Post your favorite Yaz items
I know I'm still new to Net54, but for those of you who don't know, I am a player collector and a passionate one. Those of you who peruse the football card forum might have seen my Gino Cappelletti thread and maybe seen me mention that I am a John Hannah collector as well. However, my biggest collecting focus and passion is collecting Carl Yastrzemski.
With that in mind, I wanted to start a thread for others to share their favorite Yaz items in their collections. I'll start it off by showing some of my personal favorites. For those of you who want to see more of my collection, here is a link to my Yaz Master Set: http://www.psacard.com/PSASetRegistr...6&m=33062&ac=0 |
Yaz
Hey Dan, they look as good here as over yonder. Good stuff
|
Thanks Al, I was surprised there wasn't a Yaz thread already started on this site. Figured I better start one. You must have cool Yaz stuff to share!

Nice Yaz collection! The first pack of cards I ever bought and my only 1972 pack contained Yaz and I still have the card. Its pretty rough as i was five years old at the time and carried that card around for years with my 1973s thru 1975s in an old metal keyed box. Just for fun i will post a picture of it tomorrow.

My dad is a huge Yaz fan. He's not much of a memorabilia collector, but I try to pick him up a Yaz item once a year...when Jim stinson offered this one up a few years back I couldn't pass it up... It's signed by the entire Yaz Family, more than likely during spring training of Carl's rookie campaign... It has since been framed with a photo of Carl Sr. During his semi pro days! With his two sons (Richard and Carl) who were bat boys at the time....
|
Wow, that's pretty awesome. The Sox actually had sent a scout to Long Island to scout Carl Sr when they discovered junior. It sounds like senior was a hell of a good ball player himself.
And I gotta say, that's the only Hattie Yastrzemski signature I've ever seen. :) |

I met Yaz in Cooperstown in the Summer of 1989....when he was inducted into the HOF. We had a brief conversation. A really nice guy. TED Z . |
I don't have one but I think a Yaz bat would be a neat crossover collectors item.

I pick up Yaz items frequently and I promise not to post them all, but I was excited about this one that came today. I hadn't planned to upgrade my PSA 4, but this 6 is much nicer in terms of corners and centering, and the price was right. Only 7 copies graded higher, so very happy with a nice mid grade copy:

I personally don't have much in regard to Yaz, but I do really like the '68 Sports Illustrated poster. I guess they produced a ton since it's still a pretty inexpensive piece.

Yeah, I love that poster!

Got a helluva deal on this 65 Topps and it arrived in the mail today. Thanks! I actually prefer this over most of the basic set, because the photo is so unique. Almost every other basic issue is a head shot or a batting stance. The 65T is definitely different. This card leaves me 1 card shy of completing the 60's portion of the PSA basic set. Then I need 1 new and 1 upgrade to finish the 70's and the 1980 Topps and 81 Donruss I just added leave me needing 2 new to finish the 80's. Below is my wish list, the only cards I need before I consider my 34-card basic set complete: 1963 Topps #115 in PSA 7 1971 Topps #530 in PSA 7.5 or 8 1973 Topps #245 in PSA 8 1982 Topps #650 in PSA 9 1984 Fleer #412 in PSA 10 If you have any of those for sale or trade, please let me know. Thanks! Link to basic set: http://www.psacard.com/PSASetRegistr...5&m=33062&ac=0 |

Howdy, podnah. I don't know if this sort of Yaz would interest you, but you may wish to consider the fantasy card that former Sports Collectors Digest editor and publisher Bob Lemke crafted earlier this year. He made a fantasy 1961 Post Cereal Yaz. If you're interested, I will say the scan he posted of it on Net54 postwar board was brilliant, and well worth the small amount of money you will pay for it. Bob offered the six different 1961 Post Cereal cards he did as a typical backside of box sheet of 6, with Yaz, Frank Howard, Sandy Koufax, Jackie Jenson, and Jim Kaat. I forget the sixth player, but he puts a lot of thought and tender loving care into each of his creations. With a Bob Lemke fantasy card, it's not about how much they're going to appreciate in value; rather, it's about how much you are going to appreciate the card, and being entertained and enraptured by its beauty with owning one in your collection for just a few bucks. Perhaps someone on here can help you find the thread from earlier this past spring, and help you locate Mr. Lemke. That is, of course, if a fantasy card of Yaz would push your "gotta have it" button. If not, no big deal. Kind regards, Brian Powell |

Huge mail day today, courtesy of some Christmas generosity by my friend Casey. Here are a couple of the new additions. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/.../63T%20Yaz.jpg This is a big one. With this card filling a gap, I'm now done with the 1960-70 portion of the basic set! http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...z%20front2.jpg http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...az%20back2.jpg Love the discs, especially when they're minty and in one of these fitted slabs. |

Here are a few more. I know a photo but it perfectly combines prewar Red Sox with Postwar Red Sox. All 3 were great Of's for the Sox. Yaz looks great in this photo (1962) with Harry and Duffy. And in honor of that great triple crown season, his 67 card. And last but not least (for me), the signed photo is very near and dear to me. It was signed for me at the greater Boston sportsman show in Nov, 1967 and Yaz was on top of the world. I was 7 years old and my Uncle (along with my Dad) arranged for me to meet him backstage. I was a lucky kid in that my Uncle knew Yaz very well as they went to school (Merimack) and palled around together so he got me backstage and it was just me, Dad and my Uncle. We chatted for 20 minutes. You will notice the photo is torn because in a fit of anger one year after it was signed, I tore it in half. Very misguided but almost 50 years later, it is a great reminder of my youth and love for the Red Sox. |
Michael S, what are those little stamps that look like 1976 and 1977 Topps cards? I see you've got 1973 and 1981 too. What are they?

Very good question. I know they are not period or issued by Topps. I believe they were included in a very large Yaz collection I purchased awhile back that was filled with all sorts of fun Yaz stuff including accomplishment newspapers, photo's, pins. It was massive and these stamps were in the lot. I just put them in my Yaz binder and did not think much about them. By the way, that same lot had every mainstream Yaz card from his playing days and they were all raw and I have since graded most of them with all coming back 7-9 psa. They were incredible. Anyway, I think the stamps are some sort of novelty items, issued who know's when? |
Just won this Yaz item last night but I think I like the back ad as much as anything. Would love one of those tshirts.

Got outbid on a Yaz rookie card last night. I believe it was a PSA 7 but obviously the winner wanted it more than I did as every time I put in a bid it was immediately beat.
Seen it for around $25 to begin and I went as high as almost $50.00, which was still a good deal imo, but with shipping, import, exchange rate, etc, it was getting to far out of reach. I believe the purchaser got a good deal, even though I likely made him spend another $30.00 or so bucks for it. |
Thanks Derek, that Venz RC is awesome! That's a card I'd love to own, that I probably never will.
I recently landed a major upgrade of my regular Topps RC. I'm thrilled about it and will share it when it arrives, but the seller is taking his sweet time shipping it. |

Some of the more vintage among my recent Yaz additions:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...%20Sockers.jpg That's a Venezuelan. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...2026%20Yaz.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...RBI%20Ldrs.jpg http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...az%20panel.jpg Got my own 74 Topps Stamps panel. I think I'm going to separate the single though. |
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...Post%20Yaz.jpg
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...st%20front.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...nst%20back.jpg Very excited about this addition. The Peel Offs have DREADFUL centering problems. While not perfectly centered, it's hard to find one with this much white space on all 4 sides. |
Yaz
Your right; the peel-offs really do tend to be all over the place in regard to centering. You instruction back example looks great to me. Do you already have the blank back example? I have both examples of Brooks Robinson, but I picked them up years and years ago when most people didn't even think about centering (at least I didn't).
Unsure if you collect proofs, but several years ago I picked up some Brooks progressive proofs (color separations) of the peel offs. For some reason, unknown to me, I really like the proof stuff. Probably will be worth little to most others, but I like 'em. |
No, I don't have the blank back yet, but I will eventually. I do collect proofs here and there and the peel off proofs sound awesome! I'd like to see your Brooksie proofs.

Peel- Offs
1 Attachment(s)
Not the greatest picture of the proofs, but I think you can get a pretty good idea what they look like.
|
Extremely cool!!
|
Yaz
Now let's find the proofs of the Yaz peel-offs!
What's kinda interesting to me is that notice how Brooks' bill of his hat is cut off in the front and they rounded the back of his hat for the blue egg shaped border on the proofs. Then on the complete peel-off they must have air brushed the front bill and added some to the back of the hat as well. |

I don't have anything rare or really interesting, as I've just barely started working on my vintage collection. But I've always loved Yaz. I'm Irish Catholic, and 1/4 Polish. So, it should be no surprise that I have an affinity for the Sox, and Yastrzemski. If my Dad hadn't changed the family name, I'd have been writing/typing Grzegorzewski all my life. I get tired just thinking about it. :D
I do have a fairly nice ungraded version of my favorite Yaz card, his '75 Topps. I'll pick up a PSA graded one. But for now, I'm happy. http://net54baseball.com/picture.php...ictureid=16006 |

Some recent pre-1980 Yaz additions:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...0Yaz%20PSA.jpg I like that this Super isn't miscut at the top. Most of you probably know that at least 80% of the copies of this card show part of another card. The 3 cards below are from a pretty scarce Boston Globe set and are very low pop. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...2060s%2066.jpg ^^Pop 3, none higher. I don't have too much in the way of Yaz, but of what I do have, these two are my favorites, especially the 1963 panel.

Man, Mike, both panels are great but that first one is crazy! 3 HOFers, plus Maris and Minoso!
|
Got this back recently from a PSA sub. One of 4 Venz Yaz cards in the collection:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...kers%20PSA.jpg Today I got back the card below. I now am only one card away from completing the basic Topps run. If anybody has an 82 Topps PSA 9 they're willing to sell, I'd appreciate it. http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/.../73T%20Yaz.jpg |
Here is a transparency slide of Yaz, from 1968, produced by MLB for use in TV broadcasts. I have seen a few of these over the years, but this is the oldest one I've ever seen. This one wouldn't scan well, so I stole the seller's photo:
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...ide%201968.jpg I was also able to pick up similar slides for 2 of my football player collections too. |
off topic....Was watching my local long island news..story about a cemetery in Southampton NY that vandals tipped over tombstones. I saw a Yastrzemski grave in the background (untouched). News 12 long island aired the story and it can probably be viewed online.
