I've never started a pickup thread yet, but here goes....these arrived yesterday actually-and I'm pretty excited because it's my first card from the Lionel Carter collection, and also a mini milestone for me with the Monster-#100 & 101 :D Thanks for a great transaction again Michael (BuffettFan)!!

Sincerely, Clayton

Leon, nice pickup, i've been looking for one of them for awhile now. Its lucky for you I found out about some other cards coming up in your next auction :) Does that complete your back run of these?

I thought it was already quite expensive and sort of thought you might be the one......glad it wasn't but not sure it matters. I had a few more increments but still think it was quite high.....

paleocards 02-01-2014 11:12 AM

The owner of my favorite shop called me last week to tell me that a nice collection had walked in his door. He sent me some scans of the cards he thought I'd be interested in, and I immediately knew which one I had to have. This is my first 19th-century HOFer and I'm thrilled it's an N162. To me, the brilliant color lithography of the Goodwins and the Allen & Ginters are so much more attractive than the often washed-out sepia photography of the N172 Old Judges. Anyway, here's my "newest" 126-year-old baseball card, enjoy!

Hey Leon, you were fighting me. "Lukcy" for you I already had one :) Not the 1st time you outbid me. You are starting to be my "Newman!" like in Seinfeld.

Blunder19 02-01-2014 11:24 AM

I was able to add the final T206 back to my cobb run... (I dont count the Cobb back as a T206) Now just missing the Coupon Type 3, T214 Victory and the Cobb back.

I was not sure if I would be a bidder at first.. but after getting a chance to speak with the owner of the card I felt confident the card was authentic. Also Bill Goodwin sent the card back to SGC to be regraded and came back as an authentic blank back again... so that also help put my worries at ease.

Looking forward to receiving the card in hand to check it out for myself.

Here is my new Addition:

Really awesome that you were able to put aside the concerns you posted about the "blank back" Cobb and pay five figures to add it to your collection.

Well done.

Blunder19 02-01-2014 04:54 PM

Thanks guys.. I am certainly very happy with how it has come along.. when I first started I expected no more than 20.. due to the scarcity/cost of about 9 of them... with the blank I am now at 26.. one of the great things about this website is following the progress of collectors projects.... perhaps seeing something someone else has been looking for.. and letting them know... and watching the collections come together..

Looking forward to seeing everyone's Feb pick ups this month.

Steve.. congrats on finding the Dahlen

Brad.. i love that Ruth Postcard..

and John... those OJs are great.... are you getting into OJ's now? is there an agreed checklist for them? how many are in the set? if so it will be fun to follow ur progress here.

TUM301 02-01-2014 05:20 PM

Brad that Ruth P C is beautiful, don`t think I`ve ever seen a Ruth sig. like that. Wow !

Thanks guys, I gave up two big pieces of my collection to get this but I figure this will be my new centerpiece. I have not seen too many times that he has signed his full name with the nickname. What makes it so cool is the Ruppert signature and the photo of them on the postcard signing the new contract. Sorry I'm a little stoked about having this one.

Red Cobbs

Jamie - Awesome Cobb run!! Congrats on the blank back; sweet!

MattyC 02-01-2014 08:33 PM

A much lesser Cobb, but finding one of these without the red color shifted onto the white baseball, right bat, and right basepath of the diamond was a goal of mine.

Good God, Jamie. That's an incredible run. Chapeau on a monster accomplishment! Just curious, do you have a favorite from these? Maybe due to a particular back (or lack thereof).

Brad, I've never seen Ruth sign his full name like that, though admittedly I have only seen about a hundred examples of his signature. I would assume this example represents a rarity. It's just beautiful.

I tell you, every time I see a modern card autographed in some messy scribble, I think about the Babe's auto. Nobody has ever signed more balls and pictures than the Bambino, yet every one of his signatures are aesthetically pleasing. Just something else that leaves a bit of a bad taste in my mouth when it comes to modern collectibles. So much seems half-assed and rushed.

Steve, kudos on finally finding your Dahlen. I really understand now why the T3s were voted most beautiful set. They're just breathtaking. I can't imagine looking at one of those in person, and not wanting to buy. Thank you for sharing it.

Paleo, I agree with you that the Goodwins and Allen & Ginters are beautiful. But I like the Old Judges, too, in large part because of the stark contrast between them. There's nothing being made today that resembles the Old Judges, or the Mayo Cut Plugs.

Greg, that's a really sweet Matty. Beautiful eye appeal.

Leon, one of these days when I get out to a Dallas show, I'd love to sit down and talk with you some about your type collection. One of the things my folks got me for Christmas are the type prints from Old Cardboard, and they're framed and on my wall now. Seeing all these different releases is a little overwhelming, to be honest. I think just storing them all would be a logistical nightmare.

It is the actual photo of him signing his 1933 contract with Ruppert as they did it in a park in St. Pete's. Thats what why I thought it was really cool besides the George H Babe Ruth signature that I have to admit I have never seen signed liked that before.

Here is the newspaper clipping for that photo.

That's an awesome run of Cobbs, Jamie!

I have to admit, you have me thinking about trying the same thing, albiet perhaps at a smaller scale (one for each manufacturer).

Jamie/Bill,

Thank you very much for the nice words about the Dahlen. It's been pretty frustrating. I've been looking for a Dahlen for a few years now, but they just haven't been showing up. It seems people have been holding on to them in hopes of his making it into the HOF. I just missed a couple others within the past 6 months or so, so I'm very glad to finally get one.

John, nice pick-ups from Goodwin. I was watching the Wiedman myself as an upgrade but opted to be happy with what I have. There were some amazing nice cards. I really liked the Foutz Brownie (apparently someone else did as well) and the Macullar was a great card (nice appearing, tough card).

As you all may be aware by now, one of my collecting focuses is Sam Rice cards, all backs/variations. Due to my early-Alzheimer's-like memory, I managed to acquire two E121/80 cards with Type 1 Reverse backs. A few weeks ago, in a thread re E121/80 backs, another Board member showed his Rice card with a Type 2 back. So, I contacted him, and he very kindly agreed to do a trade with me. Are Net 54 Board members great folks, or what?!! Bill, again I say, MANY THANKS!

Not sure if I posted these two yet Bugs Raymond cards yet.

The first is a super-rare red border Colgan Chip. What is particularly interesting about this one is that the red borders, I believe, were only made in 1912. Bugs didn't play Major League ball at all that year and actually died in early September. I would love to know if any Tin Tops were made of Bugs, but since those seem to have been produced after the red borders, I sort of doubt it.

The second just came back from SGC. The color on this silk just pops. It is far brighter in-person.
