Vernon Tigers? Tom Hughes?

I picked up this photo maybe 25 yrs ago thinking it was Salida Tom Hughes from name on reverse. But he never played for Vernon Tigers.
Anybody have an idea who it really is? year? Maybe used for a Zeenut card?

Buzz,
The player in the photo looks to be Ernie Shore, but I'm not 100% certain.

Not a bad guess. That would be 1921 when he was 30 yrs old at end of career. The guy in the photo doesn't look particularly young.

Buzz,
From SABRE's Bio on Ernie Shore:
Shore’s regular season, though, was even worse than 1919’s. He finished at just 2-2, with one save. The Yankees dispatched him with pitcher Bob McGraw, catcher Truck Hannah, and first baseman Ham Hyatt to the minor-league Vernon Tigers for shortstop Johnny Mitchell in January 1921. (The Vernon club played outside Los Angeles in the Pacific Coast League.)

Bingo! They did not include winter league stats in ML records.
Thanks, really appreciate it.

Long Tom

The Boston Globe article incorrectly refers to Long Tom Hughes who did pitch in 1903 but it was Salida Tom that the NYY sent to Vernon in 1921

I'm still wondering if this photo is misidentified as Salida Tom Hughes.
Here are a few pictures of Salida Tom and also two of Ernie Shore.
I would ask you to look at the ears of both players. Ernie Shore's ears look more like the player in Buzz's photo, FWIW.
Check it out...

I don't know. Yankees played at Polo Grounds in 1919 and 1920 when Shore was with them. I think the Hughes background is Hilltop Park maybe 1910 when Thompson did many of his NYAL photos

BTW, I have what looks like a 1930's-40's print of the Hughes photo included above with the reverse credit to Larry Hoffman. Also have 2 similar for Danny Hoffman. Maybe they were related.

Tom Hughes

Those New York photos of Hughes were taken during Spring training in Atlanta.
