Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of Cal Ripken Jr. hitting his only three Home Run game of his career....Ironically his third HR was a Grand Slam and tied Eddie Murray for the most career Orioles homers (333)...Also brother Bill homered in this game as well, marking the 2nd (and last) time that they homered in the same game:

Brooks Robinson PSA Master Set - 1978
1 Attachment(s)
Good evening! This week is Brooks' final year in the PSA Master. In 1978 he had 5 cards. This was one of the smaller years featured on a card or item in the Master. First off, you will see the PSA 9 TCMA Stars of the 1960s. This card has 7 peers and 3 graded at the PSA 10 level. This set has 293 cards featuring photos from Mike Aronstein's library of photos. I enjoy the photos from this set and is full of HoF'ers. Next, is the 1978 Orioles Topps Team Card. This PSA 9 is fairly common with 62 peers and 25 graded as PSA 10. The Topps Team Checklist Sheet Hand Cut is tied highest graded with 1 peer. This card is hard to find at this condition. The 1978 Topps Record Breaker Brooks issue is a PSA 10 GEM, which was fairly pricy and very difficult to find for me despite having 14 peers. The 1978 O Pee Chee PSA 9 has 24 peers and one PSA 10. The 1978 Topps Record Breaker card is one of several players featured achieving a significant event in their career. The 1977 campaign for Brooks was his 23d season in uniform with the Orioles establishing a record of longevity with one ballclub. Sadly, this will be my last week featuring a year in the Brooks Master. It was a lot of fun writing for the past 6 months about the PSA Master featuring Brooks His cards are plentiful with many exceptions, especially the lower population cards. I am very partial to the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s and having Brooks in the middle of those years both with Topps and all the oddball cards is very exciting. Several weeks ago, I actually completed the Brooks PSA Master set. The last card needed was the 1975 NST Mr. Baseball Japan Card/Sticker from the Nagashima set featuring Brooks in uniform. The PSA Master Set for Brooks has 272 total items. I did some research on other popular HOF players from that era such as Yaz, Mays, Clemente, Mantle, Aaron, Gibson and others and was surprised to learn that none of them were complete. Many were short a few cards, but again, incomplete. My set has a qualitative score of 7.05. It is ranked number 2 (sad face). The number 1 Brooks set is 96% complete with a qualitative score of 8.07. The difference between my #2 set and the #1 set in terms of grades is significantly different. For example, if I own a card that has a mid value or weight graded as a PSA 5 and find a PSA 10, it will only increase my score by .002. I would likely take me tens of thousands of dollars and 100 increased graded cards to overtake the #1 set. My set has a lot of items that are #1 / highest population (16) and 69 tied for highest grade / population. Within my set there are a number of items that no one else has. I have 6 items at PSA waiting to be added to the Master and another 10 or so at PSA being graded that I hope to add, too. Once PSA opens, I have a handful of items to send for grading and addition (i.e., 1968 Brooks/Franke OPC Champs #1, 1964 Martin Marietta Family Night, 1974 OPC Orioles Team Card and a few 1967/68 Coca Cola / Fanta / Tab / Sprite Soda Caps. Sadly, as you add items with my score, your qualitative score decreases unless you are adding PSA 7 - 10s. Needless to say, my OCD and endless quest to slay new or improved graded Brooks cards is fun while exhausting. The Brooks collection keeps me in the hobby and allows me to meet many people to include as many as 10 folks on this string. Anyway, I hope the weekly posts have been educational and enjoyable. For those of you that do not like PSA, my apologies but hope I have clarified a few things along the way. I will pop in frequently with Brooks items so see you soon. Happy Collecting.

Thanks for posting your cards Charlie and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. Will you be posting the other cards you’ve acquired such as the 1968 OPC and the Martin family night cards once they are graded? Would like to see them.

Thanks for sharing the variations, Alan. I will keep an eye on those. I was aware of some but not all. Love the publicity photo sheets. Never see those.
Mark, I will keep everyone posted on the Brooks Master Additions. Appreciate everyone’s comments. |
Cool Brooks return today. I coach 4/5 year old coach pitched little league and there is a kid Lucas who is a great 3rd basemen (at age 4). Anyways he’s fearless can throw across the smaller field etc. Anyways I always tell his dad he’s a mini Brooks Robinson. Decided to send this out and Brooks didn’t disappoint. We have a game tonight and last one is Friday so just in time. Excited to give this to him. Hopefully he appreciates it when he gets older.

Back in post 691 (June 1, '20) Alan posted about the 1985 Daytona Beach Islanders which was an Orioles Class A club in the Florida State League which had a Co-Op arrangement with the Texas Rangers (managed by former Oriole Jim Hutto).

Brooks Robinson Pick Ups - 1968 All Star Action Sticker and Post Cereal Complete Box
2 Attachment(s)
Good morning. I picked these two items up recently. I posted these on a couple of FB pages so apologies if you saw them. The 1962 Post Cereal Box is darn near perfect. This box featuring Brooks was never assembled. The surface, corners and color is amazing. I looked at it for about a month and knew I had to have it. I would love to assemble the box for display. Any thoughts? No worries, I will leave "as is." The 1968 Topps All Star Brooks with his pal Roberto is also pretty nice. The complete sticker is not as rare as the complete box but something I have wanted for a long time. I have the Brooks single panel with McDowell and Perez graded but the complete sticker sheet eluded me.

Question about 62 Box
A odd ball card dealer showed it to me at Chantilly and then I met him at the Philly show to purchase. I help him with his mortgage, light bill, alimony, etc. routinely. He has the things no one else has.

Great box and I’d be showing that on every site I belonged to including a genealogy site if I belonged to one. Are the stickers perforated? Never owned one of them.

Charlie,
VERY NICE items you picked up. I still don’t have a complete AS Panel and of course the cereal box is unused so that’s an excellent find. |

1975 Japan NST Mr Baseball JMC 1 Nagashima #59 and #62
For Sale or Trade: I have 2 extra 1975 Japan NST cards of Brooks required for the PSA Master. The one in civilian clothes (#59) has a population of 7. The one in uniform (#62) has a population of 5. These are very hard to find. If interested, I would sell them both at a reduced cost. I had 4 (2 each) graded and paid a good amount for each. I worked really hard to find these and once I found one the others popped up…one all the way from Japan. Email me if interested in a sale or trade:

The Orioles last published a media guide in 2018 (due to printing/shipping costs as they got bigger & bigger, information being available on-line, etc.).
My collection/reference library included the majority of their guides and I was sad to see them go, mainly because I enjoy referring to them. A friend of mine who works for the Orioles knew this and for my birthday, he specially printed up guides (the information is on a stick) from 2019-2021 to keep me current: https://i.imgur.com/4bkHFCW.jpg |
Quote:
Well that’s very nice of your friend. Look well presented. I can’t believe they are going away from all the tickets and guides. |

I can't tell you how jealous I am. I have every Orioles media guide from 1954-2018. I also have many of the season summary guides, especially nice run from the 60's. I'm with you. Very sad to see printed publications coming to an end. First it was media guides, then yearbooks and now programs. I talk to a lot of people at spring training that really miss the media guides. I can understand the cost argument, but it seems that the majority of the work is putting it together. If the info is on a stick, I for one would gladly pre-order a copy and pay extra based upon the number of orders. I've tried printing my own copies, but haven't had much luck with formatting on my personal computer. What size are they? Congrats Bill. Put me first on the list if you ever decide to part with them. :D |
One more off the list

On a happy note. I just picked up another program off my list in the attempt to find programs from all the Orioles minor league affiliates 1954-present. I mentioned before how tough it is to find Stockton Ports memorabilia.
Received this nice 1970 Stockton Ports program today. While the 1969 Ports won the league championship with an 81-59 record, the 1970 team did a complete reverse finishing 54-86. The Ports averaged less than 500 fans per game their last three years as an O's affiliate. The list of future Orioles included Enos Cabell, Don Hood, Jesse Jefferson, David Johnson (1975 Pitcher), and Tim Nordbrook. 1970 Stockton Ports program Attachment 468400 For those interested Here's what I have left on my minor league program want list. Most of these are near impossible to find. I know there was no All Star Game last season but since the game returns tonight, please indulge me to repost something that I originally posted over a year ago (# 1452) since some may have missed it (particularly since it's the 20th anniversary of Cal Jr. winning his 2nd ASG MVP Award). Charly Steiner of ESPN did the Play by Play of the '01 game on radio and had a memorable call from when CRJ homered "Did He Do It?...Did He Do It?...He Did!" You hear that sound clip often around All Star Game time... Anyways in 2005, I had the idea that I'd like to get Steiner to sign an Official '01 ASG Ball with that very inscription. At that point, he was doing radio with the Yankees and I had an Orioles contact get me in the Radio Press Box pregame one Sunday afternoon with the hopes of getting him to sign my ball. When I approached him he couldn't have been nicer and was thrilled that I wanted to include him as part of my collection (even Cal thought it was an unique piece to sign): https://i.imgur.com/6mDR0Ds.jpg |

That helmet is Amazing! Thanks for sharing it with us. |
I have this half-decent 1971 Topps Brooks Robinson. It's a great card, love the 71s and love Brooksie as any sane vintage collector should. Anyway, curious about the inner-framing of this card, the part that holds the photograph itself. Notice how the white border is o/c to the left and the right border has some color leak?
https://i.imgur.com/8udCqtt.jpg So I was curious if this was a card issue or something else and I went and checked other 71 BRs and the best ones don't have this issue. And then I looked at the font of his name and realized my card has poor registration. Oh well. Still an awesome card lol! |
Quote:
Think a lot of cards back in the day, including the 71’s, have registration issues. Some of the colors just didn’t align properly. Your card looks great IMO. Love the Brooksie ‘71 card! |
I am a Pirates fan at heart but always had a thing for those classic O’s including Brooks. Had this signed at a card show some years back and enjoyed chatting with him for a while

Latest O’s pickups
1 Attachment(s)
So here’s a pic of my latest orioles pickups and my nokona w2 catchers mask. I used to have as a kid the black white and orange hat it had the leather band and a elastic back I wore it so much till one day I went to take it off and all I came away with was the brim as the threads had deteriorated due to sweat rain humidity. I found an exact replacement that fits 😂 the other hats are a Roman pro fitted and the orioles triple A club Rochester's pillbox hat . I’d love to find a game worn hat from the 70s I wouldn’t care who wore it as long as it fit!

In regard to the Orioles what all do you collect? |

Future orioles farm team and HOF Rabbit Maranville
3 Attachment(s)
Found this today . I know it’s not orioles but the Rochester ball team will be their future farm club . This 1927 scorecard has hall of famer Rabbit Maranville listed and the front of the card talks about the future silver stadium . Pretty neat piece of baseball and local history. Also note the schedule Rochester plays Baltimore several times .

I'm looking for some thoughts and/or opinions on a early 1954 Orioles spring training program currently on eBay. The program is being sold by a reputable seller and at first glance can be very confusing. The seller admitted to not knowing much about it. Orioles programs being my thing, I offered him some help. Here's the auction title, along with the info I provided and a couple pics of the program.
orig., possible 1953/1954 BALTIMORE ORIOLES BASEBALL TEAM 1st ever GAME PROGRAM I have some information for you about the program. This is definitely not the Orioles 1st program after their move from St. Louis to Baltimore in 1954. However, I do believe the program is from 1954. The Orioles spring training site in 1954 was Yuma, AZ. After completing their schedule in Arizona, the Orioles and Cubs played 10 games from March 27 - April 7, across the south, starting in Albuquerque, NM and ending in New Orleans. The Orioles finished their spring training in St. Louis against the Cardinals on April 10-11. I believe your program is from April 4, when the Orioles and Cubs played in Mobile, AL. It was fairly common for teams to use their regular season programs for these exhibition games and either insert a roster sheet or glue rosters into the program itself. Some teams were also known to reuse previous years programs. The Bluefield Orioles often put a sticker with the new year over the old year. I’m guessing Mobile either reused some old 1953 programs or hadn’t received the new 1954 programs, before April 4, and glued the rosters into the old programs. I've attached a pics of the Orioles March 29-30,1954 spring training program from Dallas, TX and the April 10-11 program from St. Louis. Hope this helps. Attachment 471884 Attachment 471885 I was hoping the seller would update the listing to give buyers a better understanding, that while an early O's program, it's definitely not the first one. The seller did take a small piece of the info and updated the description in the listing, but in my opinion, still left it open to buyers thinking the program might be something it isn't. The seller isn't lying, just leaving some things for the buyer to guess at. Should I be disappointed in the lack of full disclosure or chalk it up to a seller trying to create as much interest as possible in an item? Full disclosure - I'm interested in the program, because I love all programs related to the Orioles history and it is an early spring training program. Here are the two 1954 Orioles spring training programs I referenced, from Dallas and st. Louis Attachment 471888 Attachment 471889 Here's an example of a 1974 Bluefield Orioles program being reused in 1975, with a sticker over the year. Attachment 471886 Attachment 471887 |
Brooks proof or something...
2 Attachment(s)
Alright, Brooks fans. Here is a mystery card. I have already asked a few of you and did not get a resounding answer so hoping one of you can tell me what this is. On one side, there is a handwritten "Brooks Robinson" on it, suronded by a beveled lines around it. Then there is some stamped numbering with a made in USA stamped marking. On the other side you barely see Brooks picture. The picure is really hard to see with the naked eye...you can see much better with the iphone pic. The picture side is surrounded by raised marking and some numbers. I do not think it is a proof of any of his cards, but who knows. Please take a look below:

Orioles Yearbooks and Programs
Hello fellow Orioles Fans! I recently purchased a large lot of Orioles yearbooks and programs from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. If anyone is looking for anything in particular, please let me know through PM.
Thanks! Rich |
A fellow Ripken collector who attended the most recent National saw a dealer there from Charlotte and inquired if he had items related to Cal's time there.
The dealer reached down from under his table and pulled out a few things with the most unique thing being a 16x24 team photo board in which a fan back in 1980 took pictures of the team members, then had them sign them and affixed them to this board. Fortunately the collector thought the item fit better in my collection and a deal was made: https://i.imgur.com/qOVu9DP.jpghttps://i.imgur.com/Tu0I9CJ.jpg |
