Picked up a couple of signed Goal Line Art Cards for my collection. Other than Namath, they are my main collecting focus for Football. These are Charley Trippi and Dante Lavelli.
|
Those are great cards, Mike. Congrats!
jeff |
Recent pick up now have 24 of the 36 cards in the set HOF rookie card Ken Strong. This one is hole punched AND date stamped FEB 2 1936. I wonder if there was some kind of candy store promotion going on?

actually, i'm wrong. it wasn't Tatum (though he used it too), it was Lester Hayes. Lester was covered in it.

Really excited about this pick-up. Big fan and collector of the Kellogg's issues, and like the '71 baseball, the the '71 football is a monster to get in nice shape. My LCS knows me well, and took these in and made them available to me. Thirty-nine different '71s, all NM with no cracking except for two, so thirty-seven additions to my NM set, putting me at 48/60. A little curl, but not bad, and they all fit together like a glove in that stack, so guess they have been together for quite some time. Anyway, made my day, thanks for the look.

This appears to be the "sister" card to the pick-up I had a couple weeks ago of #7 Ken Strong which I posted. I bid and won the Ken Strong card, I bid and lost this Bernie Masterson card. The new owner of this card paid $147 plus shipping plus tax and put it right back up on ebay. I won it the second time around for $150 plus shipping plus tax. High number and last card in the set.

Got these a little while ago. Grabbed a box at a local auction labelled "Rejects"
I'm perfectly happy to take these rejects. A bunch more late 70s and early 80s commons from the box to go through. I know there are a couple of Ray Guy cards in there which I'm pretty happy about too. https://www.net54baseball.com/pictur...ictureid=32260 |
Perfect cards in my eyes! Great pickups

Completed my 1960 Topps set with this one. Got a Beater Starr for $3, a Brown on eBay for $15 2 years ago. $8.74 for Johnny U makes 132/132, and the second highest price paid for any card. With the manageable set sizes and the fact most superstars are fairly cheap, vintage football is usually a fun and easy side project.
I really like the clean design of the fronts of the 1960 footballs, but this is not the best photograph of Unitas with the bug-eyed stare. |
Two of my all-time favorite QBs

This pick up leaves me needing just one more 1962 Topps football bucks for my set, I still need #36 Max McGee.

The last two local shows I've attended (Dec and Feb) included dealers with tough 1972 Topps football hi numbers weird because you rarely see them. I completed my set a few years ago, so I won't buy duplicates unless I get a great price. The lowest the dealers will go was around $10 each for commons (which is around full retail price). I mean if I was still building my set I would go for it, but not ten bucks each to fill my duplicates box lol! I did pull the trigger on this Steve Spurrier high number #338 "Pro Action" card for $27 in nice shape again probably full retail price, but it's a dealer I like to buy from when I can and I had the extra cash. I went back later to look again at the other Spurrier he had hi number RC #291, but it was missing from the showcase.

It's been a few years since I won a Probstein auction. This card brings me to 27 of the 36 cards needed for the set (75% complete). 1935 National Chicle #10 Cliff Battles HOF RC. (sorry for the awful scan) $122.50 not bad $4 shipping and then $8.86 tax ouch! In my mailbox $135.36.

That's awesome Larry. It looks like a really nice 1.

I don't buy many football cards (I currently own 5), and I don't buy many cards this new (I have exactly 2 cards printed after 2000), but I love watching this guy play. And I think this card looks awesome. He's unblockable on most plays, and he's either double-teamed or chipped most of the time. I don't think he gets as much credit as he deserves for how dominant he has been, and defensive lineman tend to not get massive hype in the card collecting world.
- 8 Years in NFL - 8 Pro Bowls - 7 times 1st team All Pro - He won Defensive ROY in 2014, and here's he finished in Def. I just picked up a big lot of mostly 1970's college football pins for resale. There's a problem with the ribbons though, they smell musty from being stored. Any suggestion(s) on how to get the odor out would be appreciated.

Pickups from a local show.
61 Taylor was $6 63 Tittle in EX+ was only $12 Snead and Nisby were $10 total, which I think is a good price for purple sky SP's. Getting close to finishing 61, 62, 63 and 67. Checklists are boring but nice to cross off. Tittle was a local guy, so he's always a preferred pickup for me. |
I've wanted a Montana rookie since I was a kid, and just never got around to picking one up. Finally found one I liked for a good price recently.

Yeah, it's a sharp card. The vertical centering is poor, but the card is really nice for a 6.5. The corners are good, and there are no wrinkles or surface issues. I was in the market for a while before I got this one, and you wouldn't believe how many have print anomalies on the front. This one presents better than many in higher grades that I saw. I think they just grade extra tough on "key" cards from high pop sets nowadays.

At the YouTube link above you can see Cliff Battles, Sammy Baugh and the Washington Redskins win the 1937 NFL Championship over the Chicago Bears in frozen Wrigley Field. The players said the frozen grass was like playing on razor blades. The period football music is a bit loud, but this highlight reel is awesome |
I'll check it out James! Meanwhile I did pick up a "Bronko" (1965 Topps CFL)

I picked up these two cards at the card show today football player/wrestler Wahoo McDaniel RC one of the keys to the 1967 set. Dealer price was $20 each I got them for $15 each.

Nice pickup. I’m closing in on finishing the 67 set, but I know nothing about wrestling. I didn’t know McDaniel was famous for other things and got sticker shock last week when I saw the prices on eBay for his card. Turns out he’s not a common like I thought :D

Today at the local card show for $30 I picked up seventeen 1961 Post football cards and another Wahoo McDaniel card!

I love the Redskins matchbooks that were produced between the late 30s and the 60s! I wish more teams had matchbook sets like these. jeff |

Someone has to be picking up football. These were like $3 a pop for my sets
Cotton Davidson had to have one of the most hard luck careers in Pro Football. Drafted into the NFL in 1954, then into the army in 1955. Returns in 1957 to seriously begin his pro career, but he was a Colt and that was the moment the Colts discovered this Johnny Unitas kid was looking like he would be great. Spends 1958 in Canada and 1959 coaching at Baylor before the AFL gives him his 3rd chance. He does pretty good in 1960 and 1961 (and makes the all star game in 1961 where he is the MVP of that game), but then the Texans discover this other guy Len Dawson, who leads the league in half the passing categories for 1962 and they don't need last years All-Star. Davidson gets dumped to the Raiders (for a draft pick which became Buck Buchanan, a great win for KC) for his 4th chance, where he is now 32. He makes the All-Star team again in his first year as a Raider, though he only gets 5 starts. Gets some playing time but misses a lot of time for the next 4 years and ends his career at 37. Not saying he was a great or anything, but Davidson was good enough to make all-star teams even after what should have been physical prime but something always seemed to happen outside of his control to halt his career. George Connor is always a good buy in my book, as he is basically priced as a common card in most sets but was a deserving hall of famer and one of the early large-but-quick linebackers. He's a steal. |
