Snype
Was anyone else bidding on any Snype auctions this evening?
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...327a4adec7.jpg |
Haven't even been able to confirm my email. Tried about 20 times, never worked.
|
Welp!
I guess that’s good news that they’re getting more attention than they expected? Not sure why they didn’t feel the need to invest in enough bandwidth to actually be able to handle the traffic. But this isn’t the first time this has happened to an AH. |

I don’t think server and network capacity was the only issue. “On Monday, as many of the first auctions were closing on his new site, Snype, the platform had massive technical glitches. The main feature that allows a bidder to put in a “snype” — a pre-programmed last-second bid — instead triggered the auctions themselves to end, no matter how much time was left. For other auctions, the bidding features were completely disabled. The site was taken down as the glitches were discovered, Probstein told cllct. … Probstein said he is also looking into the possibility that Snype was a target of a hacking scheme and is not sure of a timeline for its return.” https://www.cllct.com/sports-collect...nical-glitches |

Interesting take. I’m going to guess that no matter how much beta testing you perform, it’s always an adventure once you start live action. |
Good to know
Didn’t see it yesterday |
Lots of issues even before the crash. Registering was difficult though I finally did it. No way to save searches. Trying to scroll through what was being auctioned was annoying because every five or so lots you had to "please wait a moment" while the next five loaded and then periodically it would send you back to the first lot, so after a while I gave up attempting to browse the auction.
|
What a mess. While I'm not a fan of Probstein, I was hoping there'd be some deals to be had due to some strong cards offered at launch and a small user base.
I was not able to verify my email address, put in a ticket, got no response, then suddenly got a "You're in!" email a week later. The search and scroll system is annoying. The fact that some of the best items are only biddable by those with "Super Byder" status is a joke. Add in the technical issues that shut down the site and prevented the first lots from being sold and it's not looking like Snype has a bright future. |
I'd guess that all of the auctions that ended yesterday will be cancelled and relisted.
The entire website needs revamped before opening any of the auctions again. It was buggy all week even before the increased traffic. And the user interface definitely needs some tweaking / upgrades. |

Yeah, the scrolling function was definitely an issue. I thought maybe it was a browser or memory problem on my end, since I'm still running Windows 10. |
I had registered and the next day I received an email confirming several consignments that I had submitted. Only problem was that I did not consign anything.
Sent a note and got a quick 'we've issued a ticket' but then never heard back. |
Maybe the Cloudflare outage affected them?

The Cloudflare outage didn’t start until early this morning. |

Hmmm, anybody else having charges show up on the debit/credit card they put down with Probstein when they registered for thier auctions?
|
Ok, now I’m getting e-mails from them. I’ve apparently won auctions, and getting payment confirmations as it looks like they’re automatically charging my card.
Small amounts as they were lowball bids I put in as placemarkers before they shut the auction down, but concerning nonetheless. |

Same. I wasn’t charged though. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...4caf077c05.jpg |

As a super buyer you can delay paying or something I read
Also can do wire transfers As non super guys are immediate payments Daryl be careful- still required to pay Might be a non payment thing if you don’t do anything despite the glitch and auction cancellations |
Just got off the phone with my bank since I got a fraud alert from them, and apparently they are making adjustments on Probsteins end already with some transactions, so hopefully they are getting this sorted this morning.
I would have loved to have won those auctions at my bid price…….but I know that’s not realistic. :) |
Quote:
I would gladly pay them for the auctions I “won” at these prices. |
I also "won" a bunch of auctions yesterday and the day before at bargain prices. Ha! I am registered as a "Super Bydder" so not getting automatically charged though.
Just makes no sense why all of the functions on the site were not paused as soon as the site was taken offline. That would be the first thing to do. And there has been no official communication from them other than the CLCT article. Wouldn't it be wise to send an email to all registered users explaining what is going on? |

This looks really really really bad. Not only does it look like shill bidding likely occured, I'm concerned about identity theft and or stolen credit card information.
|
How is this different from anything Probstein did in the past?

This is bad
I signed up last week as I saw some interesting cards They cannot get this working right-should not even started Now this!! |
Based on a few posts on Reddit by a consignor who corresponded with Rick - https://www.reddit.com/r/PokeInvesti..._site_by_rick/
Sounds like Rick is trying to finalize a new deal with eBay to get back on there ASAP. Told the consignor - "'we are in the middle of doing a deal with eBay we already have your items pictured and described so we can post to eBay fairly quickly with your permission please let me know if this works for you thanks, rick" |
Not super surprising that he’s going back. But even for a jaded pessimist like me, the timing seems awfully zippy.

Why would ebay take him back? Not a good look. (OK I know why, but still)

Full bidder & consignor information Names, emails, addresses Birthdates & payment information Complete bid histories All of it. Just sitting there. But the security breach wasn't even the worst part. The exposed database revealed something damning: multiple accounts shared addresses linked to Probstein, his wife, & known scammer Kevin Burge. One account placed 11,277 bids. The username? "Hunny Bunny." The email address? Rick Probstein's. Wow. |
Other Issues
Maybe I wear a tin hat but what if they did not get enough bidders and they decide to cancel the auction outright, using technical difficulties as an out. Few people knew about their transition from Ebay. Prices were low in many cases. Consignors may have been up in arms. Just a theory.
|
I'm not buying into the narrative that the site was having tech difficulties and then everything just got accidentally exposed ... blah, blah, blah ... This was a hack, period.

Sometimes sloppy execution/incompetence exposes corruption.

This will soon blow over like every other alleged scandal. This industry is too big to normal levels.

This is enough for me. I will not be using the platform.

If Rick makes his way back to eBay, I wonder what percentage of his former consignors will steer clear. |
EVERYONE needs to avoid this guy

they consign with him for a reason see concept #1 in signature |
Surely this will make it to the FBI. Right?

You may be right, though. Every single consignor might resume doing business with Rick. They may believe Rick will get them top dollar. |
He's toast.
