June 2023 Pickups

3 Attachment(s)
It's June 4th and no one has started a new pickups thread yet, so forgive me if I take up a little of the space that usually would've already been filled by members eager to show their newest finds.

Went to a show yesterday, and it was fantastic to get down and dirty at an endless supply of tables (99% of it shiny stuff!!). Based on the fervor of the "1967 Topps 6th Series" thread here in the post-war section, I ran across a guy selling individual semi-high numbers that were as close to 'pack fresh' as possible, so I jumped on them. They range from #459 to #518, and look suh-weet...

Then I grabbed an oft-mentioned candidate for Cooperstown, high number #550 Vada Pinson, from the same seller. When you see a relatively cheap 1967 Topps #609 Tommy John (who happens to be the last card in that historic set) centering be damned, buying him is always the right move. Then I found a trio of upgrades to my binder sets, 1962 #169 Bob Cerv 'green tint' (a really tough one to find in nice shape), a pretty decent 1971 #50 Willie McCovey, and the first card from my favorite set of all-time, 1972 #1 Pirates World Champions. And since you can never have too many 1961 high numbers, I picked up a pair of really nice ones, #527 Gene Leek and #535 Larry Jackson...

Now we hit the big time!!

Your eyes don't lie. I was on a negotiating rampage and ended up frickin' grabbing three/tre/trois/tres 1962 Topps #5 Sandy Koufaxeseseses (not sure how to pluralize his name, Koufaxi??) that were all recently graded (read "hammered") by PSA. Started my day with no slabbed versions, when I hit my pillow at night, had a trio. Weird. (If anyone is interested, they are available for trade). And ended the afternoon with another beautiful high number, 1961 Topps #579 Willie Mays.

What a great day all around...

BUT - did you look through all the 67 semis looking for mis-cuts???

But, of course! His sign said something to the effect of 'stunning looking singles,' so I knew before looking it was going to be a fruitless search. The hunt continues.

A recent member pickup for my 1948 Swell Sports Thrills' run.

Thanks, Tony Baldwin for a very smooth transaction. Great packaging and even follow-up to make sure I received the card.

Thanks! It was cool being at a show that had at least one dealer who was willing to sell things at normal prices. I want to have one of those Cold War-era red phone hotlines installed in his house, so I can always immediately contact him when I need a specific card. :D

Brent,

You're very welcome and I'm glad I could add a card needed for your PC. Great packaging and communication are always key to every successful transaction. It was a pleasure dealing with you Brent!

For some odd reason I really like the 1948 Sewell Sports Set

This is a huge white whale completed that I have been working decades on.
Everyone is familiar with the Fleer logo stickers issued 1969-1974. They did two for each team every year. Seems simple enough. But the truth is there are tons of variations. Some obvious logo changes, some color variances, and the final one I got today, a 1969 Mets round with a full dotted line. The 1969 is hard, but most have a partial solid line on the left side. This is the final variation I needed for a master set.

In all there are a total of 148 different ones. It's hard to even call this a "set" but trust me, this is a tough undertaking as most variations never show up for sale.

Congrats on closing that one out Mark, always a great feeling of satisfaction to get that last card needed.

Great work getting the master set with all those variations!

I thought of doing that but settled on the 2 patches for each team. I added the Senators and Pilots too. Got all 4 MLB Logo variations and that was it for me.

They make a nice display. Congrats again!

Mike

Nice get, Bradley. :)

A card that's been on my want list for a while now.

Congrats.

Thanks, Dale. I've always wanted an Aaron RC. Hopefully, I'll upgrade soon.

Dumb question, which maybe I can get answered by reading the blog - but figured someone here might be quicker: You say they were issued 1969-1974. Why do most ebay listings and checklists say 1968 - 72? Does this have to do maybe with copyrights? I notice on the Fleer Sticker Project blog they are listed actually 1969 - 77, not just '74.

Sorry I'm a pinpoint date freak for some reason with most of my collecting. I like the stickers, but am going to have to figure this out before I jump in all the way, LOL.

Any chance you'll give us a ballpark (pun intended) figure of what that score cost you??

Very nice cards, Sean! :)

I finally picked up this elusive Bob Schultz card that arrived just a couple days ago. (Not many available and most are spendy!)
I think this is the longest in between period I've ever had purchasing any 52 Topps cards?
2 to go in Wilhelm and Mathews.

Nice group of 52's Sean! I especially like the Minoso!

One more pick up. I received Sutter via trade and honestly I wasn’t pursuing him or even care really. I was just more or less looking to get rid of my end primarily. Any of you ever do the same?

Closing out June on a good note, with some mid-grade vintage beauties.
