Hi, welcome! Normally, this wouldn't be posted in BST (buy/sell/trade) but really cool! Do you think it's just general wear and tear on this 58? If it is a legit error/variation this is beyond awesome!

I have 6 of them and they are all identical, it’s taken me 2.5 years to obtain all 6

this is a factory print error
caused when debris damaged the BLACK LITHO PLATE during printing process
causing lack of image in an en even area , quality control was lacking in Topps
Baseball card Printing during the 1950's, poor printing registration , uneven borders , mis cuts , printers marks and occasionally wrong backs were all common, cool card but may not fetch much of a premium

There is a collector in one of the FB groups that swears up and down on this variation. I myself, don't see it being worth a huge premium, but what do I know.

what's the error? faded printing?

It's called Print Defect and PD according to PSA .. IMO

Worth less !

This is absolutely a variation or error. Print defect or not it is Reoccurring. Which is quite literally the criteria for a Variation/Error in baseball card collecting.

Look at the ‘58 Poncho Herrera. The exact same situation as here, except its on the front and obscures his name.

There’s some factors to what make a variation popular

1 who the player is

2 how rare it is

If it’s very noticeable and drastic or not

This variation is almost impossible to obtain and if out of all the 300,000 Mickey mantle collectors that only 20 of them want it it will always hold value because there isn’t enough to go around….rare enough to carry a premium with or without PSA recognizing

Look at 1967 bob bolin which is probably 20x more available than this card and it’s just a tiny print blob and that card sells for 100x the regular version

Personally I think variations such as this one are a complete joke. That said people will pay a premium for this. Not me. But people.

Also the OP is a great collector and an awesome addition to net54.

It is one of at least 6 other cards on the same sheet that have similar back defects. They are scarce but recurring. They are all pictured and discussed in the long variations thread in post war. Collecting all the affected cards is challenging but the cards have little hobby recognition except among passionate variant collectors at this time and do not sell for any premium. As someone said to
most collectors they are just defects in the card.

I am rooting for the OP to make them famous. If PSA can recognize a green smudge in the ball on the back of the 61 Fairly as a variation I guess anything is possible

the most expensive card on the planet has print defects that prove its real!!

the most expensive card on the planet has print defects that prove its real!!
see link
https://allvintagecards.com/how-to-s...-topps-mantle/

one that had all the correct print defects and the highest grade sold for a 12.5 million
it took 70 years to hit that number

my point is not all print defects are created equal !
but at least OP has the right player
