Rare As F**k Modern (post-1980) Boxing
Let's kick around some rarities from the modern era, besides the 'rainbow' of ultra-modern limited edition cards.
1991 Kayo Signature Series Kayo boxes and packs advertise autographed cards. TCDB has images of the following: 014 Charles Williams 015 Meldrick Taylor 089 Donovan Ruddick 180 James Toney It also lists 190 Carlos Palomino but the photo is of a regular card. Jeff Allender's checklist site also lists the Palomino but without a picture. Not sure if the card actually exists. Please post a pic if you have one. I have developed my doubts given that the others were all active at the time. There is also an unsigned Pernell Whitaker known. The year before I published my last guide, signed cards of Prince Charles Williams and James Toney both surfaced (at the time, 3 copies of Williams, 2 of Toney). I scooped up 2 of the Williams cards and one of the Toney cards at the time. I've since sold one of the Williams cards but still have a Williams and a Toney. I am not sure whether the Williams that sold on eBay last week is part of the recycled find. https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...ure%20Card.jpghttps://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...rd%20Toney.jpg 2016 The Greatest Boxing Ringwalk Songs An interesting UK set icreated as a promotion of a CD compilation of music. The company selling the CDs, Split Records, advertised a free set of cards with online purchases, while supplies last. My guesstimate is that the print run was well south of 200 sets. As far as I can tell, PSA has never graded one. These were gobbled up fast and never seem to surface. Fantastic checklist of fighters at the time and even one of Brad Pitt as Mickey, the Gypsy champion bareknuckles boxer, in the Guy Richie film Snatch. Speaking of Gypsy fighters, the set also has the first card of Tyson Fury. https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...20Pacquiao.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...lks%20Fury.jpg |

Wonder what i saw?
Any chance you have a checklist on the Ringwalk Songs set? |

I'd have to type one... |
FYI, The Ringwalk set was a promotional give-a-way item distributed to 50 media outlets (radio stations, social media, websites, online stores). The outlets held drawings/contests to determine the winners. Most were UK-based businesses. Most were given two CD's, each with the card set, some only one. Traces of press releases of the the promotion can be found on the web or Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.
I personally haven't seen any indication the set was initially available with an online purchase. (I had checked Wingwalk's website and the record label when the CD was first released, but perhaps I missed the offer, if there was one) |
It is also noteable that the Ringwalk set was produced by Top Trumps, a major game card company in the UK.
Initially, I thought a mass produced (or limited edition) set would probably be produced, which never happened. |

Here is an image my set. I'll try to make a list when I get the chance.

Ringwalk checklist:
Tyson Fury Muhammid Ali Manny Pacquiao Mike Tyson Lennox Lewis Deontay Wilder Nigel Benn Carl Froch Dereck Chisora David Price George Groves Ricky Hatton David Haye Scott Quigg Tony Bellew Micky Ward Callum Smith Neven Pajkic Naseem Hamed Mickey O'Neill Brandon Rios Paul Smith David Allen Hughie Fury Chris Eubank Amir Khan Mikkel Kessler |
Thanks.
I wonder what the set is worth? |

Really good question...

Not a single sale. |
I am kind of surprised, but not. My guess is that a considerable number of people who won these card sets weren't collectors and tossed them aside without any consideration. The lack of history on sales probably exacerbates the situation: a non-collector who runs a search on them and finds nothing may well assume that they are nothing and toss them back in the junk box.
Someone is going to have to do the work to get the cards into PSA holders, and then to get some of them into PSA registry sets, and then be the first to sell. Once that happens it should flush some of them out of the woodwork. |
None at PSA, yet.
I will probably eventually get my set slabbed. |

Back to the 90's "Autographed" releases. :D
I just noticed this sticker on the front of some of my 1991 "Ringlords" sets. In addition to confirming how incredibly over-produced they were (if indeed they did actually print that many), it also confirms the crazy low odds of pulling an Autographed card from one of the sets. 1 per 333 "sets", which retailed for about $15-$20 when they first came out. Not sure I've seen a legitimate factory autographed card of these either. TCBD has an autographed Holyfield listed that is numbered to 150 in Gold sharpie, but I'm not convinced that's not from an after-market signing (if real to begin with), since bulk lots of these are not hard to come by. https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/si...ld?PageIndex=1 These were also released in little cello packs in the U.K., though I see no evidence of any autographed chase cards offered in those packs, based on the header cards of the packs I have. Also, I'm not clear if only the sets with the "Special Offer" sticker on it were part of the autograph release, or ALL the sets that don't also have that sticker are part of the release. Either way there's still tons of sealed sets out there that have never been opened, lowering the known population (if there is one) to much less than 900. |
I once pulled an odd card out of one of the Ringlords promo cello packs (UK?). At the time, I didn't think much of it at the time. I thought maybe it was a miscut or some type of printing error. All I can recall is that the back was different from the other cards (vertical text, I think, with maybe an oval design element. I don't think it was numbered.). From memory, I can't match the back to any cards from either the UK or US set, including promos and sales samples. Perhaps it was a Signet card, but I don't think it had mail-in instructions. I still have it, but I doubt I could locate it.
Update: I might have bought it out of a dollar bin. I really can't remember exactly. I remember seeing the promo packs for sale at the place I bought it from. |

Oh wow, I missed the whole “redeemable” portion of the sticker. Guess there weren’t ANY actual signed cards to pull in the sets or the packs. :( |
I guess the question now is……anybody have an actual redemption card at least?

Thanks for posting that. Neat that all the pieces regarding the redemption were kept together. Especially since at quick glance it seems there’s nothing about the card itself, that seems any different from a standard issue card, outside of the autograph. More questions raised that I don’t have time to go into right now, but may circle back on later. |

I thought this listing was neat as it shows the redemption card (which sure seems easy to fake and send in multiples). Also, interesting that it is for just a random card and has no information as to subject.

I came across a print ad for the boxed 1991 Ringlords set.
It shows the fronts (4 are partial images) for 5 of the 7 autograph cards: - Michael Moore - Evander Holyfield 150 cards (not serial numbered) - Tommy Morrison - Donovan Ruddock - Virgil Hill FYI, the numbers on the Holyfield card refer to Bible verse Philippians 4:13 - "I can do all things through him who strengthens me" 900 total autograph cards (900 Signet redemption cards). 300,000 boxed sets produced. What are the other 2 auto cards? |

I also have the Pernell Whitaker Kayo Red Border signature card that was created but never distributed.
Unsure how many of these actually exist but this was likely a protoype as you'll notice the weight class is missing on the back of the card. |
That Norris is awesome, exciting to see a new one. I believe this makes the provable checklist, surely incomplete:
14 Charles Williams 15 Meldrick Taylor 20 Terry Norris 80 Pernell Whitaker (Not actually signed) 89 Donovan Ruddock 180 James Toney 190 Carlos Palomino Would be great to find some documentation from the publisher about what was going on with these. |

How about a game card of the Klitschko Brothers, Vitali and Wladimir. Technically, a wrestling card, but they must have been in the audience at a WWE event at one time.
I sold one for about $15 to an overseas buyer about 15 years ago, and haven't seen another one since, until one showed up yesterday with some cards I had packed away. |

2012 Tecate Pacquiao vs. Marquez https://img.comc.com/i/Boxing/2012/T...&size=original |
A fight promo. Here is what the other side looks like:
https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...quez%204_1.jpg Tecate made a few for Pacquiao's fights, including this die-cut beauty: https://photos.imageevent.com/exhibi...r-Pacquiao.jpg |

For such a high level boxer, Marquez seems to have remarkably few cards out there. Only guy that ever really dominated him was Mayweather, and to be fair, he wasn't really in Mayweather's weight class when he fought him. He gave Manny absolute hell for 4 fights, and completely sparked Manny out in the 4th fight, after Manny broke his nose. He was 39 years old (Manny was 33). He's a HOF'er, but otherwise he seems to be mostly forgotten, not long after his career ended. |
Do you know how they were distributed?

I do not.

Update on the Kayos. I listed my Toney for sale and it shot out the door in a few hours. The Williams is listed on eBay.

Any thoughts on the Boxing Ringwalk cards being continually listed on ebay by the same seller?
The listings includes a Donald Trump card that should NOT be part of the set. (song is not on CD, won election AFTER the set was released). Unknown card before the seller started listing the cards. I'm not aware of any 2nd printing of the ultra-rare original set that was only released by only 1 or 2 copies given to 50 different media organizations for free give-a-ways. (maybe 75-100 sets produced) |
Buyer beware on the Ringwalk cards being listed. The Donald Trump card is suspicious. Maybe a 2nd printing of some type, but no info from the company. Strange that only one person has these, and has a quantity as well.
|
Phony as a three-dollar bill. As are the rest of the Ringwalk cards being sold by that seller. Here is a genuine (mine) Mickey Ward:
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/7F0AA...6Y/s-l500.webp Here is the Ward that this seller is offering: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/XzYAA...g/s-l1600.webp 2nd generation print. The lack of clarity in Ward's image and the oversized borders are the telltale signs. These auctions are going to hurt a lot of collectors, IMO. |
I figured they were fake. The "new" Donald Trump card was a tip-off.
The pure white borders/background is also a give-a-way that they are fakes. Some buyers have paid big money for some of the cards. |
The red ink is a lot darker on the fake Ward card.
|
The Rocky Balboa card being listed wasn't part of the original set, as well.
I hope none of these get past the grading companies. |
Did anyone notice the seller name? Garbage Archive. You can’t make this stuff up.
|
Someone paid $1525 for a fake Tyson Fury at the end of August.
|
Ouch…
|
This latest fake went for $297.
Five of the Fury cards have sold in the last 90 days from this same seller at progressively lower prices. Does it really seem likely that Garbage Archive had five or more sets of these cards? Wanna bet on whether more are offered in coming weeks until he destroys the market? |
I'd guess he will continually list as long as there are buyers.
Mike Tyson sold for $5.50, and Ali sold for $1.25, so I think buyers are starting to realize these are fake. |
Mr. Garbage has yet another run of cards up for sale, this time as BINS. So far, he's sold through five sets of these alleged cards. Killed the market in the process.
My concern is that ignorant slabbers are going to authenticate them and the cards will then end up on the secondary market again as high grade (fake) cards. I've taken down the two genuine cards I had for sale. No point in trying when there are so many cheap fakes in the price history now. I know at least two of the TPGs have personnel who read this board. Guys, please warn your staff about these cards. I can provide scans of genuine cards for reference. |
Ringwalk fakes
Damn, I've never had any of these Ringwalk cards, but this is gross.
You want to make a fantasy set. Fine! Boxing fans aren't picky when there's not a lot to choose from. I'm am very annoyed when those are purposefully mis-dated to make them seem like "Rookie" cards, when they are decades away from being so...fantasy or not. This is another level. Purposefully designed after a well known modern rare set. A combination of forgery and fantasy with the extra subjects thrown in, just to rub it in everybody's face. Some of the "Sold" prices are insane. Hell, I'd have thought they were insane if they weren't counterfeit...but what the hell would I know. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_dkr...lete=1&_sop=16 Pretty sickening! |
Interesting. Stumbled across this. Conned somebody into a Private Sale of a "Full Set" of fakes, just a couple weeks ago.

Their songs don't even appear on the CD that the cards promote. |
I just compared the original set, to the set recently sold on ebay.
The recently sold set has cards of Donald Trump, Rocky Balboa, Carl Frampton, and Anthony Joshua. All four card weren't previously checklisted. I can't find any reference that any of these 4 cards existed before the seller recently started listed them. Anyone else have an original set to compare? (I think 2 or 3 sets were split up for ebay maybe a year or two after the set came out) |

I took a look at this seller's eBay page. I don't know anything about fake boxing cards; however, images like this leave me less than inspired.
If something in my house looked like that, I'd scrub my hands after throwing it away. Maybe vintage food collectors aren't quite as OCD as me. |
Looks like the Ringwalk cards are legit.
Seller posted this video 4 years ago, showing him opening a package which included what looks like 7 or 8 CD's, and I assume the same number of sets (shipped loose, wrapped in rubber bands). Maybe the record company or Top Trumps Company had extra stock(?) of the CD's/sets, and they eventually made it to the secondary market. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMEKY0Xogmo |

If it is a re-issue, there might be slight changes in the graphics/colors/stock noticeable with the cards in hand. |

After some digging, Rocky Balboa/Carl Frampton/Anthony Joshua were part of the original set.
Still can't find a reference to Trump, but I'd guess he was in the set as well. If you ordered the CD direct from the record company (Split Records), they would include cards with the order (not sure if they sent full sets) There was also a card of Paddy Considine. Paddy received the cards to give away. I think it may have been extra to the set, and not distributed with the other cards (the ebay seller hasn't listed it) |
I'm betting on reissue or reprint. Trump doesn't make sense. The CD and cards were issued shortly after the 2016 election. Not enough time to generate a card. A year or two later, sure.
I just have to wonder why there were no cards offered for sale for so many years, then suddenly these appear. Are there more caches out there or are these like the lot of red bordered 1991 Kayos that popped up a few years ago? Regardless, he's flooded the market for the set for the foreseeable future. |
It would be interesting to see an older version and one of his, in hand, to see if the colors are really that different next to each other, or if it's just the contrast turned up on his scanner.
It didn't register to me at first that this was a Top Trumps issue. They are a big toy company, and it doesn't make much sense for this run to be so limited. I know from collecting various Top Trumps and Top Trumps type F1 and other sports sets through the years, I've always suspected some of their print runs extended beyond a single year. I take back my forgery/counterfeit speculation...I think it's either leaning towards "not as rare as initially thought"...or re-issue/multiple print runs. |
Quote:
Well his unboxing looks to be in 2021, and they were thrown in there loosely, almost as promos. Probably a later creation. |
