Honus has not moved in awhile...

Any thoughts on REA's Honus Wagner, sitting at a cool $950,000? Anyone think it will stop here? Go up some more? After all, its just money...

ullmandds 04-15-2015 12:07 PM

we all know that the action in most auctions is at the end.

Wags still has legs...and will sell for more like 1.5mil in my opinion.

Republicaninmass 04-15-2015 12:12 PM

"it" moved when I saw it

ZachS 04-15-2015 12:12 PM

This is the last bid at the $50K range... once it hits $1M the bid increment goes up to $100K.

BobbyVCP 04-15-2015 01:28 PM

I think the final price is going to be 1.4 M

darwinbulldog 04-15-2015 01:50 PM

I would say all the bidders are in now but not all of their bids.

Honus!

The suspense is killing me...
Not really, but kind of fun to watch

Bigb13 04-15-2015 04:05 PM

None of the big stuff has moved at all

ullmandds 04-15-2015 04:09 PM

Well a lot of the big stuff is already kind of expensive!

clydepepper 04-15-2015 04:12 PM

Yup, sorry, I've had some un-expected bills show up...guess I'll have to pass again...so close!

Bigb13 04-15-2015 04:18 PM

FYI - Hey, Everyone - I don't know who had 'April 15' in the 'Holy Donkey Shit' pool, but we do have a winner now!

Kudos Josh!

Honus Bonus

Honus has not moved in awhile...

Perhaps it does so when no one is looking...I know I have trained my Honus to remain perfectly calm while out in public.

Keep calm everyone. No movement.

You will be able to moderately increase your collection stats in your signature after these purchases.

Absolutely right on! Bids come out early, get fairly large, but can increase substantially near the end of the auction.

Best to all,

Larry

Neither have the Jackson or the Ruth. They are Saturday cards

iowadoc77 04-23-2015 05:27 AM

Saturday

Wish I owned more Saturday cards. Seem to have a lot of Tuesday and Wednesday cards, maybe a few Thursdays

Sadly, most of my cards are 11 weeks from last Tuesday.

Cards

Tom, that is HILARIOUS! I just look at that Honus, and sure it is cool and all, but let's see... could buy one heck of a house for that and have plenty left over for a nice car and tons of cards and still take some nice vacations... That's a lot of bank for a card, even if it is Honus.
Give me a Cracker Jack 1914 or 1915 Ty Cobb and Shoeless Joe and I'd be much happier anyway.
But it is fun to live vicariously through the bidders...

mark evans 04-23-2015 10:50 AM

I'm with Eric. When I win the Mega Millions tomorrow, I'll be focused on the CJ Jackson.

In the last few days, Babe did have a $10,000 movement.

...and I say, "Good for him! He probably really needed that!"

I agree. Poor Babe and Shoeless Joe and Ty Cobb for that matter, all amazing cards, but overshadowed by Mr Honus. If only I had several hundred thousand just sitting around, oh wait, I would still want a CJ Shoeless

mark evans 04-23-2015 11:51 AM

The '52 Topps Mantle is tempting as well.

ullmandds 04-23-2015 11:57 AM

I would much...much...much rather have an m101-6 ruth or a fred photo ruth over a 52 topps mickey mantle.

I know that Ruth cards have been escalating sharply the past couple years, but the Frederick Foto card currently at auction in REA sure was a great buy for someone back in 2011. The same card sold for $11,163 at REA four years ago. This time around, the minimum bid was $25,000 and the card is currently at $27,500.

Still no movement on most of the big ticket items.

Wish I could say the same for the lot that I am bidding on. It seems to go up every time I refresh the page. :(

ullmandds 04-24-2015 08:40 AM

yup...had one gotten in on a rare ruth card like the fred photo...or an m101-6 4-8 yrs ago...hefty returns are abound. Warranted I suppose?

ullmandds 04-24-2015 08:41 AM

I think the Wags will move...significantly...just a matter of time. The Ruth is pretty high...the Cobb/Cobb should sell for 120 or so I'd think.

iowadoc77 04-24-2015 11:35 AM

Wish I was better at speculation, as does everyone else. Kind of like Mack to the Future when Biff grabs the sports almanac from the future and dominates the wagering...

MVSNYC 04-24-2015 02:34 PM

REA is startin' to heat up a bit...under the recent bids page, a Satchel Paige contract shot from $5,500 to $17,000 within a 23 second span.

Leon 04-24-2015 05:19 PM

Honus just moved up a nice starter house in price......

This will be the first time in 3 years I haven't chased anything in that crazy auction. Would have chased a few, but either I have expensive taste in cards or all if it is very nice stuff

barrysloate 04-26-2015 04:33 AM

It's interesting that virtually all of the bidding on the Wagner took place the first day. In the last twenty two days there were only three bids, one which was a bump of a ceiling bid. And on the final day there were none. I don't quite understand it, but there must be a reason.

Jay Wolt 04-26-2015 06:41 AM

Barry, most of the bids the 1st day were bid as a goof, guys bidding in the $100-$200K range knowing
they had no chance of winning it.
Our buddy Sarno was high man at $110K, & even I was high man for a minute at $180K.
Would have got a 2nd mortgage & partners if I did land it at that, but wasn't the case.

Other bids could have been placed to scare away other bidders as the price point became higher & higher.
Still all in all it went for $1.32 million w/ the juice. I'm sure the consignor & REA are delighted & hopefully the winning bidder is too!
If not that's quite the buyers remorse he'll have.

The card that I was bidding on doubled in price the last day. It was hit and miss. The Wagner and some other cards went a little lower while othere went higher.

bosoxphan 04-26-2015 06:51 AM

1.3 is pretty healthy for a VG card. Think the last 3 was 1.2 a couple years ago.

iowadoc77 04-26-2015 07:14 AM

They can't continue to increase in price each and every auction or else everyone would be in on these auctions. Never a sure thing

The Wagner will.

bosoxphan 04-26-2015 07:47 AM

I wanna see what the 8 Wagner does now that it's doctoring is common knowledge

Bored5000 04-26-2015 08:20 AM

I had a a few bids in, but didn't win anything. I don't understand $3,600 (including the juice) for the heavily trimmed Jim Thorpe M101-5 when a decent one can be had in the $5,000 range. A similarly trimmed Thorpe sold for $1,000 at REA in 2011. I know it's not 2011 anymore, but $3,600 for that card seemed pretty strong, IMO.

I admit that I am not super well versed on modern cards, but $14K and $12K respectively for the artist's proofs of Bernie Carbo and Larry Bowa's 1971 Topps All-Star Rookie cards surprised me.

I had an early bid in on the Titus endorsed check, and thought about putting in another bid before I went to bed early Sunday morning. I actually thought it would go for more than the $540 (with the BP) closing price.

Jay- I know there were many placer bids at the low levels, but to reach 900K on the first day left little room for any other bidding. If the person who bid the 900K won the lot, then his strategy was a complete success. But if he didn't win it, then he accomplished nothing. I know plenty of lots did well at the end- look at the 1879 Chicago photograph and what it did after 4:00 AM. But the case of the Wagner was curious to me. We used to wait until the end to try and win something, not try to win it on the first day.

It depends on who is buying. How many collectors have 500K-2M to put into one card? If it is "investors buying, they are looking for a return. As soon as cards like t206 Wagner and 52T Mantle slow down, investors may look to take profit and the market correct.

iowadoc77 04-26-2015 10:45 AM

Time will tell

I was referencing cards in general. I think Wagner is an anomaly and very well may continue to climb
And I would certainly unload the 8 if I owned it

Stonepony 04-26-2015 10:50 AM

I feel the 1.3 is a bit of a disappointment. 20% below what I was guessing... but what do I know..
