Best Grade--missing paper

Posted By: Elliot
What's the best grade that you would give a card that is missing paper (even if it is on the reverse). On top of that the card clearly has been glued in an album at some time, and still shows residue.
If you would only grade a card with a wrinkle/crease, vg-ex at best, how can you grade this Ex?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1971633331&category=31 721
The color is about the same as the glue residue elsewhere, so I assume it is not paper loss.

Though obviously, this is not a card one would crack to send to SGC! I agree with SGC in what seems to be their opinion on all sorts of back damage: no better than VG.

Posted By: MW
It's difficult to say whether it's paper loss or paper residue from the scrapbook it was removed from. If it's paper loss, it's VG. If it's only excess paper stuck to the card with glue, I'd say Vg-Ex. Not to be too harsh, but the only way one could get an unqualified grade of Excellent out of this card is to not look at the reverse side.

Posted By: Lee Behrens
Acouple of weeks ago there was a T206 SL with paper obvious paper loss on the front that was graded EX.

My opinion is if the damage is on the back and minimal it could get a VG/EX.

Posted By: TBob
You send in an EX card and it grades "Good" because of a tiny written word on the back in an area of no printing and yet I see cards with paper damage on front and back getting "EX" grades????
I think it all goes back to WHO is submitting. My number one reason for disliking grading services...

Posted By: petecld
My 2 cents:

• Any card with ANY paper loss can't be "ex".

The best grade I have ever received for a card with back damage is a E98 Mathewson SGC 40. I would personally like a higher grade since the front looks so (gosh darn) nice but I can't argue the grade. It's fair.

The grade on the Hornsby was influenced by who the submitter was, not the condition of the card.

Posted By: Dan Mathewson
...there is very clearly some noticeable paper loss on the back, lower right.

I'm surprised that it received a 5. I agree, I that it must have been some other influence. Here's is where I'm not that knowledgeable about graders.

Are there ceratin "people" that get "special grading"? Or is this where it "pays" to be a PSA Authorized Dealer, and so forth...

This is an intereting topic to me.

Posted By: Dan Mathewson
I have heard this so much over the years, and I've heard it said about every company out there. It really anagered me to hear that the actual grade a card would get could be influenced in that manner.

Basically, that the grade inches up as the volume and $$$ from a partiular dealer or individual goes up.

Very frustrating.
