Topps releases preview of new Topps T206 set on Twitter

For those that love vintage sets remade with modern players, start saving your cash. This would be a fun one to buy a case of.

That makes me happy! Is there any other information out on this yet? I'll be hunting for minis! The modern size Topps-206 annoy me, but the minis and even the framed versions are sweet!

If it's an online only (as rumored in the thread), buy it fast because it won't have much of a print run.

Looks like a set of 50 cards (maybe?), released in 5 waves of 10. There will be back variations. I'll probably buy the first wave and see how I like them.

I thought these were awesome as a kid in 2002 when Topps first did it, but now I really wish they'd make the images look remotely T206 like. The smoothing photoshop filter they use does not even slightly resemble the T206 art style.

swarmee 05-11-2020 08:12 PM

That's true; they'd look better as pointillist dotted images like the original lithographs.

On sale now. Price is steep and not much chance of autographs. I'm not nearly as interested.

So, ten card packs for $15 each? I guess it could be worse.

Farm_kid 05-14-2020 11:37 AM

I popped for the 20 packs. I am an original T206 and Topps 206 junkee.

I never fell for the A&G or Gypsy Queen products though.

2002, 2009, and eTopps T206. The 2010 Topps 206 fell short for me.

I've been following the comments on Blowout Forums and people are wrapped up on the 50 subjects checklist and the back variations. I hope Topps surprises everyone with the "Pose" variations. They already do this with their Base Topps set, so why wouldn't they do it here? I suspect there will be more than 50 cards of the 50 subjects.

swarmee 05-14-2020 12:15 PM

Well, there will be 250 total cards it seems, 50 per wave. So yes, Trout could come back with another pose. Not a fan of the Ty Cobb back being used, since most people don't really count it as a T206 and it should only go with Ty Cobb. I know they're a little more flexible than that when making these sets.

I bought 3 packs for the hell of it.

The packaging and the back variations were super smart. As someone who dabbles in T206 and mainly goes for vintage I haven’t been this interested in something new in a while. Wonder if the packaging is going to cycle through the different companies with each wave? That’d be enough to justify a pack or two each time!

Farm_kid 05-15-2020 01:55 PM

It would surprise me if they changed the boxes between series that much, but I agree that would be very cool and would keep people coming back for more.

May get a few pack and keep 'em unopened. Can't help but think is will help out the original T206's in popularity and price.

Here is a picture from my 2009 Topps 206 Set in a binder. I expect to do the same with the base cards from this new 2020 version as well.

I also included the scan of my Honus Wagner. I keep this as a placeholder in my 1909 T206 set!

Now that is a beautiful set! Nicely done and best of luck with the new issue.

t206 top loader in binder

I like to binder approach for the raw cards too. I use a 9 pocket page and find that the t206 top loaders fit in there great. so i get the protection of the top loader and the display satisfaction and accessibility of the binder.

Good idea. I'm looking forward to getting the packs I ordered from topps.
