52 Topps Maxwell

Why is the 52 Topps Charlie Maxwell harder to find than other cards in that series? Was that one short printed?

Bigdaddy 05-09-2021 09:42 PM

Charlie is one of five that I need to complete the third series.

The third series is 60 cards, printed 100 per sheet. Forty of those cards were double printed and 20 were single printed. I assume he was one of the single printed cards, but there were 19 others, so he should be just as plentiful as those 19 and half as plentiful as the 40 double prints. I have not seen a breakdown of which cards were SP and which were DP.

I don't think he is harder to find than some others but I have noticed lately with a lot of players, some just don't pop up quite as often as others for whatever reason?
I just did a very quick ebay search of his card and 3 popped up. Not sure the condition nor the price you want to pay, but there they were.

Thanks, all. Yes, you can find him but he’s less plentiful and much more expensive than the others in that series. I just wasn’t sure why.

Charley has always carried a bit of a premium due to his popularity. When I was trying to find a copy of his, I noticed the above average price for his card too, and like you, asked here and found out the reasons why.

I'm not sure, however, if his name is spelt Charley, Charlie or if he preferred Charles?

1952 TOPPS Series #3 cards......

I have always found cards #171 - 180 tougher to find with respect to other cards in this Series (#131 - 190).
And, especially the GRAY backs. For example......

Having said all that....currently, there are about 14 cards of Charlie Maxwell listed on Ebay.

I always thought it was the 180-189 that were printed less. It seems those are harder to find, least in the gray backs.

Maxwell I believe was the edge of the sheet, making it tougher to find centered

Ted

I noted above, Charley Maxwell is on the same row as Billy Martin (cards # 171 - 180). My years of experience
collecting and dealing 1952 TOPPS cards tells me these 10 cards were Single-Printed.

Also, you may be correct that the last row of 10 cards in this Series (numbered 181 - 190) were Single-Printed.

Point taken, IF johnson was the last card, which we know he is 190, #180 maxwell has to be the last as well. Maybe its those 2 rows were printed less

Thanks for the discussion on this, guys. I love this type of stuff.

There's most likely an A Slit and a B Slit for all 1952 Topps series, with differing arrays. If so, this probably resulted in 20 overprints across all 200 cards in the third series press run. Maxwell has a pretty high PSA pop compared to other commons in his 10 card row but sometimes that indicates popularity vs any kind of SP or XP.
