Been looking for this one for quite a while, 1974 KC Royals team issue.............

the 'stache 01-01-2013 11:48 PM

Nice Jim Rice, Jerry!

And Phil, wow, George Brett looked like a kid, didn't he? I get the same feeling when I look at Robin Yount's early cards. Hard to believe he was a major league shortstop.

Exhibitman 01-02-2013 04:37 PM

Nice Pepe Mangual RC!

Harliduck 01-03-2013 07:44 PM

Down to TWO more need for my 63 Fleer set...just picked this Wills RC up, really excited to get this card.

Very nice cards, guys!!!

I remember when Topps started their All Rookie team trophies again in 1987. I loved that set. Jose Canseco, Wally Joyner, Danny Tartabull, Robby Thompson, Todd Worrell, Cory Snyder, Pete Incaviglia, Andy Allanson, Bruce Ruffin, Andres Thomas. As a Brewer fan, I was upset to learn that Dale Sveum was selected as the third baseman, yet he didn't get the trophy on his card.

The 1987 set reminded me of the 1962 set a lot.

Hey Joe: Love the cards, but you need to open those scan images in a photoshop-type app and maybe just press a button or two to brighten them up a bit so we can appreciate them.:)

Volod 01-11-2013 05:54 AM

Yeah, thanks, Leon: Always have loved the '52 Bowmans because they were the first set I collected as a wide-eyed kid looking for Boston Braves. Man, opening the five-cent waxpacks at the corner store and seeing all those duplicates of Del Rice, Clyde McCullough, et al, that seemed to always be in the third series packs. Never saw a Mantle or Hodges or any other star, though -- wonder if Bowman was manipulating the contents even that early in the spring.

It has a few small numbers written lightly in pencil on the back. But I've never been very condition sensitive, and the price was right..

Hopefully I won't have to sell this one anytime soon, but my luck hasn't been the best over the years. This is actually the nicest '52 Topps Mantle that I've owned. It's in slightly better condition than the PSA 4 that I had several years ago so either PSA has started grading more strictly during my time off or the seller just got a tough break on the grade.

I have not seen another PSA 2 that nice before. Maybe it was the centering? Either way, gorgeous, clean card with great color. Would take that one any day.

The only thing I could really see that knocked it down is some light wax on the back. I added a back scan to my original post so you can take a look. It's very light and tough to even notice unless you are looking for it. I had a PSA 5 '52 Topps Mays that had worse wax staining on the back and it wasn't in much better shape than this card.

bcbgcbrcb 01-20-2013 06:28 AM

EBay, Derek. The seller did not know it was from 1974, $9.99

I'd take that card any day. Congrats on the pickup! My philosophy is to always buy the card, not the holder, and you got a great card.

Thanks, that's always been my philosophy as well. I've always collected low to mid grade cards anyway so the number on the label doesn't really matter too much to me. If I can get a PSA 2 with the eye appeal of a nice PSA 4 without having to pay the PSA 4 price, I'll take those kind of deals all day long.

robsbessette 01-20-2013 08:14 AM

Wow!

How is that a 2? I collect low grade stuff as well. But, man, that is a beauty. I can only hope one day to add such a stellar card to my collection!

I was wondering the same thing when I saw the scans and I was honestly expecting there to be some kind of unexpected flaw when I got it in hand. I was pleasantly surprised when I couldn't find anything. If someone had covered up the label and asked me to guess the grade I probably would have said a PSA 3.5 or maybe a PSA 3 to be on the safe side, but I've seen worse looking cards in PSA 4 holders.

pawpawdiv9 01-20-2013 11:38 AM

Nice 52 Mantle...i collect mantle and hoping some day i can afford a low grade/auth card.
As far as looks....looks awesome just the corners might be light, which is ok in my book.
If theres anything you need or find, let me know. I ran across a bunch of folks that take their auctions off Ebay and use paypal to cut cost.
Sometimes its a waiting game, its definetly worth to get a nicely centered card. than hopping on the 1st one that you see.

the 'stache 01-21-2013 05:23 AM

That '52 Topps Mantle is gorgeous. Count me as one of the ones shocked that it got a 2, even with that stain on the back.

Yeah, I was the other non-winning bid on the beater. I'm on a thin budget this week, and with what that went for, I really didn't think that this one would go cheap enough for me. Shipping included, landed it for 3 less..

The first card my dad bought me was a '72 Clemente back in 1986, the pinnacle of my collection. Your son will never forget it!
