Let's see 'em! I'll start...another piece for my oddball A's collection. This is a Rob Nelson game used bat from 1986. Nelson was the guy who was supposed to be the big 1B prospect...until he got off to a slow start in '87 and they slid McGwire back over from third.

A K.C. Monarchs vs. House of David barnstorming ticket stub. It came in a lot of 1930s St. Paul Saints ticket stubs, so it could very well be from a game played at Lexington Park. So far, I've seen some references to them touring up here in 1934, but am still researching potential dates.

Picked up this cool Jim Rice bat. I think it is a pro model? But with someone else's number on the knob; so maybe a teammate? Minor Leagues?
And, a picked up this EPIC ticket from a good friend of mine. I am very excited to put that in the baseball case. |

Cooper bats were first used in the Majors in 1986. I check the Red Sox roster for Rice's remaining years. Spike Owen wore #5 in 1986, Brady Anderson and Randy Kutcher in 1988, and Kutcher again in 1989. You could look and see if any of those three had a history of using tape on bats. I actually thought Brady Anderson did some, but you would have to look into it. Here's a pic of him from 1988. Cool pick up and good luck! |
Thanks!
My buddy said the same thing; he thought it might have been Anderson.
I basically picked it up because (relatively speaking) it was super cheap, and I think it is the pro model Jim Rice. I briefly looked last night, and Brady did tape his bats, although I didn't see the same exact pattern. Something to do some research on for sure, when I get some time! |

This is an invitation to a dinner which honored Chuck Dressen. It was during the 1924 season, in which the St. Paul Saints won the Junior World Series. They even added a little poem to taunt the Minneapolis Millers :D

Picked up a number of fun smalls at the flea market this weekend. The mini-pennants are made by Keezer, the Astros bobblehead still has to be cleaned up, the Hoag card appears to be something from hobby icon Frank Nagy (maybe it doubles as a business card?).
The Salada coins include three HOFers and are in amazing condition, the golf painting is from 1946, the track spikes are very early, and that's the first Danny O'Connell store bat I can remember seeing. The basketball photo is a semi-pro team featuring college All-American Barry Kramer of NYU. Greg |

Way cool finds at the flea market

I had a rare afternoon off today; so I decided to drive down to the local indoor flea market/antique mall. Once, I scored an AWESOME UMaine baseball jersey, so I am always hopeful.
As I was browsing, I came across a box of old photos and RPPCs in the back of one of the booths. I happened to notice a baseball cap in the back, so I picked it up and started looking. And came up with GOLD!!! 1) I think it is a Brooklyn Dodgers player (don't know who?). 2) Same player, but now I believe that is Jackie in the background! 3) West Point RPPC. 4) Some kind of WWII plane. 5) This one looked like nothing, but was in with the WWII plane. Check out the inscription on the back!!! Is that the same Jimmie Doolittle who raided Tokyo?!?!?! 6) Some kind of gunslinger outlaw dude RPPC! I know, not sports, but the planes/outlaw guy just looked cool, so I thought I would share. |
Dodger is Gil Hodges. Doolittle is likely the same one.
|
Cobb
Congratulations, Bob! That is an outstanding example of “A Fan for a Fan” Cobb. One of the best pieces of ballpark memorabilia in existence, IMO. Add that to your Mathewson Tuxedo box and you’ve had an incredible last few weeks!

Just got these back from PSA. This is the first baseball game that I attended. My Mom and Dad took me for my 9th birthday. Both of them passed away 5 months apart recently and I dug these up and sent them to PSA. The cool thing is the seats are 16-17-18 in a row. They both were avid supporters of the hobby and I miss them dearly. My Dad was 94 and went to the National with me in Chicago a couple of years ago and attended the net54 banquet while we were there.Attachment 359350

The Brooklyn Dodgers player front and center in your snapshots is Gil Hodges. Can't say who the background player is. |

Its unusual for me to come across something from the 71 Pirates that I haven't seen before. Thanks to icollectDCsports for contacting me about this item. I appreciate the assist. Although it's not quite as beautiful as Bob's Cobb fan I am thrilled to add this ceramic bank to my collection.

Cobb Fan
Thank yo all for your nice comments.
One thing I have never understood about pieces like the Cobb Fan for A Fan is why these go for so little compared to the T206’s? The Cobb fan is far far rarer than any of the T206 cards? There are probably less than 10 known copies of the Cobb Fan yet it sells for just a fraction comparatively? I know I am biased to the memorabilia but this makes no sense to me personally. |
Mike - that thing is so ugly, it’s beautiful ;)
Bob - totally agree. That’s why I’m happy to be on the memorabilia side! |
Thanks Rob that comment is an apt description of my entire collection:D

I think it can simply be explained by the fact that many more people collect cards than Memorabilia. Can’t imagine any other reason than the sheer number of collectors vying for these things. I keep thinking that Memorabilia will soon surpass cards, in terms of value/desirability... but have thought that way for over 20 years. So I’m pretty sure it ain’t happening in our lifetimes. Good thing for us! |

1 Attachment(s)
Slowly migrating into collecting hockey. Very excited to add this one to the collection circa 1975-76 Ken Dryden game used stick. Stick has a blade crack, and a date 5/1/76 notated on the shaft. Potentially the date that the lucky fan recieved this treasure?
Very excited about the addition |
Quote:
When you say there is a date notated on the shaft.... Do you mean its handwritten? Or is it an ink stamp? |
Notation
The notation is 5/1/76, the ink stamp is oct 21 1975

1941 Briggs Stadium baseball...
1 Attachment(s)
I picked up this old OAL Reach baseball from a local antiques dealer. The inscription reads, "Briggs Stadium, May 4, 1941, Foul ball by Priddy of the Yankees, Tigers vs. NY Yankees, 7th foul ball hit by him that day."
I looked up the box score and the date matches up. The Tigers won 10-1 with Bobo Newsom getting the win. Joe DiMaggio hit a double and started his 56 game streak 11 days later. |

Kansas City Monarchs vs House of David full ticket.

This is where I found some details: "The House of David rented Wilkinson’s lighting system to play night games during the early months of their barnstorming season. In time the two teams developed a working relationship that included Thomas Baird doing the booking for both. Sometimes they coordinated barnstorming tours so first one team would route through a state, playing all the local teams, and then the other would follow along the same route. Since the Monarchs and the House of David had great baseball talent, both usually defeated the local teams. When the second team finished the route, they joined and worked their way back along the same route, playing each other." https://kchistory.org/blog/monarchs-...light-baseball |
I just picked it up at a show know nothing about it .

What a great month for pickups!
Great stuff everyone... I especially love the Orange Crush Sign, the Ty Cobb Fan and the Pirates Flannel. And Brock... that plaque is so cool. Usually these figural plaster plaques have chips/cracks, but yours looks amazing. I specifically look for this oddball stuff (and have done so for 3 decades). But have never seen that version. Super cool display piece and a GREAT find! |
Thanks Mark. If you’ve never seen one I know it must be super scarce. These little plaster and chalk ware pieces just didn’t hold up to the test of time I suppose.

I've been looking for an exceptional early glove for a while and my patience has paid off. Thanks to Tim Whitman for making this beautiful webless crescent pad glove available to me. Pictures don't do it justice. The leather is as soft as the day it was made. It measures about 8.5 x 8 in.
|
Gary, glad you found one you like. You have checking some boxes lately.

I couldn't help but think the same thing to be honest. The KC Monarchs lighting system was fairly advanced for the day but nothing compared to today's lights.

that is a GREAT item. But I'm pretty sure that it does not say that it is a foul ball. It says that it was a fowl ball. Maybe it hit a bird in mid-flight? |
Really out of my collecting world...and so I have very little knowledge on these...but had to have these two being it was the Braves franchise.

HOF Jim Palmer no-hitter full ticket
2 Attachment(s)
I'm very happy that I was able to recently upgrade my HOF Jim Palmer no-hit ticket from 8/13/69 @ Baltimore. :)
Any ticket to this game is exceedingly scarce. This full ticket to Palmer's no-hitter is the only one that I have ever seen in 45 years of collecting the theme. As per my usual routine, I played "free Willie" and de-slabbed this beauty! |
Awesome ticket Scott!

This roll of 500 stickers appears to have been used in the manufacturing of the 1971 Three Rivers Stadium models. However, the text on the stickers differs from that on the models I have seen. I thought there were three variations of the scoreboard now it appears that there is a version with the Pittsburgh Pirates text on the infield. I know it's silly but now I will be searching for one of those.

That monument is placed near a major intersection in Hoboken, and each corner has a large stone "base" in the sidewalk. It's pretty cool. Side note- the monument is not on the exact spot of the first game...that's about 1000 feet closer to the waterfront (right under Maxwell Place), where I used to live. |
