1950's Polo Grounds Banner Promoting Giants Pre-Game TV

I got this in auction years ago. It hung in the Polo Grounds Press Box, where the pre-game show was broadcast. The lot included an antique portable microphone with chest harness that was also used in the show.

Here's a mounted 1937 12" x 20" (measured from the middle) insanely rare poster promoting HUSKIES CEREAL to the IGA (Independent Grocers Alliance) and featuring as HUSKIES pitchman, "The Iron Man of Baseball"... LOU GEHRIG!

Also posting an 8" x 10" vintage original TYPE 1 photo that I acquired some 16 years ago from the Christy Walsh Family (Gehrig's Agent) as Lou and a couple of fine lads are getting ready to enjoy a bowl of HUSKIES!

Not sure why the pic is sideways...sorry, maybe someone else knows how to edit/fix it for you all...

That Spalding sign is absolutely fantastic!! Love it!!!!

Love that Giants banner. I always thought they were on WOR-TV, not PIX.

also had that type Spalding sign that I sold to Bushings 20 years ago. Found it in an auto repair shop as it was covering a hole in the loft floor which I could see from the ground. Said I could have it if I filled in the space with something else

Great sign! It's about 1900 to 1905. Great overall display too - would love to see more.

Wow! These signs are unbelievable.

I especially like the recent Spalding and Gehrig. I'm sure that Giants piece will be a favorite as well.

Clint... do you have that displayed somewhere? That thing looks huge!

ksfarmboy 07-11-2017 04:01 PM

Mark, I don't have it up yet but am going to do it very soon. You have some amazing Oriole signs. I'll also agree that the Spalding signs are incredible.

I'm not sure this really fits as an advertising sign, but I'll post it anyway. If it doesn't fit just scroll past it really fast...

The Earl photo was in one of the Ezrine Auto Centers in 1978. I have a couple of these with different players pictured and the photos were basically just glued to a wooded type frame with a plaque attached. Most have come off of the frame, but if I ever display I'll glue 'em back on.

Mike,

Thanks! I try to have fun with each project. Just like everyone else on this thread, I like advertising with a baseball tie-in. Unfortunately, with the old ads, it is getting harder and harder to get a picture signed (in person).

I always have wondered if this sign might be a reproduction. It was purchased at a show in 2009 and repo or not, I liked it and it was too cheap to pass up.

There is another one currently for sale on ebay, which looks to be in much better condition.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/162532461952?rmvSB=true

Any thoughts on being a reproduction are welcome.

Thanks for the compliments, Joe, I guess?? Anyway, I love the sign...don't know much about it, figured it was around TOC...just has killer eye appeal to me and certainly makes the display with all the early Spalding gloves/equipment around it. That's actually a pic from last year, I've added a few more nice items to the display. I'd gladly post a few more pics of the display, sign and other displays I have...however I'm pretty sure all the pics would end up sideways like the first one, and maybe it's not the proper thread to post collection pics, as again it's my only advertising sign in the collection. Don't want to upset anyone here, which seems easy to do at times;) Anyone is welcome to contact me about my collection, always love to chat with fellow collectors...email me and I'll forward some pictures for you;)

Hey Mike, I bought it around 2010 from an elderly couple that pick in the county, and sell at an antique mall. I specifically asked about its provenance and was told that it was found just the day before I purchased it, hanging in an old barn. I've looked, but have never seen another. It was manufactured in St Thomas Ontario, and judging from the 15cent purchase price, I would guess it probably originates from early in the run of Chicago Cubs tobacco products issued by Rock City Tobacco in 1936. I also have a matching cardboard counter box that once held the plugs the sign advertises.

It sure would of been. We can only speculate, but that sure would have been an interesting group of characters. Here's another from around the same time frame (late 70's I guess); he's not incliuded in this one. Unsure if this one is just an Orioles piece; I don't see it advertising anything except being a birdwatcher.
