May Pick-Up Thread

Not really a new pickup but a new re-discovery. I am currently organizing my collection of Baltimore Orioles Team Issues and have owned this Brooks Robinson team issue for some time but never really paid attention to the postmark on back. I don't believe I have seen any other issues other than his Topps card that date to 1957. Obviously, this card features the same image that is found on his Topps card as well. Not the highest graded card of all time but I like the early Robinson signature as well.

A few of my April and May pickups. Been piecing together a mid grade 52 set. I was initially shopping raw lots, but it's made more sense to just buy graded lately due to pricing/grading wait times.

Love the Brooksie team issue. I’ve attached a pic of the back of one of mine. The name/address was all completed by Brooks just like yours. Great early autograph; love it!

Glad to see these postmarked and available in 1957. Mine’s postmarked in 1958. Wonder if they are all off center to the left?

Hi Clint,

You know we need to see your example as well... Is the name/address portion completed by Brooks on your example?

The examples I have seen as well as the few that I have are all off center. Also, the team issue photos I have aren’t in the greatest shape since they were sent through the mail. I don’t have an example in front of me, but I believe the next team issue photo of Brooks was also off center (for whatever reason). I think his middle name isn’t spelled correctly on that one either if I’m not mistaken.

Very cool! Really like that it was sent from KC during the time the O’s were playing there. Definitely in Brooks’ hand and very bold ball point pen. Can I please see the front as well?!?

Very nice looking autograph; nice and bold.

I’m with you that I’d like to find one not signed. I don’t have one and have only seen one over the years.

Thanks Mark. Huggins and Scott had one awhile back. That’s the only one I’ve seen not autographed.

This is a card I'm relatively sure nobody really cares about, but I am thrilled to get it and it's a companion piece to the #52 1972 Killebrew In Action card I posted last month. For set builders, it is virtually impossible to ever find a centered version of this Cleon and even harder still to find one without a noticeable tilt to it. This one does have the very slightest of a leftward lean, but it's still the closest thing to centered I've seen in quite some time...

My mother passed away on Sunday after battling a neurological illness for about a year. Despite the timeframe, it was super aggressive and she went from driving to almost totally debilitated in a period of not much more than 6 months. As a reminder of our happier times, I was able to pick this up yesterday at the LCS while running errands related to her service, and I guess I am thinking of this as kind of a final memory piece. Mom was the original supporter of my vintage card habit, buying me singles at now long-gone LCS’s in NC back in the late 1980’s. There was never a Ryan rookie, but there were plenty of Mantles. We had our ups and downs over the course of life like as in any family, but the happiest times I can remember as a kid were going to the baseball card shop with Mom...[emoji4][emoji17] I’m glad she’s finally getting the rest she deserves.

My condolences. May your mother rest in peace. Hope that Ryan rookie kindles happy memories every time you look at it. My Mom, gone 15 years now, was a similar supporter of my card-collecting habit.

Peter_Spaeth 05-08-2019 04:22 PM

My mom passed away 10+ years ago. Her contribution was throwing out my huge boxes of 60s and early 70s cards when I went to school.:) Later in life she was stunned to learn that cards had acquired so much value.

Some additional LCS pickups today. The Clemente is lower-grade, but well centered and the color really pops, so I went with it. I am not 100% sure, but think these are some of if not the first ‘63 Fleer’s I’ve ever owned.

Another toughie off my list. Corners only graded 3 which I think is pretty harsh. But I got it for the centering. Other grades are: centering 8.5; edges 7.5; surface 7.

+1

My mom saved my cards in the closet when I went to college. She passed in 2016. I once asked her why she didn't throw them away. She said something like even though you're a man, I wanted the little boy in you never to leave.

Thanks Lou. I really thought this would be one of the last two or three I’d need given the centering issues and cost of well-centered examples, but things worked out. I have been working on this set for a VERY long time so it’s nice to see patience rewarded!

About 15-17 years ago, I had one of these that probably would’ve been at least a 6, but was not smart enough to hang onto it. I have literally been kicking myself ever since. Righted the ship today with this example… Not in nearly the same technical condition, but it met my criteria at least for bright color, a crispy image, and the creases don’t really affect the eye-appeal that much. Welcome home, Splinter!

Ok, these aren't May pick ups, but I did just get them back from SGC. I knew they wouldn't grade better than vgex, but I was surprised by a couple of the grades nonetheless. They still have nice eye appeal IMO, though the centering isn't the greatest on a couple of them. The Mays has a little extra blob of factory ink on his cheek.

At one time, I wouldn't have given cards with these technical grades a second look. When I sent them in, I intended to sell them. However, when I got them back, I just couldn't sell them...and one is a duplicate for me!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2b7f4ead5f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e401e1a0fa.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d497932e64.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9ad59d9f6d.jpg

Thanks, John! I didn't expect to like the new SGC holders, but those cards look pretty good in there. None of them have any major issues, despite the technical grades. I have always felt SGC was consistent, but they seem to have tightened things up even more.

Because it's otherwise an 8, and PSA cuts those off at no worse 70/30. So apparently they did not judge the T/B centering on that card to be at least that good - looks like maybe 25/75 to me. I will agree it doesn't look bad at all, but the centering standards above about a PSA 6 just get tougher and tougher...which I suppose is the point.

I couldn't remember in your original post if you told me/knew about the sharpie mark?

I was hoping you weren't aware of it and was rather disappointed with the grade so I was going to offer to take it off your hands for about half of what you paid for it to help alleviate your anger. :D ;)

I've always gotten a kick out of that card since the 1st day I seen it. Although I know it is just the pose/pic, to me, he looks afraid/scared up there.

Very nice card, btw. Like quite a few 52 Topps cards, many are very difficult to find centered.

Thank you! Same here! Hard to be objective about Jackie cards, but now that I have it [emoji1787] I have to say it's his most attractive card! I also love the 1949 Bowman but any version I'd ever own wouldn't look too nice.

I understand. The coloring on those '55s is pretty hard to beat.

May Pick-Up Thread

An odd combo of LCS and antique store pickups this week. The T206 belongs in the prewar forum, but I’m being lazy, since I mostly post here. Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Nice card, Jason. I got rid of a '55 Jackie earlier this year - it was a BVG 4.5 - centered nicely, but corners were rougher for that grade than I think either PSA or SGC would have allowed. I don't regret selling it, but will definitely be looking to pickup another one in better shape at some point. One of the iconic cards of the 50's for sure. Jackie and that blue cap against the yellow background really pops!
