Baltimore Orioles License Plates
1 Attachment(s)
Day 85 – 26 March 2024
I really enjoy the Oriole license plates. Today, I am showing you some from the 1954 season (top), 1966 WS Champs and I think the black block letter version is from the 1950s/60s. The top two are 12 inches long while the smaller black one is about 6 inches or so. These make great displays, are not easy to find and can be pricey. I am always looking for the orange thinner “It can be done in 61” license plate. I know of two out there but can’t convince them it would look better on my wall than theirs. Ha! Is anyone aware of a license plate for 1969, 1970 or 1971 WS? I will show other plates tomorrow. |

Day 86 – 27 March 2024
As a continuation of yesterday, here are some license plates from recent years. The top one I like because it is still in the original packing material. This one is about 6 inches long and I think from the 1980s or 1990s. The middle one is a favorite celebrating our 1983 WS championship. It is 12 inches long. The bottom one I think is from the 1990s or so and measures 12 inches. Has anyone seen a plate for 1979 WS? |
I really like the plates although I have none. The 54 and 83 are my favorites.

Yep…that is the one, Mark. License plate envy, for sure. Thanks for sharing.

Clint, I like the 54 and 83, too. The 54 is made like the old cars…solid!

Mike Cuellar 1972 Esso Oil Latin American Foundry Example
1 Attachment(s)
Day 87 – 28 March 2024
One of my favorite Oriole pitchers from the 1970s was Mike Cuellar. I often think him and McNally don’t get enough respect outside of us old timers that remember their greatness firsthand. Brooks annd Cuellar did a lot of damage together over the years to AL teams…post season, too. Anyway, today I am showing you a very unique piece from 1972 made of solid brass and weighs 2.6 pounds and measures 8 inches. It is about a quarter inch thick. This is a foundry template for a 1972 Esso Oil Latin American player coin. I believe 7 latin players (Oliva, Marichal, Aparicio, Cedeno, Cuellar, Millan, Montanez). The players were celebrated with a coin handed out at the Esso Gas Stations in Puerto Rico. I was lucky to find this one, which I mounted on an orange circular board. Surprised to see Clemente was not part of this grouping. When I received my Cuellar, it was pretty raw but after some time with some “cleaners” I got it to shine. I am also showing you the actual coin graded in a PSA slab. I really enjoy the “Miguel” Cuellar version. |

I think Tony Perez was in the set too.

Day 88 – 29 March 2024
Today I am showing you my 1971 Brooks Robinson Salesman Sample with pants along with some other items I will address over the next few days. I was lucky to find the Salesman Sample recently and am very happy with it. It is a Rawlings double knit, size 44. I believe it was for the 1971 WS and with the same collection is a uniform for Rennie Stennett from the Pirates. The jersey has a flat cut tail with B. Robinson on the back along with #5. The first initial was due to Frank Robinson being on the team but not for long as he was traded after the 1971 season. This would be the first year for the Orioles wearing a knit uniform. The pants have a zipper fly with pockets in the back. They are pretty small. |
Great display Charles, everything looks fantastic!
|
Thank you, Clint!

Day 89 – 30 March 2024
Along with the Salesman Sample, you will see a custom made helmet I had made with the bill shaved down and the old Bird. I was fortunate to find this and later had Brooks sign the top of the bill along the orange. It looks nice displayed. I would love to find an original. |

Day 90 – 31 March 2024
Also displayed with the Salesman Sample and fake helmet, is a Game Used signed Brooks Robinson Hillerich & Bradsby model MC44 bat, length 34.5 inches, weight 32.3 ounces made of ash with a standard finish. The bat was used between 1965 – 1968. It has a lot of use / character. The bat is cracked. The handle has been wrapped with a cork grip. The number 5 is on the knob with 32 for the weight. Brooks signed it in blue and marked it “HOF 1983 Game Used.” Both the signature and bat authenticity were done by PSA. It Graded a PSA GU 8. |
Brooks Robinson Endorsed Items

Day 91 – 1 April 2024
I really enjoy odd stuff that Brooks endorsed. Today, I am showing you two items. A Palmgard Protective Fielder’s Glove for baseball or softball. It was made in Randallstown, MD. The glove has some type of special gripping material on the index finger and palm. It is size XL. Brooks signed it with his HoF 83 inscription. The backside of the box provides more details. Additionally, I am showing a Markwort Sporting Goods Company, St. LoPine Tar Rag. The Pine Tar Rag has some type of relationship with the Palmgard Glove. I did not have this one signed. Both items were endorsed by Brooksie so they must work. Should I break them open and try them out? |
I think George Brett would have been a better spokesperson for the pine tar rag. It’s unbelievable that a “special” rag was marketed for applying pine tar. There is no way my old man would have bought that for me back when I was young and playing baseball!

I agree with both Mark and Scott. I enjoy seeing this stuff my parents would have laughed at me.

Was pleased to pick up this Cal Ripken Sr. game worn road jersey from the 1985 season this past weekend. 1985 was the first year Sr. went to #7 (was originally #47) and jersey is complete with the cigarette pack breast pocket customization:

Day 92 – 2 April 2024
Like yesterday, another item endorsed by Brooks was a line of products from Ajay Sports (Delavan, Wisconsin). I believe there are other items but I only have the two items shown. The baseball lacing needle was used for replacing the leather material on a glove. You would use the needle to help with replacing the lacing. You can see Brooks facsimile signature at the top. Also shown is a softball scorebook for 52 games along with instructions. Again, you see Brooks’ signature at the top. Does anyone else have other Ajay Sports items? |

Day 93 – 3 April 2024
A couple weeks ago I showed you the Baltimore News Post newspaper cards and failed to show the 1970 Dayton Daily News Brooks Robinson Hand Cut bubble gumless card. This example is #154 in the set of over 320 or so cards. The set includes different sports. I am tracking about 206 baseball cards in the set and many have 2 variations with differences on their playing statistics (some are from 1969 and others are from 1970). Technically, this set is from 1970 and 1971. I started this set but don’t plan to finish it as the cards are just do darn hard to find and can be pricey. I have quite a few HoF’ers though (Aaron, Mays, Rose, and Brock). I believe there are as many as 13 Orioles in the set including the stars from the late 1960s and early 1970s (Palmer, Cuellar, Frank, Boog and others to include Brooks). I have Brooks, Davey Johnson and Cuellar on hand. I have a checklist but it is not formal. The Brooks copy is not in the best shape but it rare and 1/1 graded. I was fortunate to add this to the PSA Master Set. I have never seen another but there are others out there. You can see the Brooks card is from 1970 given his 1969 stats are provided. |

Charlie,
I love this set. You are correct, it is a very difficult set to find. Even the common players. I've been working on my Orioles set for nearly 40 years. I'm missing four from 1970 and one from 1971. I've personally found the lower numbers show up more than the higher numbers. Unfortunately, many O's are in the 150 number range. There are 13 Orioles in the 1970 set and 2 Orioles in the 1971 set. 1970 - 5 Frank Robinson, 34 Boog Powell, 52 Dave McNally, 56 Mike Cuellar, 82 Jim Palmer, 107 Davey Johnson, 143 Merv Rettenmund, 151 Don Buford, 154 Brooks Robinson, 157 Paul Blair, 158 Andy Etchebarren, 159 Mark Belanger and 160 Elrod Hendricks 1971 - 5 Frank Robinson and 34 Boog Powell 1970 Dayton Daily News Attachment 616860 Attachment 616861 Attachment 616862 1971 Dayton Daily News Attachment 616863 |

Day 94 - 4 April 2024
Anyway need a match? I know these have been discussed before but I really enjoy the 1970 Oriole Matchbook set. I have displayed the 24 different players. Obviously, my favorite is Brooks but I really enjoy the other stars (Palmer, McNally, Powell, Frank, Cuellar, Blair and Belanger). This was a tough set to complete. I worked pretty hard on this set and over a year or so, completed it. Along the way, I picked up some extras. I am always looking for nicer copies. On the inside of the “book” there is a schedule for the Orioles home games. I always wondered about the phone number (301-243-9800)…was that for a smokey bar or to get your tickets? I hated to flatten the Brooks and add it to my PSA Master Set but did it (sorry). The book was not in the best shape so please forgive me. I thought it would grade higher but it came back as a PSA 2.5. I am sure I could top that but can’t bring myself to ruining another matchbook. Day 95 – 5 April 2024 |
Alan, nice looking collection of the Orioles DND cards. I have not found any for a few months. Added Mays and Aaron a few months ago and can’t seem to find any others. Love the Frank.

Ted Patterson Orioles Scrapbook
2 Attachment(s)
Day 95 – 5 April 2024
Recently, I found a scrapbook from the late Ted Patterson who was a newscaster, sportscaster and host of various talk shows. He served with the Orioles as a broadcaster in the early 1980s. Ted was also a writer (he published the Baltimore Orioles – 40 years of Magic from 33 Street to Camden Yards). He had a huge sports memorabilia collection. Apparently, he was very aggressive in his collection activities…I heard a few stories how he would approach the players for autographs that was not well received). He died in 2021 and upon his death, a friend told me his estate included truckloads of items that were removed from his home and spread across the Maryland area and probably nationally. I will share some of the items in the scrapbook over the next few days. I would like to start with a few Brooks Robinson items. The most impressive item or at least to me is a look pamphlet titled “To Tomorrow’s Oriole.” The pamphlet is for new Oriole players. Brooks opens with wecoming comments and the tells the new players what to expect, how to handle yourself, your preparation, work ethic and other advice. The pamphlet is signed. Can’t discern the year but imagine it is from the mid-1960s. It measures 7.25 x 4 inches. It is on a thicker card stock and has 12 pages. Has anyone seen this before? You could take this same advice and apply it today with our Orioles or in your own day to day life. |

Day 96 – 6 April 2024
In the Ted Patterson. scrapbook were a number of team issued postcards and other postcards. Many of the post cards I have seen before while others I have not seen. A few pictures are provided. You’ll notice some of the post cards were written to “Ted.” |
I was friends with Ted over the last 10-12 years or so of his life and was fortunate to see his collection in person on more than one occasion.....I really don't know where to begin as to how impressive it was.....

Day 97 – 7 April 2024
In the Patterson scrapbook I found a few interesting photographs of Brooks. The 5 x 7 inch photo featuring Brooks, Frank, Boog (with signature) along with Aparicio (with signature). I am not sure who #55 (assuming a coach) is but guess someone here will know. The team photo along the 3d base shows the Orioles and I believe this is 1969 World Series (some details are on the back but it has a bit of glue on it; not wanting to remove it. Here is a picture of Brooks at bat (on the back, it says Daryl Norenberg, Pomona, CA). Another picture shows Brooks at a podium assuming he is receiving an award…his smile! Some pretty cool photos. |
Podium guy seems to be Curt Gowdy.
|
Charlie
You may be able to read the name off of #55 Jersey with a magnifying glass on the 1969 WS photo. |
#55 would be Billy Hunter.

Thanks, Bill. Bad memory and got lazy.

Baltimore Orioles Ted Patterson Scrap Book

Day 98 – 8 April 2024
One of my best finds in the Ted Patterson scrap book is a 5 x 7 inch Team Issued 1971/75 photo. You can tell this by the type, placing of his name, signature, size and Tadder as the photographer. I have been looking for this photo for years. It has some damage on the back but am happy to have found it. I am still looking for the larger 6 x 9 inch Team Issued photo from the same years. |

Day 99 – 9 April 2024
In the scrapbook is other miscellaneous items. The top paper addresses less fortunate kids who need donations for transportation to the game and tickets. It was a non-profit (Baltimore Jaycees). Not sure about the one below with the young lad in a wheelchair. The other paper talks about the Orioles belonging to the citizens of Maryland along with their schedule. It is a tri-fold. The next item is a list of Oriole moments and personalities to be voted on. It must be from 1975, as it provides information from 1954 – 1975. It is affixed to the page but with some work, I could pull out. The color photo I have on a jersey night cardboard advertisement; I believe this is 21 July 1983 prior to Brooks going into the HoF. |
https://i.imgur.com/Tz18Bck.jpg
I know I've posted this AP press photo of Brooks previously that was taken prior to the last home game of the '76 season, when there was speculation that it may indeed be the the last game home of his career. The reason for the re-post was that a good friend of mine, Bill Stetka who was a long time sportswriter, official scorer and Orioles PR person (and now the team historian) recently shared with me a neat story about this game. In '76, he was in college and his father's business had Orioles season tickets right behind the visiting team dugout and once it got to be late in the season (and no one wanted to go), he would often go with some buddies. They were playing the Brewers that night & late in the game when it was Brooks last AB, Bill could hear 1st baseman George Scott whistle at the pitcher a couple times and nodded to him as Brooks approached the plate (less than 9,000 fans in the stands). The pitcher then appeared to groove a pitch to Brooks, who hit the ball to center for a single....Brooks was then replaced by a pinch runner as he tipped his helmet to the remaining fans who were giving him a standing ovation. Anyway, years go by and one day Bill sees George at Camden Yards (he was then a scout for the Red Sox) and decided to approach him...Knowing that George was not a fan of sportswriters, Bill told him that he had a quick question for him that wasn't for publication, but simply for his own information. He recounted the 1976 story to George and asked him if he indeed had asked the pitcher to groove the pitch to Brooks, George then shook his head and said "it never happened..." As George was walking away, he turned around and then gave Bill a wink... |
Charlie… Quite a bit of unique items in the scrapbook. How large was the thing?
Bill… thanks so much for sharing the story. Really like to hear the behind the scenes goings on. |
Nice story above. Sad when our sports hero age. It happens to the best of us in our own careers. Mine was as a Soldier. Brooks did it with grace and good for the pitcher!!!
Scrapbook is pretty big but lots of empty pages and some items were picked over. I will ship to you for your SI poster or license plate from 1961. 😎😎 |

Day 100 – 10 April 2024
Wow…day 100. How did Mark Comer do it. Posting here daily is a bit of work. Today, I am including more photos of Brooks Robinson from the scrapbook. These photos seem to be around the time of his retirement. The top left invite is for a reception on 18 September 1977 at the Hollyday Room Village of Cross Keys. Beside it is a team issued photo, which I have seen before but smaller. The photo below it is of Brooks diving. I believe the next photo is Thanks Brooks Day (on the back, it says the attendance was 51,798…largest ever!). Below it, is a photo from Carl Yaztrmski giving him a gift on his retirement; photo has signatures, which is very nice. |

Day 101 – 11 April 2024
Today, more items from the scrapbook. Here is a 1979 ALCS Press Pass (blue) for Ted Patterson from WMAR TV booth 1. The green Press Pass is for the 1979 WS for Ted. I really like the 1979 AL Champion Christmas Card. Ted must have had a 1979 media hospitality invite for games 1 and 2, too. Additionally, I am showing a WMAR Channel 13 Magicard and the 1979 Spring Training Schedule. I am also showing the actual scrapbook. The scrap book has many other items but best I stop boring you. The other items include vintage Oriole baseball cards, team issued photos, Manny Baseball Photos, Exhibit cards and other miscellaneous items. |
After Jackson Holliday was called up yesterday it did create quite the stir that it was then soon announced that he would wear #7 and that the Holliday family had reached out to Cal Ripken Jr. for permission, because that number hadn't been issued since Cal Sr. last wore it in 1992.
Reports also mentioned that the last Orioles player to wear # 7 was Bill Ripken who took it after Sr. was fired after only six games into the 1988 season (when Sr. was re-hired as a coach in '89 he re-claimed it). Kind of a along story, but a friend of mine who was part of the media took me into the Orioles locker room after the last home game of the '88 season (they had just lost their 104th game) and were packing for Toronto for the final weekend of that nightmare season. I approached Bill after he dressed and asked him if I could have the "Ripken 7" nameplate above his locker (Cal Jr. had already given me his) and he pulled it off and just handed it to me. He then added "Hold it, I've got something else for you" and dug deep into the bottom of his locker and handed me the mangled "B. Ripken 3" nameplate that had been there since April. Needless to say I was very grateful to my media buddy as well as to the Ripken Brothers for their generosity that fall night...... https://i.imgur.com/jn9UmHA.jpeg |
Bill, please have a yard sale and let some of those locker room name tags go. I have a nice wall of them decorated but none are older than 2004. Brooks, Cal, Palmer, or some of the other common older ones would suffice. Thanks for sharing these above.

Day 102 – 12 April 2024
I thought I would show some Baltimore Related Stickers for a “few” days. I am constantly scanning ebay and the shows for stickers. If anyone has any that they do not see over the new “few” days and want to trade, donate or sell, keep me in mind. Funny…I am constantly buying ones I already have. At the end of the “sticker” session here, you’ll understand how that is possible. I will start with a few in a large “holder.” This assortment includes ones from the 1980s – early 2000s. I especially like the yellow one (Os Magic, Channel 2), the 1983 World Champions, and “Were for the Birds.” On the next sheet, I like the “Sign Cal” and the Decker Bird from the 1960s. |

Today’s stickers include more from 1950s, 1970s, 1980s through 2000s. I like the Channel 13 Miller High Life “Its 2 Million Time.” The Baltimore Sun Bird sticker is cool, too. I enjoy the Hartzell Bird Decal from the mid-1950s. The next sheet probably has some duplicates, but on this sheet I like the “Tonight, Let it be LowenTime.” The small bird at the bottom from the 1950s is nice, too. I really like the 1970 WS sticker on the top right. |

Day 104 – 14 April 2024 Today’s sheet is full of more of the same. Stickers from the 1970s through 2000s. I like the bright stickers so on this sheet I am partial to the “Baltimore Knows Boh.” The sticker reflecting Baltimore’s frustration with Peters is fun (“I am Petered Out!”). I also like the HoF Ripken/Gwynn sticker. On the next sheet, you see a couple old Decals from the 1950s at the bottom left. The top right “Looking Great in 1978” is a cool one. |

Day 105 – 15 April 2024
Ok…we will move on to some individual stickers. My favorite sticker is on this framed group celebrating an award for Jim Gentile from the Maryland Drycleaning Guild. The group of stickers come from a banquet for Drycleaners in September 1960. Brooks Robinson is featured with 1960 RoY Hansen, Gentile, and Triandos. I tried to remove the sticker but it would get damaged. I have never seen another. I wrote about this a couple years ago. Anyway, the sticker came along with a nice photo of Gentile in a leather bound binder for the banquet for the attendees. |

Day 106 – 16 April 2024
Today’s sticker is from 1974 celebrating the Orioles attendance goals. I liked this sticker so much I had it framed and it turned out very nice. It appears they fell short with an attendance of 962,620. Out of the 24 teams in the MLB in 1974, they were ranked at the bottom with 5 other teams having fewer attendees. The bright orange with the bird and black letters really pop. Hard to believe this sticker is over 50 years old. |

1968 Topps Action All Star Sticker - Brooks Robinson
1 Attachment(s)
Day 108 – 18 April 2024
My next sticker is a bit different. The 1968 Topps All Star Action All Star Sticker full panel with Brooks Robinson and Roberto Clemente. The full panel is not easy to come by and can be a little expensive given Clemente and Brooks are on it. This panel is a test issue. There were 16 three part die cut sticker panels. Other big stars include Mantle, Mays, F. Robinson, Aaron and Yaz. In 1968 you would find these regionally in a $1.60 pack with 1 panel each in a box of 12. Some of the players appeared on 2 stickers; my understanding is 12 of the panels were totally different. |
Four of the 68 action sticker panels repeat the same player as the larger middle sticker panel, but the tops and bottom smaller sticker panels are different.
|
Hey, Scott. Thanks for the details on the All Star Stickers. The large panels are really cool. I wish Brooks had a bigger one. Would love to have all of them but they are so expensive.

Day 110 – 20 Apr 2024
One of my favorite Oriole campaign slogans was from 1961. I searched for this sticker for a while and when I finally found it, I had to frame it. This sticker is oversized and rarely available. I have seen one other. In 1961 the Orioles had high expectations and came up with the ad campaign / slogan, “It Can be Done in 61.” I enjoy the bear and baby bird on either side. In 1960, the Orioles had the RoY (Hansen), Gentile, Triandos and Brooks appeared in his first of 18 All Star games. They had a winning record for the first time with 89 in the Win Column. Going into the 1961 season, they had high expectations but finished 3rd with a 95 Win Season. |

Does anyone have a Don Wingfield postmarked Brooks postcard? Just curious how early he began signing these.
Part of a set of 35 postcards. Beckett lists them as 1955-1962. |
While browsing Twitter/X yesterday, I found this un-credited picture which frankly I had never seen before....It's a cool photo of Norman Rockwell working with Brooks to capture photographs to assist him prior to him painting his famous "Thanks Brooks" work of art:

Wingfield Brooks Robinson
I am not really sure. I am not sure any of the Wingfield BW Post Cards got a number grade. Killebrew colored version has a number grade. A lot of test issues and odd items get Authentic. Another issue is all the writing on this one. I am speculating on this one though. My guess is all the writing on it.
