Most people dislike what they don't or can't have. The 1952 set is pretty much unattainable for most, unlike other popular sets.

I have the 52 set. It is not my favorite, or even my favorite of the 50s, and agree it’s an expensive set if you are starting it today. . But it is not only an iconic set now, it beat the heck out of Bowman in the market in 1952

irv 07-29-2021 10:58 PM

The 52 Topps set is the most iconic set ever produced with one of the most sought after iconic cards ever produced.
To each their own, and of course I'm biased, but I think a lot of people forget the importance this set and the cards within brought to the hobby back in 52.

"Considered by many hobbyists to be one of the most important releases in baseball history, the 1952 Topps Baseball Card Set is the pinnacle of post-war collectibles"

"With its iconic design and deep checklist of some of the game's all-time greats, 1952 Topps Baseball cards have come to define not just an era of collecting but a simpler time in American history. Transcending sports, many of the players depicted in the set became true icons of pop culture during the 1950s"

"The Elements that Make the 1952 Topps Baseball Card Set the Most Iconic of the Postwar Age"

https://www.psacard.com/articles/art...ic-postwar-age

"1952 was one of the best years for baseball card collectors. After Topps Gum released their first official modern set, baseball fans went crazy for these cards"

"The 1952 Topps baseball card set was the biggest card set after the war at that time. With 407 cards in the set, it was considered (and still is) the first modern card set that featured all the big baseball stars of that time"

Was about to say the same thing. The contempt and teeth-gritting over the '52 T elsewhere lately (especially Mick) has been palpable.

My Houk. I'm curious when did Topps start using cards 100, 200, etc primarily for stars? I can go look through the sets, but if anyone knows the answer, feel free to save me some time.

Final bid was $38,747 so $46,496 with the bp and then possibly sales tax. The Mantle was an SGC 1.5 with bad centering T/B (and miscut on the back), and the Robinson was ungraded with a stain, but still seems like a low price in the current market. Maybe things are finally starting to cool down.
