasure of visiting Big John at his home in Demorest, GA in 1986.
