The second to last one needed to complete my '56 set, next and last is Koufax.

Mathews

My 3rd attempt to find a Mathews I like, and this one is a slight upgrade to my latest as I like the color a bit more. Two more '57 biggies inbound this week.

1953 Bowman

Very nice Rob. So far I have not taken the plunge into this set, but really like the Mantle and Musial in the set. Congrats on this card

Congrats on the Mantle card, must be a bittersweet feeling to be nearing the completion. One of my indelible childhood memories is coming out of a mom-and-pop in the spring of 1953 with my eight-year-old buddy, and watching him open the first pack of Bowman cards that year. We were so blown away by the fantastic color photos, I knocked the cards into a patch of dandelions trying to grab them from his hands. They were by far the biggest items in the playgrounds that year - still can't figure how Bowman went broke from producing them.

My take is that the financial issues with the set were helped along by Joe Dimaggio, their spokesman for the set (he is on the 53 color wrapper and box). I have a theory that Joe D. was getting a cut of sales above a certain point, which was also a contributing factor as to why they went to the B&W cards. Joe's deal probably stated he got a cut of the color cards only-why would you not use him to sell the B&W cards too?

Dave, thanks for the input. I have also read the speculation about DiMaggio's deal with Bowman. So you suppose that his contract specifically stated "color cards," allowing Bowman to veer off into the B&W with no legal repurcussions? Man, I seriously doubt any kids in 1953 were even aware that his image was on the wrapper, much less purchased the cards because of it. It must have been directed entirely at the wholesale and retail marketers, who were more likely to be impressed by the endorsement of the Yankee great. Which seems kind of silly, right? Why squander hundreds of thousands on Joe's endorsement just to move product to the vendors? I don't know what kind of hit Bowman had to take on unsold product returned from vendors, but the cards were such a hit with kids, it's hard to believe there was much left unsold. The sheer size of DiMag's contract may have dictated an outlandish sales projection just to return a normal profit for Bowman.

I liked the look of this card so I bought it.

Musial

Nice card Patrick. I started collecting, via packs, in 1957, and can still remember the small corner grocery store I bought the pack where I first got this card. I grew up in St Louis and there, of course, had been no Musial in 1957. Man, that was a moment...no pun intended

Thanks Drew! The card looks much more appealing than the technical grade indicates.

1951 Bowman Cloyd Boyer with Billy Goodman back overprint. What happened here is easy enough to figure out: the front was printed and the sheet was put into the press wrong side up and inverted for the back printing, so it got printed twice on the front and not at all on the back. Now, whether that was on purpose because the front was misaligned and they decided to use the sheet to clear the press I don't know. Still fun to have for my printing freaks collection.

Agreed, you can barely see the crease..It looks a lot better than mine, and you didn't pay much more....Nice pickup.

jthorst75 09-16-2012 04:19 PM

Thanks guys! I was surprised that there were no bids at all. The crease is a bummer but overall doesn't ruin the appearance and its Maris' rookie.

Here is a collection I am working on. 1965-1969 have been my pickups this month. I also have a 71 that should be in this week.

Rob - That is one nice 51 Bowman Fox card. Looks far better than vg/ex - closer to ex/mt. does it have back damage?

Thanks. The 2 beasts of the collection will be the 59 rookie and the 62 short print. I know many collectors don't like the fact that his rookie card has a pink background, but I like the fact that one of the nastiest pitchers in history of baseball has a pink rookie card and is smiling from ear to ear in the photo.

Grew up in St Louis and went to series in 64, 67 and 68. Pink may have lulled some folks to sleep, and Bob did not get off to a dynamic start, but the 59 set was the first one I finished and that is one of my favorite cards

Back is as clean as it gets! I have definitely seen worse looking cards grade higher, but the technical grade isn't very important to me.
