Cool pieces sebie

Sebastian,

The background in your picture, seems to be advertising some sort of amazing single card collection pages 1-45. It seems to read M116's, pictures a CJ Joe Jackson. Do you recall who was advertising that find? An upcoming auction?

I'd be curious to know.

Thanks again, and some great T-206's you got there.

Tony

The Nasty Nati 07-31-2014 01:26 PM

Anyone pick up a photo of the new SGC slab?

sebie43 07-31-2014 01:29 PM

Thanks guys, and Tony that is Memory Lane's "rocky mountain collection" summer auction catalog.

e107collector 07-31-2014 01:34 PM

Thanks for the info Sebastian!!

Lots to look at

As always the National had an overwhelming amount of "stuff" to see. Sadly none of it was on my shopping list. Was there a Breisch-Williams in the room anywhere??? If so, I missed it.

Decided to expand the Cleveland Type Set and was last seen lugging a seat from old Municipal Stadium to the parking lot.

Enfuego 08-02-2014 10:26 AM

Very nice pick ups

Quite a haul Brian!

Brian Van Horn 08-02-2014 03:40 PM

Thank you, Raymond, Anthony and Daryl.

Raymond,

As for who is in the cabinet, I do not know. I just liked the cabinet.

Chris,

I did see an E107 in one of the cross rows in a multilevel glass cabinet. The woman indicated it was currently being auctioned and to check their website, but I do not recall the vendor.

Enfuego 08-02-2014 08:26 PM

Very nice pickups by all. I'll be going to "our" version of the national in October located in Syracuse, NY. Can't wait

Glyn,

Yes, that is the one I saw at the National.

Not much but the marquard is one of my favorite looking cards in the set, so I was pretty excited.

I got there Friday and "missed out" on most of the 1914 CJ action. Every dealer I talked to that had any 14's had already sold them the first day or even pre show opening. One dealer sold his half completed set to another dealer during set up for $65k cash! There was one beautiful Joe Jackson SGC 4 for $25k, but I could tell the seller didn't really want to part with it and that one was a wee bit over my budget for the weekend.
I did happen to find a small dealer in the corner that searched through his wares and found a very beat up raw Zach Wheat that he was asking $500 for. We settled at $350. Mission accomplished.

Matvoo 08-04-2014 08:24 AM

Leon,

That's a nice looking card for the grade!! Great centering, clarity and overall eye appeal.

Tony

Leon 08-04-2014 09:57 PM

T227 too...

Here's another. And thanks so much, guys. It looks like we all had a pretty good run. Since I was already spending too much I conserved a bit by going even lower condition than I normally do on this one....but the eye appeal is decent...I got it to go with the T5 I recently picked up as it is the same pose...So it was sort of unexpected until a few months ago.

Centauri 08-04-2014 10:16 PM

I had never seen or heard of the T227 set, or especially that Cobb. That is one very very cool card.

This is why I come to the site.

Matvoo 08-04-2014 11:13 PM

Never seen the t227 set also. I feel like a newbie

Luke 08-05-2014 12:34 AM

Nice pickups Leon! I love that T227 Cobb.

I found this Cycle 460 Johnson in the raw on Saturday afternoon, and I'm pretty pleased. Got it slabbed the same day as I like the SGC look (although I'd prefer the case to have a slimmer profile like PSA).

Amazing Cobbs, Leon.

And the centering on that Goudey Gehrig is outstanding; rare to see one like that.

I really enjoyed my 2 days at the National - wish it were more - my best pick-ups from the Show are:
(1) c.1930 Rogers Peet Clothing of WaJo. Best looking PSA 2 card I have ever seen! Has minor glue residue on the blank back.
(2) 1913-1915 large Fatima advertising poster of WaJo. While its condition is pathetic, it fits my budget nicely, and I'm thrilled to add it to the WaJo collection.
(3) E100 of Peckinpaugh fills voids in both my type collection and my collection of cards of players on Washington's 1924 Championship Team.
Val

tiger8mush 08-12-2014 06:43 PM

Val, awesome Fatima poster! Very nice pickup, congrats!

Hankphenom 08-12-2014 06:48 PM

Great pick-ups, Val. Sorry I missed seeing you, maybe I was away from my table. I was thrilled to find the 1924 Washington "Pennant Winners" pin featuring Walter for sale at the Leland's booth, and based on the price they had no idea of the rarity of that one. I upgraded my "Johnson For Congress" pin from Tom Spiker, who had the best I've seen. Also got a nice 1924 New York World Series program, and lastly, a cool newsphoto of cops escorting the tickets for the '24 series into the ballpark. A good National for both of us!

t206blogcom 08-12-2014 06:59 PM

Nice pickups Val!

ValKehl 08-12-2014 08:55 PM

Rob, Hank & Jason - Thanks for your kind words! Not only am I thrilled with these pickups, but I am also pleased that I was able to trade cards that no longer fit my collecting focuses for all of them, and I even received some $$ in one of the trades. But then, I made the mistake of telling my wife, who came to Cleveland with me, how much I didn't spend of the $$ that I brought with me to the Show. She responded, "we'll now have more $$ to spend on our sightseeing trip to Michigan"! Following the Show, we toured around the "glove" of Michigan for a week, and we had lots of fun and the best vacation weather we have ever experienced.

Hank - Sorry I missed seeing you, and congrats on your pick-ups. I spent the first 1.5 days of my 2-day stay going around the show and making a list of what interested me, and I put Leland's 1924 Washington/WaJo "Pennant Winners" pin on my list, as the price seemed quite reasonable. When I returned on the afternoon of my 2nd day to buy it, I learned from a Leland's staffer that you had purchased it, which completely erased my initial disappointment.

Best to each of you,
Val

Hankphenom 08-12-2014 09:40 PM

Same to you, Val. I knew there had to be some luck involved for that pin to still be there when I happened by the Leland's booth! I did return the favor somewhat in advance by never pulling the trigger on Mark's Walter Fatima poster which I saw at in Cleveland and also previously at several Chantilly shows.

For those discussing the T227 set, here are the 4 baseball subjects. Bought the Cobb at the national last year. Sorry for the funky image sizes.

Wow - killer pick-ups. It was GREAT talking with you - thanks for all the great discussions, especially regarding 'The Glory of Their Times'. I could listen to that stuff all day. I put the first c.d. in the player on a dirt road between Scenic, S.D. and our campsite, and we listened to the set from the Badlands westward - David had never heard any of it, so it was a real treat to see his reaction. Perfect environment.

I feel very fortunate that none of my GOT letters sold at the National :)

Hankphenom 08-13-2014 11:56 AM

Great seeing your stuff, Scott, and talking GOTT, something I think the both of us could do all day. Hope to see you in Chicago next summer.

Josh - nice T227s!

I don't have a scan of my Baker on this computer (it's the only T227 baseball player I have), but it is one of my 4-5 favorite baseball cards of all time and is a center-piece of my collection - one of the cards that would be sold last if I ever had to sell.

Just back from grading....

A guy walks up to our table at the National and asks if I was interested in some old cards. I say, sure. He shows me several decent, raw cards and some that weren't so decent *(value-wise). The first one he had shown me was the one below. I had an interest :) and that first card he showed turned out to be the only one we made a deal on. He had a nice Cy Young portrait T206, but he wanted about retail for it; after an offer of mine wasn't enough.

I guess it was my best walk-in of the show. I go with low no expectations. I go for the proverbial camaraderie more than anything else. Buying, selling and or trading is just the icing on the cake.
