2001 Topps Vintage Inserts

Working on a master 2001 set - The packaging indicates the inclusion of original Topps cards, and the pack odds show categories for Vintage Stars and Mickey Mantle Vintage.

Neither TCDB nor Baseball Card Pedia seem to mention this.

Were vintage cards inserted? Did they do it like in 1991 and include one of every Topps card until that point?

If so, were the cards marked in any way or is there no way to tell whether a vintage card might have been pulled or not?

Thanks!

I am sure someone else would know more, but yes they inserted random vintage. As the previous inserts were for the 40th anniversary in 91, they inserted vintage for the 50th.

I don’t believe the giveaway was as expansive as in 91 or had every card. It was just a bunch of random cards from what I have seen and I do not believe they are stamped or identifiable.

Lifetime Topps Project did a box break and managed to pull a 91 Rob Ducey, so he made about a penny on his, lol.

Thanks.

I never pulled a vintage card back in '91 despite ripping what, cumulatively over the years now, is at least a case worth.

My luck - I would have pulled a checklist from 1990.

I did see this old thread on blowout where someone claims they pulled a redemption for a 54 Jackie, so I guess the better cards were not packaged. (It’s a bit of mix of discussion on 91 and 01)

1952-1956 are oversized and would not fit in 1991 packs. So every card from those sets were redemptions. Although I believe the big money cards from other sets were also redemptions.

The biggest "problem" with those 1991 vintage cards put into packs is,,,, there was no way to identify they were older cards. I had a friend pull a 1989 common in 1991 from a pack and if there had been some stamp *as Topps has done ever since* the cards would have had value in 1991 and still today

Instead if you pull a 1989 common from a 1991 pack it's worth the same 5 cents it was in 1989, 1991, 2001. 2012. 2024,...

Not sure I agree that's a 'problem' - all I see with a vintage card marked in some way as Topps has been doing for the last 15 years or so is a defaced card.

It may not be a huge deal with that 1989 common, but when I go on COMC looking for vintage singles from the 1970s and 1960s it never ceases to amaze me how many Topps has vandalized in the name of the 'chase'.

There are plenty of cards which have never and will never be given the stamp so I don't see that as a problem. My point, which I made to Topps in 1992 and still holds today is,,, without a way to ID the older card came from a current year pack, well your 1989 common *which one of my friends pulled in 1991* is worth 5 cents but with a stamp it would be a few dollars. And you got to have the value to do those inserts

This is true - pulled a redemption and never acted on it. Will have to dig, but will post a pic when I can. It was a 53 or 54 Johnny Schmitz

I have received a few PMs on this, and I’m still looking for it. It’s possible that I threw it out as a “dead” redemption without realizing the significance. Hope not and will respond to everyone when I check all the hiding places.

To clarify, mine was from 2001 -not 1991. I’m sure it was a 1953 Topps Johnny Schmitz. It had pictures of cards on the front, but not the one I was to exchange for. To the best of my memory, I pulled it from a RETAIL box of either 2001 Topps Archives or Archives Reserves that I bought at KMart in either late 2001 or early 2002. If I can find a scan (or the actual card) to confirm whether the product from which pulled was noted.

Hopefully, I’ll find it this weekend and be able to provide more definitive details.

Thanks for clarifying. Still looking forward to seeing it if it turns up.
