October pick-ups

I'll get things started off on the Post-War forum w/ this "holy grail"!!!

brob28 10-01-2013 08:10 PM

Wow Derek, very nice image minor league issue? What is it?

h2oya311 10-01-2013 08:38 PM

1958 Omaha Cardinals Team Issue

Sorry, I guess I should've been more clear!

It's a 1958 Omaha Cardinals Team Issue card of the legendary Bob Gibson. I had been searching for one for about 11 years now and couldn't be happier with the one I picked up. I was surprised at the relatively small size and thickness of the card stock, as I had imagined that it would be more "photo-like" in size and thickness. I was wrong on both fronts!!

The seller later e-mailed me the following: "this very card was on display earlier this summer when Bob Gibson's statue at Omaha's Werner Park was presented. Bob commented that he only remembered seeing one other and that was many years ago!"

Beatles Guy 10-01-2013 09:08 PM

Excellent Gibson. I didn't even know that existed :)

Incredible card, Derek. Congrats!

It's a 24 card set (23 players, one header card)...I don't recognize any of the other names in the set but maybe the Cardinals collectors know a few.

You can find a common for about $20 on eBay every once in a while. I haven't checked recently...except to snag Mr. Gibson (for about the price of 50 commons). :D

Great piece! I love those regionals and team issues.

This doesn't even compared to the other October pickups so far, but I will post anyway as it has taken a long time to find this one.

Jackson RC was picked up in a large lot of 66s and has been eluding me forever as I'm trying to complete my 66 set.

Koufax RC was picked up from a fellow board member as I start to entertain the idea of going after the 55 set.

Real happy with both!

stlcardsfan 10-05-2013 06:21 AM

Congrats Rob, both great pick ups. Hard to believe how much the value of that Jackson RC continues to soar on Ebay!

Damn Phil! You were the one who got the Ripken!! Great pick-up!!! I'm so mad I didn't just do the BIN price...I tried a best offer but knew it would sell for full price.

Great for you that you were able to sell yours for 3.5x just a few months ago!!

Very glaf to see it went to you though vs. someone else.

bcbgcbrcb 10-08-2013 05:21 AM

Thanks, Derek. I thought about making an offer but figured that someone would jump on it while I waited for an answer. Now if I can only afford an orange one...........

Derek,

I'm moving along slowly, trying to find oddball RC's along with well-centered RC's of post-war players. I don't have my website updated yet. I'm way to busy right now working and helping my two kids with their new houses.

Damn, I'd always wanted to get one of those Ripkens eventually. Looks like, even in bad condition, they've worked their way out of my typical price range:(

Yeah. It's not so much, dropping out of the game for a bit, that get's me the most. But that, when I don't have any disposable money, all the stuff I've been looking for pops up for cheap, and keeps trying to suck me back in.. Already a day into deciding that I need to drop out for a bit, I'm already fighting off the urge on 2 items right now. I've got a feeling I'm gonna cave in and get one of 'em..Hopefully not both.

So bid 'em up guys, and save me the troubles..

Yep, I can definitely relate. Every time I think about the need to step back for a little bit, something unexpected ALWAYS pops up. And, yes, I am addicted.

Holy Toledo, pawpawdiv9!!! How blatant on the shill bidding. 51 retractions in 6-months? 70% activity with the seller? Just horrible.

There are some sellers I don't even bother with because of the obvious shill bidding. Too bad because there are some nice items that I would have gotten into from time to time.

There's always someone out there looking to corrupt a process, especially if they can make a little more money.

She is your fiance now Chris. After you are married you get to take care of the dog and handle complaints about cards :)

Haha, which is why I am trying my best to complete my collection before the wedding!

I should add that I am very fortunate that she supports my collecting, although I am not entirely sure she understands it or can appreciate why money is better spent on cards rather than jewelry.

Do yourself a favor: create a spreadsheet listing your entire collection then a few days before the wedding print it and mail it to yourself via certified mail. When it arrives, don't open it, just put it aside. Just in case there ever comes a day when you have to show what assets you came into the marriage owning.

darkhorse9 10-17-2013 03:26 PM

These two are a HUGE pick up for me. They may not be world beaters, but they represent the last two cards I needed to complete the 1957 set!

With that set complete I now only need to finish the 1958 set (38 cards) before I have every base set back to 1954.

Thanks Dan! I'm hoping the 5 crosses over to a 6 or 7 at PSA. Back is a little off-centered, but everything else looks great on the 5. I'll know for certain once I get the cards in hand.

I've had great luck crossing SGC Bond Breads to PSA (SGC40 to PSA 5, SGC50 to PSA 5, SGC80 to PSA 7)... I'm hoping the luck continues!

Bill, if you can't do it with your scanner software and have no image editing software, check out this freeware:
http://faststone-viewer.joydownload....FdKf4AodwHcAHw

I use it all the time when I don't want to wait for Photoshop to load. Resizing is under the Edit menu. It does a lot more too. Check it out.

Sweet Jackies. I think they look WAY better in the handsome SGC holders. If not for resale to Registry types I think that black framing really makes cards pop.

Ya, I definitely need to hang out here more often. I'm enjoying collecting pre-war, but the vintage cards were my first love as a child, and I'm going to have to find some balance between pre-war, vintage and modern.

Great additions, everybody!!!

Dan, that's one of my favorite Clementes. Ok, who am I kidding? I love em all. But the 50s cards are just a cut above. The '58 Topps might be my favorite card from all the post WW II issues.

I have a set of these and some " unopened" packs. When collecting them I was always amused by sellers who offered unopened packs with possibility of a Mantle because it was easy to know who was in the pack by sliding the wrapped gum out.

Also, what was it Tattoos in 1960 but Tatoos in 1964 . :-)

Bestdj777 10-28-2013 05:42 AM

I have always found that amusing as well. There is no way most sellers would take a risk of letting a Mantle go like that when they could easily look inside. So, I would never take a chance. Fortunately, this guy guaranteed it was the Mantle autoball and showed clear pictures of the printed in Canada lines on the wrapper to confirm it was OPC.

How do you store your unopened packs?

Now I will have to search for a Topps Venezuela Tattoo of Mantle, although I am sure that is not something I will ever come across.

Happy with the centering, and even the corners, to an extent. The scuffing on the bottom border must be from the scanner or the slab becuase it doesn't look that bad with the card in hand.

Thanks Matt. It is the first pack I have added to my collection. I have not had anything graded before and do not think they would identify the player on the label, so I will likely leave it as is. Any suggestions on how to store it though? I don't think they are particularly large packs, but want to keep it from getting crushed, etc., in my safe.
