Freshly graded - What percentage truly are?
 

There seem to be endless supplies of "freshly graded" pre-war cards hitting the market. Some are reholders, some are doctored (as we know), and maybe some are truly new-to-the-hobby. I feel most are just getting reholdered or shuttled between the TPGs. What percentage do you think are actually being graded for the first time?

New that they have been conserved? Or just new ?

I can’t reply to this survey accurately unless I know who the seller’s are.

“Freshly graded” is not the same as “new to the hobby”. Tons of ungraded vintage cards are bought and sold every day, and are definitely a vital part of the hobby. Most of my Old Judges and T206s are raw. Now, if you’re talking specifically about expensive, high-end cards such as those that are sold in REA or Heritage, then I’m sure the percentage of graded cards is higher than it is for 1968 Topps baseball commons, but I doubt it’s close to 100%. In any case, those are a small percentage of all the vintage cards that are bought and sold.

Freshly graded doesn't, I assume, automatically mean the first time it's been graded.

The title could have been better worded. But yes, those claiming to be "new to the hobby"

To me this meant the first time ever being graded. I was in the 0-20 camp...:eek:

I don't know about pre war; but you walk any major show and see millions of raw 50's-70's at anytime. I imagine some of those do become the freshly graded.
