Went to the auction of a Nebraska football "booster of substance" today. Game used jerseys and team signed footballs! (Lawrence Phillips including his locker room placard from the 1995 National Title game, Broderick Thomas, Johnny Mitchell, and Steve Taylor shown) got a couple of other jerseys and lots of signed stuff too.

A scorecard for a February 20, 1927 California Winter League contest at the integrated ball grounds of White Sox Park in Los Angeles in which the Philadelphia Royal Giants, an African American team with six Negro League Hall of Famers -- Turkey Stearnes, Bullet Rogan, Willie Wells, Andy Cooper, Biz Mackey, Bill Foster -- beat Hall of Famer Kiki Cuyler and his Shell Oil team by a score of 3-1. See the website below for more Negro League material.

I got this billhead in the mail Friday from a very nice Net54 member who sent it out of the blue to me. (Thanks Dave!) It goes well with the other Lawlor's stuff I've been collecting over the years.
|
Nice haul Dan. Used to root for Nebraska during Osborne's years. Glad he got himself a couple if championships.
|
Thanks, Clint!

Seldom seen Johnny Vander Meer 1940 Diamond Dust uncatalogued punchcard.
According to net54's own, seller Keith Javic: "Here is some information on this set: These colorful ribbed paper cards were the consolation prize from a punchboard, a popular gambling device of the Depression era. For 5 cents the customer would choose one of 624 holes and punch it out sometimes receiving these paper cards. The Diamond Dust cards are sometimes poorly cut and are roughly 1" by 1.75" in size. Backs have 2-5 printed numbers in red and black. It is said 15 of the players were $1 winners and likely made in shorter numbers. Any card redeemed would have been likely destroyed. To date there are 33 different players known" |

1991 Wally Joyner All Star bat
1990 Roberto Alomar game used bat. He ordered 12 of these on 11/20/90 and he used it when he arrived in Toronto, which explains the blue AL ink transfers. |

Picked this up recently out in PA. This is a smaller photo measuring 4 3/4 x 5 3/4, but I liked the contrast and subject matter. I really wish that 'back in the day', someone had written more info on the back.....it's blank.

Picked up this Cobb check to his mother in the Heritage auction.

Does this qualify as one of the stranger (but very cool) items posted in the pickup thread in a long time?

Picked up a couple of bats recently, the Miggy shows medium use. The Bench is from 1977 with nice use. The fact that the stampings are light meant I got it for less than half what others would cost.

Picked up this Walter Johnson game top and tokens at a local auction today. Nobody bid against me so I'm fairly certain I'm the only one there that knew what it was and that there were tokens inside the top.

Another holy grail item off the list!
3 Attachment(s)
Ever since I first saw one of these circa 1939 Johnny Vander Meer Goldsmith glove boxes in Carlton's epic pictorial of The National a few years ago, I've wanted one for my personal collection. The graphics and color really pop...
I finally pulled the trigger in today's Hunt Louisville Slugger Auction. The box also comes with a very nice AG65 Vander Meer endorsed glove (correct right handed mitt for a lefty hurler) and custom acrylic case for display. This will look great with my Vander Meer endorsed balls and 1939 Goldsmith catalogue featuring Vandy. I'm a happy camper today. Another neat item off my holy grail list! :D |
Awesome addition Scott! I love the graphics on that box.
|
Congrats Scott!! That box was destined for your collection. Can't imagine a better place for it to end up.

Scott, fantastic pick up, congrats!
I picked up two small things and missed out on the Pittsburgh Pirates bat fan. |

Thanks Mike, Joe & Bob!
Bob. I saw the 5th night game light bulb ticket in the auction. I'm glad you won it! I really love the look of these die cut tickets from this era. Here's my ticket from night game #1; Vandy's famous 2nd consecutive no-hitter. |
Great pin, Mike!
Ken - I had completely forgotten that Miggy played for, and won a WS with, the Marlins. Does anyone know why "Wilson" is on a SAM Bat? Dan - love the game. How is it played? and Scott - yet another great pickup for the #1 Vander Meer collector. |
Quote:
Sam Bat is not owned by Wilson. It was founded by Sam Holman in 1997 and was owned independently by him until 2007 when it became owned by four individuals, none of which have any association with Wilson. The confusion probably derives from a distribution deal Sam Bat had with Wilson some time ago, in which Wilson had their logo added to the bat, although Wilson never played any part in the ownership or manufacturing of the product. |

1923 Our Boys Magazine Ty Cobb Cover
2 Attachment(s)
Picked up my first Ty Cobb item - a 1923 Our Boys magazine with Ty Cobb on the cover! This was a sales magazine to encourage youth to sell other magazines from the Curtis Publishing catalog, including Country Gentleman, Ladies Home Journal, and The Saturday Evening Post, to name a few. Looks like Cobb really liked the outfit, given his testimonial (no doubt paid for), and given that he encouraged his own son to sell magazines too!

Picked up a nice early Stan Musial photo by George Dorrill.

Circa 1939 Johnny Vander Meer endorsed D & M baseball
2 Attachment(s)
What can I say? November has been a terrific month for pickups...
Vandy circa 1939 D & M endorsed baseball and original box pickup on eBay. I've been searching for one of these guys & it's been pretty elusive... Finding it with the box was a definite bonus. :) Here is the original ad from a 1939 Sporting Goods catalogue |
Awesome Scott I can't recall ever having such a month myself.

That elephant is very cool!!! Although it would probably be a cardinal sin, I'd be tempted to strip that paint.
|
The elephant is absolutely amazing! And I would not do a thing to change it. When you're 104 years old you are not supposed to look new!
|
The white paint is original to the piece I wouldn't touch it
|
Restore it
I'm a dissenter it would appear, I would have it restored, bet it would look amazing. Now he kind of looks like the Philadelphia Dalmations. Very cool item!
|
Great pickup, Kevin!

Thx for all the comments. This kind of stuff is what drives us all as collectors

Kevin that probably is lead paint so you might want to restore it for safety reasons, don't let your dog start licking it. I actually could see going either way on this type of item, I know some say never touch, which is true will turn off some, others will appreciate a nice restored piece....and the value goes up 3X. exhibit A http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=180572 |
