After hesitating many times over the last couple years, I finally acquired a graded Jim Brown Rookie to replace my set filler. Very pleased :)

Thanks guys. Nice to cross the Brown RC off the must have list. Happy collecting all!

I'm usually on the baseball side of things but this one has been on my want list for quite some time. Beyond excited to add this one to my collection. Best looking 2.5 I think I've ever seen. The mark by his face is on the slab so I'll send it out for a reholder.

revmoran 01-18-2017 12:04 PM

If that was a lesser value card it would never be a 2.5 - it's a beautiful card and if you were going to collect 12 football cards total that would be one of the twelve for sure - brilliant!

sockwell123 01-19-2017 08:34 PM

Nice Broadway Joe's!

I was hoping the Steelers would have played better last weekend, but here's a couple Steel Curtain era HOF's from the 1977 Topps Mexican set (up to 154/528):

I am drawing a blank as to why this is only a 2.5 grade. Have you gone over it with a loop? How is the back? Love the card.

There's light "spider" creasing from the left border through his hands and the football - it barely shows in the scan on the tips of his fingers through the football. The top/bottom centering is obviously off a little...and the registration is slightly off (notice the green ink on the right border). But I like it more than most 4's I come across.

Because Jim Brown scared the crap out of your scanner. In fact, from now on it should be a forum policy that Jim Brown cards are posted at that size in order to appreciate him as a powerhouse.

I've been out in California for the past 35+ days babysitting grandkids LOL! This AM I stopped by the USPO to pick up my mail. Here is one card that was waiting for me. 1968 Milton Bradley Joe Namath. You can see the "burlap" from the baseball cards at the top of the card.

This eBay purchase was not listed as a "Milton Bradley' card, it was listed as a Topps card. Including shipping this "collector grade" card cost me $23.48 I don't have a clue what the "book" price is. I was just happy to get it!

I don't know what they are called LOL! They are not mentioned in the Standard Catalog (I just checked). Included in the Milton Bradley "Win A Card" game were 1967 designed football cards, 1968 baseball cards, and 1968 Hot Rod cards (copied from a 1964 release).

#72 John Schweder RC SP listed in the Standard Catalog for $650 in NM and I paid $107 delivered or 16.5% "book".
#108 Hubert Johnston SP listed in the Standard Catalog for $750 in NM and I paid $83 delivered or 11% of "book".

Another card marked off 1952 Bowman Large #63 Charley Conerly SP, I need six more to complete my set! NM "book" price is $550 this one cost $81.44 shipped, but I purchased it during a recent 10% eBay bucks program. So I earned $7.88 eBay bucks, pushing my purchase price down to $73.56 or 13.3% book price.

Another great Hall of Famer SP, you are a collecting machine, Larry!

Progress made on the 1977 Topps Mexican Set this month in the much maligned category of CHECKLIST cards. Here's an uncut two card "strip" of Card #'s 204 & 256 (Bears) of the '77 Mexican set. I have not seen any cards from an uncut sheet in this set before, but can confirm those darn perforations ARE factory.

http://i345.photobucket.com/albums/p...psduwklasl.jpg

LuckyLarry 02-27-2017 04:12 PM

Thanks Ty! I don't know anything about that 1977 Topps Mexican set except what I am reading here in the Standard Catalog. Going by the "pricing" these must be pretty rare!

For me another hit 1952 Bowman Large #14 Paul Brown RC. FIVE more needed to complete my set. This was a "BattersBox" eBay pickup during the recent 10X eBay bucks promotion. Cost me $35.25 free shipping minus $3.52 eBay bucks total $31.73. The Standard Catalog NM "value" $250, so I am at 12.6% full book.

I just noticed the ink finger print on Paul Browns shirt. Thought it was kind of weird. Then I looked on eBay, and there are several others that have this finger-print, and some of the card do not?

Yes, there are versions with or without this print flaw. I'm not sure which one is more common, though.

Frito Lay John Hannah

I have just joined Net54, went right to the Football Forum, went through everything, lots of amazing stuff! But I don't know if there is anything more awesome or incredible than the John Hannah Frito Lay by DBesse27, complete with dip in his mouth and a can of Copenhagen on his helmet. I did a little search for this, but could not find one. I will keep looking. Happy Collecting!

Another 1952 Bowman Large arrived today. I need just four more cards for my set! Gino Marchetti NFL HOF 1972. Never played for the Redskins, but I guess the previous owner thought so (penciled in on the back). Cost after shipping and eBay bucks promotion $34.78 around 13.9% NM "book".

1948 Leaf #1 card Sid Luckman RC arrived today. The Standard Catalog NM "value" is $500, this low grade card cost me $31 delivered or 6.2% book
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...n/Scan_50.jpeghttp://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...an%201_33.jpeg

Friday morning when I checked my email, I had notices from eBay that some of the cards I watch had new listings. Three of the four cards I need for my 1952 Bowman Large set had been added! When I checked the listings, all were from Deans Cards. And if you didn't know, this seller takes a lot of heat for listing very over-priced cards.

Months ago, I abandoned my attempt to get these cards at 10% book or less, and moved my threshold to 20% book price or less. Two of the three cards met this criteria, and the third was close enough for me! I checked and double checked my math, believe me!

Normally I would have watched these three cards, and then pulled the trigger when I got an eBay bucks promotion. Not for these cards, I bought them then and there! I need just one more card to complete my 1952 Bowman Large set, #29 Hugh McElhenny RC ("books" NM $250)

First up #99 Joe Stydahar RC and SP. The Standard Catalog NM "value" is $950 and the Buy It Now price $165 or 17.3% book.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...utput_a4f.jpeg

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...utput_a51.jpeg

Next card #108 Hubert Johnson RC "value" $750 NM BIN price $200 or 26.6% book.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...utput_a4c.jpeg

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...utput_a4e.jpeg

Now #135 Gene Ronzani RC and SP "books" $900 NM and the BIN price was $150 or 16.6% book.

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...utput_a49.jpeg

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w...utput_a4b.jpeg

I purchased these cards Friday, and they attempted to deliver yesterday (Monday) but I was not home to sign for them. I picked them up just now from the US Post Office. Cards were shipped for free. Total spent (on these little pieces of worthless cardboard) $515 compared to NM "value" $2,600 is 19.8%.

Larry

LuckyLarry 05-05-2017 03:09 PM

I wanted to post a follow up to my last pick-ups, those three 1952 Bowman Large cards I bought from Deans Cards. Every set collectors "nightmare", when I went to put these cards away I discovered #108 was already in there! I must have forgotten to cross it off my list! And when I looked at completed posts here on Net54, I listed the same card as a pick-up on March 13th. Normally I would just live with my mistake, put the extra card in my doubles box, and swear I would never do that again! But I spent $200 on this card!

I've never bought very much from Deans cards, but according to their website they offer 100% Money Back Guarantee. I wasn't going to lie to them, so I called them and told the truth, that I made a mistake and I did not need the card. I was told no problem return the card and we will refund your money.

I mailed the card Wednesday (just two days ago), tracking shows arrival today Friday, and now at 5PM I have $200 in my PayPal account.

Why they list some of their card for ridiculous prices I do not know. But their customer service is outstanding.

Hello,

Picked up this large (15+ inches in length) original photograph of Wilbur Francis "Pete" Henry, inaugural member of the College Football Hall of Fame AND Pro Football Hall of Fame. The frame looks to be from 1920s. I removed the backing to see if it was signed by Henry on the reverse (it isn't).

This photo isn't really in my wheelhouse. I collect pre-1900 Ivy League Football photographs. Send me a PM if this piece fits into your collection. I'm always game for swapping.

Cheers

1948 Leaf Sammy Baugh

I don't normally buy cards in raw form due to the unknown but I took a chance on this Baugh. I already have a full run from his playing days but this Leaf was so odd I had to get it. I sent it off to SGC but wasn't too thrilled with the grade. I was happy that it was an authentic card but with the card in hand, it was in great shape with great centering and decent corners. Besides its off registration, there were no creases and the back was bold. So I'm not sure why it was a 20 but I'm happy for it to be encased by SGC.

Caught the bug for things other than baseball. No idea how I did but I liked these guys and these cards.

Looks like you did pretty well to me, but of course any show with Staubach is a good one to me. The '72s are nice as well.

Thanks Rob. It's been fun expanding into new fields of this hobby.

Not sure if I'll be able to finish this set, but I couldn't pass these up. 😊

In keeping with a recent tendency to favor oddball issues over more traditional rookie cards.

Good news at the mailbox today, as the last needed card for my 1952 Bowman Large football set arrived!
#29 Hugh McElhenny RC "books" for $250 in NM condition. This eBay listing was BIN $29.95 or best offer. So I offered $24 and the seller accepted. Then I bought nine other '52 Large cards to upgrade or restock my doubles box, and the seller shipped all my stuff for three bucks!
Pro and College HOF member, Hugh is related to the Mcllhenny family from Louisiana, the makers of Tabasco Sauce.

I DID IT!

Picked up these RCs of Pats greats from N54 member NewEnglandbaseballist:

More on the Nance card in the next couple of days.

In the meantime, I'm dying to add a beater copy of Buoniconti's 63 Fleer RC. Anybody got one?

Congratulations, that is a great accomplishment. I've just started this project and it seems like it's going to take me awhile, those sp's are going to be brutal for me I think. But that's what makes it fun, I've really enjoyed your posts of your pick ups and I think your posts may have been an inspiration to me to start on the set myself. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Mike

Haven't posted here in a while, but I've picked up a few things recently, so I figured I'd share. Very pleased to finally add these mid-grade Baughs to my collection:

Nice cards of Slingin Sammy.

Sweet Sammies!

Edit to add: where the hell did that red frown come from??

Vintageismygame 06-26-2017 10:35 AM

Just picked up a complete 1962 Topps set that the seller advertised as PSA 2 - PSA 4 condition. Cards came in this morning and man am I in love with this set! Not a bad pickup for $300.

Very excited to add these:

1967 Caprolan Nylon premiums. Gino had an endorsement deal with them and was one of the 10 players in the set. The premiums were distributed in a nylon sleeve with a glossy 8x10 b&w photo and a separate, larger sheet of paper with a bio of the player. The bio sheet is huge, so I cropped it a lot so that hopefully you can read the text. Astute observers will notice this is the same photo used on his rookie card.

So how rare is this? My go-to guy to purchase and learn about oddball issues is Mike Mosier at Columbia City Collectibles. He says that in the past 30 years he's only seen 2 Caprolan Gino photos and the other one was trimmed, ripped and water stained and came without the separate bio.

In case you're curious what the sleeve looked like, here is the photo from the listing:
