A little help...

I figured if anyone knows what these are,it's someone here!

Can anybody give me any information or thoughts on these?

My FIL found them cleaning his house today...apparently his from childhood (1950's)...but he can't remember if they were from a board game or where he got them...

This is the ASCO trademark. I’ve seen it mostly with 1969, some rare 1970, and the Twins have one with c1968. Then by early 70s they dropped the year and the pennants got stiff. Trench ‘69s don’t have the thick letter MLB.

What are the dimensions? I’m guessing they’re pretty tiny...

You're right, they are tiny! 1 inch tall and 3.5 inches long.

Recent acquisitions .... Pirates is late 30s. Mets are ‘63 and ‘69, the latter of which is near perfect condition.

Isn’t that Pirates the BF3 premium like the 1936 Yankees Champions?

No, not BF3 ..... I can sort of date it from this pennant lot that was sold some years ago:

Like the “PM-10” pins, BF3 may not stand for anything.

Sweet Yankees pennants in that other thread, Jason! Did any other team, beside the Yankees, get fringe??

If someone can answer Andrew ^^^^, I’m sure he’d appreciate it.

bocca001 03-03-2021 07:23 AM

I would love to find that Giants bf3 premium pennant. Pretty cool. I see the small one all the time.

They are called bf3 premiums because that's what they are, as explained on the premium offer below.

According to The Sports Collectors Bible, the BF stood for baseball felt, and the PM stood for baseball miscellaneous. The number was the category.

PM = Baseball Misc...??? I guess BM was already taken.

I picture Rob wearing these as he plays with his pins and pennants...

If you already have them Rob, make sure you let Marc know so he can pick them up. :D

Thanks for the laugh, Rob...

It brought me back to my favorite moment at the last National (back when we were allowed to attend those types of things...)

The pics tell the story:

1. My wife miraculously gets permission to hold the Honus Wagner T206
2. She gets a brief rush, knowing she's holding a few million dollars in her hand
3. She quickly grows disenchanted, as she realizes it's just a boring baseball card
4. She moves on and finds a booth that's selling those same Baseball Keds... and she immediately tries them on
5. Miraculously, they fit and she is euphoric. Her experience at The National is now complete!

Sorry, but I don't understand your post. I see no explanation on the premium offer, but I am an old man whose eyes are failing...

perezfan 03-04-2021 12:08 AM

My eyes are equally bad...

Did they really refer to them as BF3 Premiums during the time of issue? I can't see it anywhere within the text of the Offer.

Saw both of these online.

I assume the Boston Yankees is a repro?

Is the Culver Cubs related to the fast food chain?

Thanks!

Love the pics. That's funny...and I could see my wife doing the exact same thing. If she would even go to the National. I mean she'd go...but she'd be as patient as I am when we're at the mall and she wants to "run into" Sephora. :)

The company who made them wouldn’t have referred to them as BF3 as that was a designation created by Jefferson Burdick in The American Card Catalouge in 1939 and used later in The Sports Collectors Bible.

Is anyone having any luck finding something to buy on Ebay with their 5% ebay bucks promotion? I've been trying...Nothing out there.

It kinda sucks that ebay has re-embraced the auction format. Granted you can get some deals because I think a lot of people forget when an auction is ending or are just too impatient to bother to wait in the first place....but I prefer the best offer option.

Complaining aside, the eBay Gods did shine upon me once last week with a Rams pennant I didn't already have. Can't remember the last time that happened. Listed for $39 or best offer no less. Right place right time. It was newly listed, claiming the top spot in my search results. Couldn't believe my eyes. I almost pulled a hamstring repeatedly power pushing the buy it now option with every fiber of my being before the fast finger crowd saw it. If anyone has been on a cruise and witnessed a slot tournament, that's what I envision occurring across America when a new rare pennant is listed on ebay....or one that is mis-priced.

Anyway I have a similar one, with slightly different Ram but only 3/4 size. This one is full size.

perezfan 03-04-2021 04:53 PM

Glad that Rams pennant found its proper home. Can't even remember the last time I found a pennant of that caliber for under $50. Great score, Rob!

There's a nice pennant on ebay like the bottom one shown. Opening bid $23. I had to dig mine out to see if the ebay one would be an upgrade or possibly be the "backwards F" variation. Anyway, I noticed two variations (other than colors) in these two. The top one doesn't have the "WC" over the bottom stitches and its tassels were cut on an angle. Seems like not many were cut this way, no?

Top one is definitely rarer. Probably one of these for every 20 - 25 of the orange version. The Giants sure had a lot of subtle variations in their pennants!

Yeah, I just picked up the top one a few months ago from Erik (thanks Erik). The funny thing about the top one is that the tassels are closer to the middle, almost making it seem like a Mitchell and Ness pennant, but it is clearly vintage.

I am the high bidder right now on the ebay one, but my bid isn't all that high in case anyone wants to go and get it. But I'd buy it for $23 any day.

perezfan 03-05-2021 01:56 PM

Does anyone know what the little "WC" initials stand for on the orange version?

WinCraft?
Artist's initials?
WC Fields?

If this has already been discussed... Nevermind!

Also in the bottom pennant, the bridge does not fully extend to the edges of the baseball ..

Your tassels aren’t cut on the diagonal. Maybe my “spine person” just had a wild hair that day. :p

I believe it was super sleuth Kyle who tracked it down to West Coast Novelty (or maybe WC Concessionaires?). I think they may still be in business. I can’t remember if he posted his findings here or in his blog.

"WC" = West Coast Novelty. It's one of a half dozen different concessionaire's marks seen on pennants manufactured by Trench.

West Coast Novelty ran concessions at several venues in the San Francisco Bay area. You'll find their mark on Trench-made pennants produced for the San Francisco Giants and nearby University of California made throughout the early 1960s.

They're still in business, too! Today, they're involved in the related field of sports licensing. See: https://www.thewcngroup.com/
