Congrats on the E107 Delahanty. What a great looking card!

Congrats on a great card! The Brockleman Auction was fun last night, although I was swimming at a different end of the pool than were you. Great selection of offerings.

Memory Lane pickup
1 of 2 known. Not exactly your typical Ruth Fortunate to add this to my collection |
Butch Schmidt completes the Subset
2 Attachment(s)
I have been chasing this card for quite some time. Old Butch Schmidt was the last card I needed to complete the 14 member Boston Braves Cracker Jack subset. Looking on eBay and there he was. Was able to buy direct from seller, the colors on this one are great …nice deep red!
|
Wow, Jeff! Apparently you really wanted that one.
|
Awesome Ruth Jeff!
Will look great in your collection! |

Thank you, Dean. I actually just recently re-slabbed the T206 Christy Mathewson you sold me and am very happy with how it looks its new case.
|
Looks great Elliot. I definitely need to get some re-slabbed as well.

Great pickups everyone. Love the Ruth, Delahanty, Cobb and Mathewson. Here is a Pathe Freres Babe Ruth I recently picked up from Heritage. Appreciate everyone's research on this one, which has made this card less and less affordable. :)

Would be great to put them together and match them up with my card |
I wonder what the value of a hard-copy example of those ads would be. $5,000? $10,000?

First time, I’ve added a card in this type condition to my collection. It however very rarely comes up and one of the rarest of the set I’m collecting. I’m ecstatic to have it!
|
Some amazing pickups already this month. The e107 Delahanty is amazing, and Jeff, your Ruth is perfect for your collection. Congrats all
|
Josh- nice bread!
I was stoked when I got my -portrait last month Greg Morris had a bunch end the other night |
Always enjoy the monthly pick up threads but June (only 3 days in) has been particularly awesome. Great E107 Jackie Bond and beautiful Ruth items. Congrats to all, Ruth Freres my favorite image of the Babe.

Here are 3 CJ’s and a 1906 Hooks Wiltse Fan Craze.
I have several images of Hooks I have collected over the years, in many, he has this “haunting gaze”( see last two photos to compare to new Fan Craze card). |

Meanwhile, searching Google, I found this actual foil wrapper. This whole thing is one of the most fascinating Babe Ruth-related things I have ever seen. Jeff, your postcard absolutely amazing! |

I saw this and you directed me to eBay and now it is mine to put together with the card Now I have the card and the paper with the advertisement Thank you so much |

Haha, like my pops used to say "if you're gonna be a Bear, be a Grizzly". Strong move out of the gate Ryan, awesome pick ups and best wishes on your new focus. - |
It's a shame you haven't been able to pick up any cool ones...
|
Ryan, outstanding tickets! Really happy you’re starting to collect them. I love tickets, they tell stories and have so much history. The Mantle Debut is a beast.

Looked at tickets but have not gotten into them yet |
Thanks all.
I agree totally Mike, about the stories/history. |

Happy to pick up a Blue Crofts for the type collection. - |
Purchased in May, but didn’t arrive until yesterday

May was a good month, picking up four cards and getting the number of missing cards to complete a set down to an even 100. I’ve updated the wish list in the post on the B/S/T thread and posted images of several I know exist but I don’t have.
Thanks to everyone on the board for your help in making this all possible. |
Joe Massaguer
1 Attachment(s)
Very happy to have picked this up. It is a 1928 Aguilitas Cuba Deportiva card of sports writer Joe Massaguer. The only known example. Joe was one of Cuba's best sports writers during the first half of the 20th Century. For his contribution to covering and promoting Cuban baseball he was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame.

Mathewson Gum Ball box!
3 Attachment(s)
I was able to pick up this awesome Christy Mathewson “Fadeaway” Gum Ball Box with original gumballs! My Matty collection keeps growing and I love unique items like this!

Great piece Cody, congrats. - |

It's a cool box Cody congrats on the pickup! I've been after one but always roll my eyes when it's advertised as original gumballs. I have yet to see one sold that has gum that actually looks like the balls that are on the box:rolleyes:

1) You can currently buy identical gumballs(google baseball gumballs) 2) So many of these 100+ years old boxes still contain "original gum". Seriously what are the odds?? 3) In my opinion the phrases on the contained gumballs just doesn't fit. The phrases lead me to believe they would have originally been in a machine where it would be a suprise of which ball you would get. If you get "fly out" or "strike out" out of a machine you will keep putting coins in until you get a "home run" ball! Who in their right mind is going to choose anything other than "home run" when you can choose your own gumball?;) ......I vote not original |
Thanks mr ruth-gehrig ! Very interesting

Gum Balls
This piece was originally part of the Al Tapper collections sold by SCP auctions in 2021 along with several other unique items of his. While we can never be 100% sure of the claims that the gum balls are original to the piece, I’m guessing that some research had gone into them along the way to keep them with the box in such a prestigious collection. While there are modern gum balls sold with the same print, someone would have had to go to painstaking lengths to artificially age and show proper deterioration to them for the sake of display. The boxes sell in similar price ranges with or without the gum balls, so I guess I’m not sure what would be the point as it doesn’t really add to the value that much, if at all. The white has yellowed on them and many show degradation to varying degrees. So the original auction from the original collector lists as original, so I’ll take them on their word and they definitely pass the eye test as I’ve picked through a couple to read what ones were included. I was more excited by the box rather than the candy.

Only one way to tell Cody, pop one of those old-timey gumballs in your mouth, bite down hard, and see if you lose a tooth. - |
Anything is possible - they certainly look old and there’s some messed up print on some of them - irregardless it’s a terrific piece !

I think it presents pretty well for a PSA 2. |
