Love of the Game Auction How did you do

Good Morning Everyone

A very long night for some of us with the Love of the Game Auction

Just curious how did you do?

Any surprises in your opinion on things that went higher or lower than you thought in price?

Show what you won

Schlesinj 08-29-2021 06:57 AM

I was the underbidder on a raw 1927 WS game 1 ticket stub which I need to complete the 1927 WS run. It went for $3,250. I am kicking myself I did not win slabbed version a year ago for $1,400 range also on LOG.

tennisguy 08-29-2021 07:11 AM

Wow! Strong prices across the board. Congrats to the winners and to Al!

mrreality68 08-29-2021 07:16 AM

Strong prices

I agree

Just late night/morning

Placed my last bid at 329 am

Bicem 08-29-2021 07:22 AM

1919 Sox postcard Jeff? :)

Bliggity 08-29-2021 07:45 AM

I was hoping to pick up a bunch of the T207 tough backs, but it looks like I was the underbidder on a half-dozen on them. :( I did pick up the Bender and McGraw, and a T200.

Leon 08-29-2021 07:53 AM

In looking at the items and prices realized I think this might have been Big Al's best auction. Congrats to him, the consignors and the lucky winners. I struck out on the lots I was interested in.

Super happy with the prices realized on my consignments, great Cracker Jack's, made a run at the Alexander but bowed out at the end.
Picked up the Cobb/Wagner PC796.

Congratulations Al, for a great auction.

Kidnapped18 08-29-2021 08:51 AM

Agreed very long night

I was able to place the last bid in the auction at 03:30A and picked up the 1914 Cracker Jack Crandall

mrreality68 08-29-2021 09:11 AM

This was my other pickup and my first Christy card for my collection

i was screwing around :D with the '25 Gehrig RC...couldnt resist the low price around 7pm near 8k...then woke up this morning to see it end at 18k.

yanksfan09 08-29-2021 09:47 AM

Agree , strong prices on most everything I was looking at. Think I ended as underbidder on the mantle 1951 rc. Ruth stuff was strong! And postcards!

Really great selection and strong prices. I’m hoping I’ll add something cool in Fall.

hcv123 08-29-2021 09:54 AM

VERY strong prices!

Even on not so "big name" stuff! For a market that is supposedly "softened", you wouldn't know it from looking at REA and LOTG finishes!

I was after a few 1914 CJ's and T207 Carey for the team sets my kids and I are working on. The mid grade CJ's went considerably higher than I expected as did the SGC 6 Carey. I ended up winning the 2.5 Carey and PSA 2 CJ Adams.

pete zouras 08-29-2021 10:18 AM

Had bids on several

but ended up with just one--t207 speaker

Was happy with my bounty. Got the 1941 Play Ball Greenberg for the PC and the 67 Seaver for inventory

Belfast1933 08-29-2021 12:27 PM

First timer, thx Al!

Although I missed out on all of Foxxy choices (33 Delong, 41 Playball or 33 Tattoo orbit) I connected with Al who was super patient with my rookie auction questions - I’ll be ready next time

Thx Al - and congrats to the winners. Sadly, back to EBay for me 😬

Jeff

Yoda 08-29-2021 12:41 PM

Was more than a little delighted with the results of my consignments. Al continues to run one of the most profession and honest auctions in the hobby, and I will to continue to favor him with the bulk of my cards for sale.
On the other side of the equation, I was fortunate enough to pick up: the Yum Yum Dealsey, the Berk Ross Jackie, E94 Cicotte, '50 Bowman Williams and the Wilson Franks Williams.
Thanks, Al, for yet another great auction.

Dan, congrats on the McGraw, looks like we were bidding each other up. I also struck out on all the more rare t207 backs. I ended up adding another T200 and was excited to snag another tough t210 Winchester to add to the collection.

Yoda: I was your competitor on the Wilson Frank Ted Williams. It's a dandy of a card and the grade was in my stratosphere. Bailed before it got crazy expensive. Congrats. The card is gold.

Jeff: The T210 Goostree was my lone consignment. It's a cool card. Am glad it found a home with the other Winchester players.

Does anyone know why the 1968 Topps Cello pack with Nolan Ryan on the top was pulled from the auction?

jeffmohler 08-29-2021 03:19 PM

I consigned the Dietsche Cubs and was very pleased with the results. Was shocked at the final on the PSA 5 Moran!

That's a very cool Star Trek 35th Shatner-Nimoy card! Don't look now, but some of the auto and sketchfx cards from that set can get kind of pricey. Yours is awesome. If I didn't have these, I would be darned envious! I got the Joanne Linville (Romulan Commander) at Comic-Con in San Diego a few years ago. My Shatner-Nimoy plaque I got at Tate's Comics in Ft Lauderdale. Nice pick-up sir!

Thanks James! Yours are so cool! It’s fun that this hobby can extend into so many different areas. I’m a huge baseball fan and card collector of the vintage stuff but certainly enjoy some of the entertainment industry items as well. I’ve been watching Star Trek since I was a little kid and I’m glad that these cards are available for me to enjoy. So happy to pick this up.

I went for (and won) the near set of 34 Goudey.
It fit nicely since I have most of the cards it was missing.

My other bids were not even close, but that’s okay… a strong auction is generally good for all of us on this board!;)

2 wins for me including the boston store Marquard PSA 7 and another that really moves one of my sets a ton! Missed out on a few that fell to the side because of the other wins but can't wait to get the invoice so I can pay and get the cards!!

Congrats to all!

No wins here , price were strong. Dietsche Cobb Batting PSA 2 for over $ 10K. I sold one with a higher grade before the big price increases for under $2k not that long ago. Ouch !

Phil, wonder if the CJ Alexander was so strong because many thought it was his rookie card, when we know it is the T222 with that great pitching pose. The Speaker was also gangbusters. What a terrific card.

The Alexander is a tough card especially in good condition and a key card in the set, I think there were a couple of set builders that needed that card.

JimC 08-30-2021 10:43 AM

Troy I think I was your under bidder on the Boston Store Rube. I got the Rixey but would love to have scored Rube and that sweet Roush card too. That Marquard was just a beauty. Congrats!

What am I missing? Weren’t his T222 and CJ both issued in 1914?

Agreed the 1914 CJ Alexander will always be a tough card and carry a significant premium lots of collectors would like to add one to their collections

Yes both are 1914 cards...Old Pete made his MLB debut in 1911

I know he has Tom Barker/National Game cards from 1913 also

The 1914 CJ will always bring strong prices in any grade

Two things you should never mention on a first date are Star Trek and baseball card collecting. Found that out the hard way...

Spock is the patron saint of Aspergers folks like me and my daughter.

On one occasion my wife (who is neurotypical) was in a snit and blurted out that living with my daughter and me is like living with two Vulcans. My daughter said "She's highly illogical. Why did you marry her?" I replied "It seemed like the logical thing to do at the time." My wife was not amused...Humans, am I right?

At my brother's wedding, I concluded my toast with "live long and prosper," to mixed reviews.

nolemmings 08-31-2021 02:19 PM

I remember long ago when I was trying my hand at fixing the garbage disposal and my then wife and very little girl were growing impatient. Paraphrasing Scotty I pulled out my best brogue and said " I can't change the laws of physics, I've got to have twenty minutes". The wife's eyes rolled and the daughter looked genuinely concerned about me.

Carter08 08-31-2021 03:08 PM

Seeing those Star Trek cards just opened up another rabbit hole for me. Beautiful cards. Speaking of rabbit holes, I picked up the 48 Leaf lot on LOTG.

Exhibitman 08-31-2021 03:08 PM

Dan: thanks. Two big wants off my want list.

Peter: At a friend's wedding the court of which I was part were all sci fi geeks and we ended the ceremony with a Klingon salute. That crowd loved it.

Todd: I often have the same experience with my wife when I quote the wisdom of Spock, Kirk or Scotty. Speaking of brogues, when fixing something I always go with the Brogan Adjustment. Our super in the apartment building where I grew up was Irish and had a heavy shoe with his tools. When something didn't quite fit he'd hammer it with his shoe (brogan) a few times and knock it into place. He told me it was a Brogan Adjustment. My wife is a native Californian and had never heard of that I guess, so the first time I pulled off my shoe and whacked a piece of IKEA furniture into square while doing my best Irish brogue she had quite a laugh.

When we were in college one of the many get-rich-quick schemes we dreamed up (but never did) was a doorbell that, when pushed, would have Bones' voice saying "Dammit, I'm a doctor, not a doorbell..."

LOL. One of my favorites along those lines was I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer.

My best story along those lines happened with a date at the movies watching "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." She sat stone-faced through most of it while I was flailing around in my seat with laughter, then announced during the "Black Knight" scene that she was leaving. If she hadn't also been a friend and co-worker, I probably would have just let her go. "None shall pass!" indeed. Had a similar experience watching "Dr. Strangelove" with a lady, who didn't see the humor in a single second of it. Good lessons in how different from one another we can be in our perceptions and tastes.

You can add Bob Dylan--the GOAT in my book--to that list. Near-universal scorn from the ladies in my experience, and rightly so if you are listening to the words.
I doubt many guys are big fans of Alanis Morissette, either.

I'd happily see Alanis Morissette any night of the week live over Bob Dylan. She just played in NJ to rave reviews. Dylan is great live if you want to hear 2.5 hours of a guy "singing" through his nose with his back turned to the audience.

The great thing about Steely Dan was that often their lyrics didn't make much sense -- inside references or Fagan riffing on nothing -- yet somehow they made perfect sense. Same with the (IMO) very underrated folk rock group America.
