Lemon Peel Baseball

1 Attachment(s)
Has anyone ever seen this zig-zag pattern of stitches on a 19th century Lemon Peel Baseball before. The Ball seems 100% right but have never encountered this pattern. Attachment 194473

What size is it? Looks more like a 1950s "Clincher" Softball...google that and you will see what I mean.

It is 3 1/2" in diameter.

Guarantee that this is not 1950'd - definitely 19th century!

That is the size of a small softball, larger than a baseball. Looks like a softball to me, but I am no expert on 19th century balls. What makes you say it is definetly 19th century?

vintagesportscollector 06-15-2015 11:18 PM

Is it constructed like a lemon peel ball, or is it two pieces? I can't tell from the pictures.

Search "antique softball" in ebay. There are a bunch with what looks like a similar stitch pattern. I may be mistaken, but I think it's an early softball (could even be 19th century softball), but I don't think it falls in the realm of a "lemon-peel" baseball.

some kind of softball

at least all the ones I've seen with that stitching pattern are........

ball

that form of stitching is called concealed lace. Very common with indoor baseballs and softballs. Looks quite old

I think Joe is right...it looks like a really used Clincher softball:
