December Pickups

I guess I'll start :) It's been a good month (actually November) for woodcuts. My apologies as I still haven't figured out how to resize these images!
  • 11/04/65 – Frank Leslie's – Atlantic vs Eckford Clubs of Brooklyn (Creighton woodcut)
  • 07/03/86 -The Graphic News - Detroit Wolverines
  • 11/10/88 - Police Gazette - NY Champions

Bill Rayburn 12-01-2015 04:40 PM

Great pickups George. I have been chasing a Creighton for years, I seem to always be Mr Second Place.

My dad picked up this old scoreboard from a local high school. He convinced my mom to hang it in their living room lol.

Hi Ron

Hi Ron,
Very neat scoreboard!

Hey, George:

You might already know this but Henry Chadwick appears on your Leslie's piece as well as Creighton.

Topps206 12-01-2015 09:39 PM

I have a feeling this will be a busy thread in a few weeks from now.

Adam Comorosky game worn pants. I'm guessing they're from his time either with the Pirates based on the sporting goods company is the one formed by Wagner and Traynor.

Also pretty cool that the Pirates would have them make some part of their uniform instead of sticking with Spalding.

Full, unused ticket to the 1st game ever played at Anaheim Stadium

1 Attachment(s)
I recently picked up a full, unused ticket to the very 1st game ever played at Anaheim Stadium, the home of the Angels.
On April 9th, 1966 the hometown California Angels hosted the SF Giants in the first game of a two game exhibition series that preceded the regular 1966 season.

I've occasionally seen stubs to this game, but full tickets to this game are indeed scarce. A neat souvenir from the expansion era Angels move to their permanent residence in Orange County, CA. Love the graphics on the 1966 Angels full tickets. This was the 1st year that I attended games at the "Big A".

BTW, I collect tickets to all Angels home tickets from the 1966 season if you have any to sell or trade. :)

Hi Phil,
A few years back, I recall learning that Chadwick was depicted in this woodcut. Actually, I think you were the one who told me about it!

Bill, I'll keep an eye out for you. While that particular woodcut doesn't come up for sale often, it's not as scarce as other publications although does sell at a premium. I've seen a few come up for sale this year.

Thanks George I would appreciate it.

Great items so far! Below are two items I acquired antique shopping over the last couple of months. Both items are now my showcase items for two of my favorite collections, early equipment and early paper.

I am constantly amazed as to what is available at antique shops, flea markets and shows as well as how inexpensive some items can be. The first item pictured is a Spalding catcher's mask Model A No. 0. Thanks to fellow Net54 member Brett's research, the model was first offered by Spalding in 1887 and continued into 1907 (and possibly a little beyond). It is the amateur adult model (there is a professional adult model as well). The stamping is a little faded but very readable and all of the pads are intact. I got it for a little over 100.00 at an antique show and I was very happy to get it at that price.

The second item is a chapbook from either 1840 or 1868. It shows a woodcut of a form of baseball in the background on the front cover. REA sold one of these in a lot of other early baseball related chapbooks in 2006 and they dated it 1868 based on an inscription on the front cover. However, a dealer on ABE books listed it as circa 1840 and a search based on the advertisement on the back cover also lends credence to the 1840 publication date. I believe it is from 1840 but I will try to research it more. I could not believe it was in a large antique shop priced at 10.00.

Great items Alan, congrats. I may be able to help you date the mask a little closer. What does it say at the bottom of the outer ring in the Spalding label? You can send me a clearer picture of the Spalding label too if you would like.

Thanks Joe! I am travelling now but I will check it tonight when I get home and let you know. I really appreciate the help.

It took a while, but I found a replacement for the 1958 Spring program I traded away. I also picked up this cool little menu from a Welcome to SF Luncheon.

Congrats! That Welcome to SF luncheon menu is especially cool.

Antique Hockey Goalie Stick

Probably made in the 1910-20 range. No makers marks Visible. Black striping I think is probably from black tape that may have been on the stick at some point 100 years ago.

Joe, I actually cannot read what is at the bottom of the ring. Is this picture any better?

Looks like it might read AD 1876. I would put date at between 1905 to 1910.

Thanks Joe and Kevin! It is good to narrow down the date although I always hope for earlier. It is my nicest condition mask from the time period.

I also recently acquired this unusual trade card type item from Draper and Maynard. It is from 1920. I assume Mr. Smith is the store manager but I am not sure.

It has taken me a while to get this put together but it has been fun. I just received two tickets from Hunts last auction but I missed out on the 1916 Dodgers World Series pin in SCP. If anyone has anything that may fit in this please email me, thanks

Bob - Incredible stuff as usual. Question, what markings are on the small red enameled pin in the upper right corner? It looks just like this High School Champions pin that I have from 1914. Probably from the same maker.

Merry X-mas to my Joe Torre collection!!!

3 Attachment(s)
I know it is not super vintage, but I was so excited, I just had to post it.
Picked this up from another board member.
A 2006 game issued Joe Torre jersey. Signed in the number even.

Next to DiMaggio, Torre is one of my all time favorites. I have a great Torre card collection, and a game issued bat from his playing days, so this is going to look great next to those! I gotta get a nice frame for it!!!!

All of these will be available shortly.

Trio of very large Chesterfield cardboard ads. Bucky Harris, Casey Stengal/Leo Durocher, William Bendix from The Babe Ruth Story.

I picked up this 1912 Red Sox World Series program - it now completes the (attainable) Red Sox WS programs for me, along with 1915 and 1916. The 1903 program can run $100K+ when it pops up, so I've settled for a regular season program in its place, and 1918 is another $20K+ program, so this is the extent of the run for me for now!

rholmes 12-14-2015 11:08 AM

Actually a November pickup, but thought I'd post as not many Hal Chase photos come up and this is the only one I've seen from his brief time with the Stockton Millers. Photo from 1908...1911 stamp on reverse.

Not going to win any awards for condition...
