Got this privately from an old time collector in Pennsylvania. It has been long rumored to exist, but many collectors debunked it as just rumors. I can confirm it exists, and now it's part of my collection. Circa 1999 there were 9 uncatalogued T206 Proofs of cards that never went into production...this is the 10th pose. Shoeless Joe Jackson.

Mike, are you going to start a Jackson back run?

MVSNYC 04-01-2024 01:23 PM

Hi Sean! Would be cool, but it's only this Blank Back Proof that exists, no other examples with rare backs.

I tried to do a Joe Jackson T211 one year, I’m not so good with the photoshop.

MVSNYC 04-01-2024 02:26 PM

Well, this joke didn't get too far, haha...

We did this April Fool's post about 10-12+ years ago...Wonka did the photoshopping, and a bunch of us (Me, Joe D, etc) played along. It got surprisingly far.

Anyway, would be an epic card, if real. ;)

Not a card, but possibly unique. Finding a baseball player on a gem tintype is extremely unusual, finding a team is unprecedented, to my knowledge. This one is definitely 1860s vintage. Gem tintypes measure approximately 1" x 1". This one is 3/4" x 15/16".

I thought you might like this one, Leon.

You could make a locket for it and wear it around! Was that what it was originally intended for?

GaryPassamonte 04-02-2024 02:10 PM

There were albums specifically made to hold this size image. However, I wouldn't be surprised if some found their way into lockets.

I had some bids in on that Young. Nice pickups. I was a little unhappy about not winning anything I really wanted in that auction, so I picked this up the next morning. Somewhere there are some short bordered e121's.

Is there a story/explanation of why they chose to use a batting photo of Cy Young on this issue? He had 490+ wins as an P and a career .210 BA when this was issued!

April Pick Ups

Although these are not baseball cards, these are now some of my most cherished cards I own thanks to a fellow N54'er.

Have been wanting to obtain a "Chariots of Fire" playing day card from the main characters from the movie- Harold Abrahams, Eric Liddell, Lord Burghley (Lord Lindsay in the movie), and E.A. Montague (Known as Aubrey in movie)

1) Picked up a nice graded Burghley for my birthday. Easy enough

2) Picked up an Abrahams 1929 Godfrey Philips raw along with a Charley Paddock from a fellow board member last year. Sent off to SGC. Awesome.

3) I thought my search for Montague was impossible, so I picked up a replicated postcard of him Steeplechasing in the background in the 1924 Olympics. But lo and behold, I then discovered he had a card in the 1922 Bunsen Confectionery set.

I found a dealer in England who was willing to part with one. Boom! I thought my quest was nearly complete...

4) The Liddell was another quest I thought to be impossible, as TCDB showing nothing but post playing day cards for Liddell. Makes sense since Liddell had a short career running and focused on his ministry work in China after.

But then thanks to some late night digging on Anson's PreWar card's site... I found the 1924 Gallaher set that included an Abrahams, Liddell, and Henry Stallard (another obscure sidequest I have yet to embark on).

As luck would have it, Liddell was actually mispelled as "Liddle", which is why I never found it on TCDB. Lets go!!!

The hard part now was actually finding a copy. Liddle was not seen on any website, outside an overpriced graded copy of the Abrahams.

Just for fun I threw a shot out in the dark on net54... As luck would have it, a fellow n54 member had several Gallaher cards including the Liddle and Abrahams. So naturally I got both.

So there you have it, the "Chariots of Fire" playing days card for each member complete. Here are pictures of the last 3 difficult cards I had to track down. They will head to SGC sometime early next year.

Over the moon about these!

Nice, Leon! I remember a time when you couldn't hardly give those away, even complete sets in uncut sheets. I don't know if it was the artwork or what, but nobody wanted them almost regardless of the price. I finally blew out several sets after trying to get what I thought they should be worth. I suspect I'd get my prices now!

That is so awesome!!! I'm a huge fan of Eric Liddell and I'd been wanting a card of him for a long time, but like you I thought he didn't have any cards. Now I need to see if I can get a Gallaher of him.

Lovely cards - and congrats on finishing your Chariots of Fire set!

I also just linked the 1924 Gallaher to Liddell's ID on TCDB so people can actually know he has a playing-era card.

MCyganik 04-17-2024 12:03 PM

Just stumbled on this one from eBay. Fragile condition but not often does a program from April 17th, 1947 come up for sale. Jackie Robinson’s first MLB hit (a bunt single to third) and Duke Snider’s MLB debut. Jackie’s debut on Opening Day drew about 26k, but the follow-up only had about 10k in attendance. Today is the 77th anniversary!

Talk about recent floods on eBay, anyone saw the group of William Patersons this past week? More than a dozen HOF’ers and a good group of stars and commons as well by Greg Morris. There was a Hornsby and I think a Cobb as well. You rarely ever see even one of those. Only one I ever owned was the Travis Jackson rookie when I was doing the HOF RC collection back in the early 2010’s.

Here is a 1933 Wheaties Minneapolis Millers card of Spencer Harris. Larger than what I normally like to collect, but he happens to be the all-time hit leader for the minors leagues, racking up 3617 hits over 26 years in the minors, and according to his SABR biography, "Harris holds the minor-league mark with 2,287 runs scored. Harris is also the minor-league career leader in doubles (743) and total bases (5,434) and may also be the leader in walks." All while hitting .318 for his minor league career. He also played parts of four seasons in the majors.

So I couldn't resist adding a little Spencer into my card diet.
